What is the UltraMARAthon? The UltraMARAthon is a supported 50km single- day footrace through the conservancies of the northern Maasai Mara ecosystem. The race can be run as an individual or as a “relay style” team of 2 or 4, with legs of about 25km or 12.5km each. There will be 6 checkpoints evenly spaced along the race route. A race route map will be provided in the pre-race briefing email. Date and Time: 4th of December, 2021, at 06:30. Location: The event this year will traverse the Lemek, Ol Choro and Enonkishu Conservancies . Entry Fees: Individual 50km $300 (KES 33,000/-) Relay team (2 x 25km) $400 (KES 44,000/-) Relay team (4 x 12.5km) $400 (KES 44,000/-) The Cause The greater Maasai Mara is one of Kenya’s key ecosystems and provides an essential barrier between agricultural areas and the Maasai Mara reserve itself. The stewards in the greater Mara area rely primarily on tourism to manage and protect the ecosystem, which given the seasonal nature of tourism in the area and the current pandemic presents certain challenges. The goal of the UltraMARAthon is to raise funds to support key initiatives in the region related to conservation and enhancing the lives of the communities within the area. The initiatives that will be supported this year are: Mara Elephant Project - funding for the recruitment, training and deployment of rangers specifically to address poaching, human/wildlife conflict and habitat loss challenges in the region. Africa Mission Services Birth Center – funding to expand a women’s health center located in Engos, which serves a population of approximately 7,000 local Maasai, providing prenatal/postnatal care, family planning education and services, and assists 50 – 60 women in childbirth each month. Ranger support – funding for uniforms, equipment and general administration for the conservancies involved in the event. In addition, this event will encourage tourism to the Mara conservancies and provide beneficial exposure on both national and international levels, raising awareness of the challenges of conserving and managing this iconic yet threatened ecosystem during these difficult times.

ultraMARAthon Further information Signage The race route will be marked so participants can easily identify the route. The route will be marked in full during the two days before the event, and checked on race day prior to the front runner/start. Safety and Medical Safety is our highest priority during this event. All participants will be briefed on potential hazards. Rangers will notify and temporarily halt participants in the event of a wildlife hazard. All participants must adhere to rangers’ instructions and stop running until given a signal it is safe to continue. A basic first aid kit will be available at each checkpoint. Medical assistance, including an ambulance and air support, will be strategically positioned along the course. Wildlife rangers will line the course to ensure the safety of runners. Numerous safety vehicles and a spotter aircraft will also be along the route. Covid-19 Protocols Due to the ongoing pandemic the event will have strict protocols in place to ensure the health and safety of event participants, volunteers and spectators alike. These protocols will be detailed in the race briefing on 1st December. A prerequisite for participation will be for each athlete to present either a negative PCR test (taken within 72 hours of race day) or their full vaccination certificate prior to the day of the event. Checkpoints Each checkpoint will consist of a water station, portable toilet, and first aid kit. Relay handover checkpoints will also have a shaded area for participants to wait before or after a handover. Local tourism partners will manage these stations to ensure smooth and safe running. There will be a dedicated team to ensure no materials or waste are left after the event. Liability Each participant must sign an event disclaimer, accepting to participate in the event on the basis that the event organisers, partners, and land owners undertake no responsibility for health or safety during the event and that such responsibility is the participants’ alone. By participating in the event, the participant acknowledges that they suffer no medical condition which would prevent them from participating. All participants agree to abide by the organisers’ and rangers’ instructions. Waste Disposal Each checkpoint will have a disposal bin for the eco-friendly water cups and any other waste products. related organizations MMWCA The Maasai Mara Wildlife Conservancies Association (MMWCA) was formed in 2013, to serve as a membership organisation for current and future wildlife conservancies in the greater Maasai Mara. MMWCA has a mandate from landowners and tourism parties to play an overarching coordination role for all stakeholders in the greater Mara ecosystem. By conserving the greater Mara ecosystem through this network of community protected areas, we aim to ensure a secure future for our biodiversity and wildlife and the recreation and tourism that depend on it, as well as prosperity for the regional Maasai population and the nation of Kenya for generations to come. FOR RANGERS For Rangers raises money for the welfare of wildlife rangers, who risk their lives every day protecting Africa’s wildlife and wild habitats. Since 2015, For Rangers has been supported by individuals from Kenya, Tanzania, UK, and as far away as New Zealand. So far, the “Running For Rangers" team has taken part in some of the worlds toughest ultra marathons: The Marathon des Sables, The Jungle Ultra in Peru, The Desert Ultra in Namibia, Fire & Ice in Iceland, a 500 km run across the frozen wastelands of the Yukon in the infamous 6633 Ultra, numerous marathons, half marathons and ‘Tough Mudders'. In the past five years the team has raised over $3,000,000 - every cent of which goes to the needs of the rangers on the frontlines of protecting wildlife in Africa. ultraMARAthon
