Hello, Delegates! It is my greatest pleasure to welcome you all to the 2019 University of Georgia’s Model United Nations Conference! My name is Megan Gillahan and I am thrilled to serve as your Crisis Director for the Battle of Hogwarts committee. Ideally many of you would have read the Harry Potter books before choosing to join this committee. However, if you have not, I highly encourage you to carefully read the character descriptions provided in the guide. I would like to formally introduce myself. My name is Megan Gillahan and I currently serve as the Secretary-General of UGA’s Model United Nations team. I study International Affairs and French here. When I’m not studying, you can find me working in a tiny coffee shop in the Georgia Conference Center on campus or curled up somewhere with coffee and a good book. It is with great pleasure that I introduce your chair and co-chair, Alexa Hernandez and Ivan-Ruiz Hernandez. Alexa is a first-year biology major hoping to study neuroscience. However, she has become increasingly more interested in international affairs since joining Model UN. She has a black belt in Tae-Kwon-Do and has previous experience in both Model UN and Mock Trial. Ivan is an International Affairs major with a horticulture minor. He hopes to go to law school after graduation to study international law. He is also a member of the Guide Dog Foundation on campus and participates in club rugby. As the conference draws nearer, I hope you will remember to reference the background guide as often as necessary to understand the relevant background information as well as the starting point for the committee. As a self-proclaimed massive Harry Potter nerd, I would love for all of you to read (or re-read) the series in preparation for the committee, however, I know this is asking a lot. Therefore, please reference as many external sources as you need to understand the context of the committee. While everything leading up to the starting point is canon, it is important that you let go of all intensely-held beliefs about the series’ ending and allow yourselves to be creative when determining the fate of Hogwarts and the wizarding world! If you have any questions about committee, please do not hesitate to email me at megan.gillahan@gmail.com Best of luck! Megan Gillahan Crisis Director, Battle of Hogwarts 2
The Basic Rules and Procedures for the Committee This committee is a crisis committee and therefore, will not operate under the traditional rules and procedures followed within General Assemblies. Even if you have experience with crisis committees, it is important that you read over the following sections to understand how this committee operates relative to others. Since you have been given this information, it is expected that you come prepared to participate as dictated. 1. In a crisis committee, there are no speaker’s lists or topics, meaning that there is no agenda to be set. 2. Per UGAMUNC Rules and Procedures, costumes will not be permitted in this committee. 3. Every delegate has been assigned a character role. Your job during the conference is to represent your character’s interests to the best of your ability. Additional research is crucial to helping you stay in character during the conference. Many of the characters in this committee have ample information available in the books or online. 4. Debate is conducted through continuous moderated caucuses, each with a specified purpose, length and speaking time. The chair will occasionally allow for unmoderated caucuses, the time of which will be determined by the delegates. 5. This committee is intended to differ from the ending of the book series. Everything starting from chapter twenty-nine of Deathly Hallows and on will be completely up to the members of this committee. 6. Certain pieces of information from the books will not be followed so as not to make your quests too easy. For example, the lost diadem will NOT be in the Room of Requirement on a bust. You all will need to help Harry find it without that information. 7. Some characters do not have clear objectives because of their prior experience both with Harry and Hogwarts. These characters are slightly open-ended so delegates may craft an arc as they deem fit. 8. Delegates will create directives which are concise specific solutions/responses to crises or the simulation. Directives are plans of action that the committee will take to target a specific problem. 9. Delegates will write crisis notes. These are written to the crisis staff and do not require committee approval to pass. Traditionally the notes are a background endeavor undertaken by delegates to forward their own agendas. They can be used to obtain money, make connections and gain information on those around you or the crisis as a whole. 10. Stay within the parameters of the committee: as with a historical committee, certain technologies are not available for “use” within the committee. For example, electronics do not work in Hogwarts because of the magic in the air. Therefore, your character is unable to send text messages to people or use the internet. 11. Note that this committee is designed to be fast-paced like a war committee. In fact, your characters ARE fighting in a war. The overall time-span of the committee will be about as long as the duration of the battle in the books (an overnight battle). Therefore, time in the committee will be slower than the time we pass in committee. 3
A Note on the Structure of This Committee As a crisis committee, Battle of Hogwarts will operate in a fast-paced manner designed to test your creativity and flexibility when presented with complex situations. Delegates are strongly encouraged to work together to write crisis notes to crisis staff to obtain personal resources for your character. Establishing a strong presence in committee as well as remaining diligent and creative through crisis allows a delegate to stand out. Position papers are required for this committee. It is important that each delegate create a plan of action wherein they think proactively about certain actions the committee should take to defeat Voldemort and help Harry. This will not be formally used in committee but will help each delegate prepare for the committee. It helps to consider what your character wants and who they can interact with within the committee to reach this goal. Position papers are due to the Crisis Director’s email (see letter to delegates) by Friday February 1, 2019 to be reviewed prior to the conference. Please note that position papers are required to be considered for an award. Delegates should remember that this committee operates with a previously established background. However, everything after the starting point of this committee will be entirely new for all involved. Do not remain rigid in your viewpoints about the end of the series and instead use creativity to completely alter the ending. It is important that you familiarize yourself not only with all the information presented within this background guide but also that you do ample research on the series. This committee will operate under the “laws” established in this universe. No electricity can be utilized through crisis notes or directives, since electricity does not operate within Hogwarts. Students may draw inspiration from potions, charms, plants, and other magical devices mentioned within the Harry Potter universe to take action within the committee. The more specific you are, the better! As a final note, remember to be civil with your fellow delegates. While Model United Nations can often become intense, many of the delegates in this committee will feel a personal attachment to the events that occur throughout the weekend. Harry Potter has played a large role in many people’s lives and it is easy to become deeply involved in the conversation. I urge you all to show each other the same respect you show your crisis director and chairs. 4
Starting Scenario: May 2, 1998 It is in the early hours of May 2, 1998. Lord Voldemort has learned that Harry Potter has managed to enter Hogwarts despite his various efforts to bar him. A Caterwauling charm placed in Hogsmeade alerted the Death Eaters to his arrival but thanks to the efforts of Aberforth Dumbledore; Harry, Ron, and Hermione were safely quartered in the Hog’s Head. Through a portrait of Arianna Dumbledore, the trio manage to enter Hogwarts without Headmaster Snape’s knowledge. However, he will soon become aware of this development. Harry, Ron, and Hermione are led by Neville Longbottom through a passage into the Room of Requirement where the remnants of Dumbledore’s Army (D.A.) have been hiding out throughout the school year. Neville explains that Hogwarts isn’t quite Hogwarts anymore. The Carrows have taken over Defense Against the Dark Arts and Muggle Studies lessons and their punishments have become increasingly harsher. The members, including many of you in this committee, proceed to demand how best to help Harry. Realizing that many of you are loyal to him, Harry proceeds to divulge the following information to your group: Harry has several goals to reach before the end of the battle. In order to defeat Lord Voldemort, he must find a long-lost heirloom of Rowena Ravenclaw. Upon further consultation, Luna and Cho are able to ascertain that it is most likely Ravenclaw’s lost Diadem he seeks. He also has one horcrux that he needs to destroy but has no method of destruction since he has lost possession of the sword of Gryffindor. He warns you all the Voldemort will likely keep his snake, Nagini, close as she is very important in his defeat. He urges you all not to come into contact with the dangerous snake, but you know that it if the opportunity arises, you may need to take that chance for the greater good. Finally, after he finds Ravenclaw’s diadem, destroys it as well as Hufflepuff’s cup, and kills Nagini, Harry must corner and finally kill Voldemort. Your committee is charged with aiding Harry in the completion of these goals to the best of your ability as well as keeping the Death Eaters from destroying Hogwarts. Therefore, crisis updates will likely center around Harry’s progress (or lack thereof) in completing his goals as well as the status of the raging battle on the grounds. Voldemort may employ the use of not only Death Eaters but other dangerous creatures from the forbidden forest where he is hiding out. You will need to get creative in your efforts to stop or delay his progress. As such, your goals are twofold and it is important that as a committee you find a balance between the two.1 1 Behind Text image from: https://pixels.com/featured/hogwarts-black-and-white-rebecca-jenkins.html 5
Background of Committee The Rise of Voldemort: Perhaps the greatest dark wizard, Lord Voldemort was born Tom Riddle Jr. in 1926 to a muggle father and witch mother. 2 Born to an ancient wizarding family, he is the last known descendant of Salazar Slytherin. During his time at Hogwarts, he quickly stood out as one of the brightest wizards to pass through its halls, though he gathered a following of a strange sort. 3 This group would later make up the beginnings of his followers, the Death Eaters. His title “Lord Voldemort” began during his school years. 4 Throughout his time at Hogwarts, Riddle became obsessed with his magical heritage, determined to leave his muggle father’s legacy behind. Tom Riddle always saw himself as apart from others and strove to make that his public image. For years, including while at the muggle orphanage, Riddle abused his powers to rise above others and often terrorize them. In 1943, Riddle succeeded in discovering his family’s lineage and opened the Chamber of Secrets. Many muggle students were injured and one was killed by the monster within. Rubeus Hagrid was falsely accused by Riddle of being the person responsible for the killings and thus, expelled in his third year. In his remaining years at Hogwarts, Riddle fortified his relationships with his gang of Slytherins and mystified teachers with his charm, notably Horace Slughorn who had a sort of favorites club. It was through Slughorn that Riddle learned of Horcruxes, a banned subject at Hogwarts. Horcruxes allow a witch or wizard to store a piece of their soul in an object, allowing them a shallow sort of immortality. However, to hide a piece, they must split their soul which requires the act of murder. Riddle, as Lord Voldemort, would go on to make six intentional Horcruxes before his downfall in 1981, and a seventh in young Harry. Lord Voldemort commenced the first wizarding war in 1970 after traveling extensively and studying the dark arts. By recruiting many witches and wizards, he managed to gather a large following of Death Eaters as well as outcast creatures such as giants and werewolves. These creatures were pushed to the outskirts of society out of fear and he capitalized on this. At the height of his power, a prophecy was given by Sybill Trelawney to Albus Dumbledore in the Hog’s Head concerning the downfall of Lord Voldemort. Overheard by Severus Snape, Voldemort soon learned of the prophecy and quickly acted on it. The prophecy in its entirety was: 2 “First Wizarding War.” Harry Potter Wiki, harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/First_Wizarding_War. 3 Kimsey, Jeanne. “Death Eaters – The Harry Potter Lexicon.” The Harry Potter Lexicon, www.hp-lexicon.org/thing/death-eaters/. 4 image obtained from http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Tom_Riddle 6
“The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches... Born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies... And the Dark Lord will mark him as equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not... And either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives... The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies…” – Sybill Trelawney5 However, Voldemort only ever heard the first part of the prophecy because Snape was discovered.6 Therefore, he did not realize that by attacking Harry, he marked him as his equal and determined that one day they would have to fight to the death. Voldemort’s greatest weakness was his determination to avoid death at any cost without understanding the repercussions of his actions. After hearing the prophecy, Voldemort determined that it was Harry Potter whom he must dispatch. Setting out on Halloween, 1981 Voldemort killed Lily and James Potter and attempted to kill baby Harry as well. However, because of the love Lily had for her son and her attempts to save him, Voldemort could not kill him. His power was vanquished and Voldemort was reduced to a ghost of himself, only alive because of his Horcruxes. Young Harry was left with a lightning scar to mark him for the rest of his life. For ten years, Voldemort was believed to be gone for good. The Boy Who Lived: Harry James Potter was born on July 31, 1980 to Lily and James Potter at the height of Voldemort’s power during the first wizarding war. In fact, the end of the First War would be brought about by Voldemort’s demise at Harry’s hands just one year later. After his parent’s deaths, Harry was placed into the care of his aunt and uncle on his mother’s side, Vernon and Petunia Dursley. They had just recently had their first and only child, Dudley Dursley, when Harry was left on their doorstep on the night his parents were killed. For ten years, Harry would live miserably with the Dursley’s until Rubeus Hagrid arrives to take him to Hogwarts. At Hogwarts, Harry feels at home with his best friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. At the end of his first year, Harry will once again face Lord Voldemort who had taken up residence in Professor Quirrel’s body to gain mobility once more. Voldemort attempted to gain possession of the sorcerer’s stone to obtain his own body again. He ultimately failed and was once again little more than a ghost as Harry moved into his second year. 5 “The Lost Prophecy .” Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, by J. In Harry’s second year at Hogwarts, the Horcruxes Voldemort created become important. When Voldemort opened the Chamber of Secrets, he poured his soul into a muggle diary. This became one of his Horcruxes and decades later would make its way back into Hogwarts by way of Ginny Weasley. Ginny unknowingly became possessed by this piece of Voldemort’s soul and opened the chamber again at his request. Several more students were injured but no one was killed. In another encounter with Voldemort, Harry once again defeated him. He destroyed Riddle’s diary and unknowingly destroyed the first horcrux. Voldemort would rise again at the end of Harry’s fourth year during the third and final task of the Triwizard tournament. Voldemort’s loyal death eater, Bartemius Crouch Jr., pretended to be Professor Alastor Moody for the duration of the school year to ensure that Harry Potter would be placed once and for all in front of Voldemort on the night he would be returned to his body. Harry once again manages to escape the Dark Lord but this event ushers in the second wizarding war. The Second Wizarding War: Following the events in the graveyard, Albus Dumbledore reconvenes the Order of the Phoenix to counter Voldemort’s rise in influence. In an effort to keep Voldemort out of the Ministry of Magic, Dumbledore hoped to gain support from ministry officials. However, out of fear, the Minister of Magic, Cornelius Fudge, refused to believe in the return of Voldemort and took to publicly slandering the characters of both Dumbledore and Harry. Harry, Ron, and Hermione, knowing that Voldemort had returned, refused to accept the Ministry-approved Defense Against the Dark Arts coursework issued by Dolores Umbridge in their fifth year. Instead, they created an illegal club within Hogwarts to practice defending themselves against Voldemort and his Death Eaters. They called themselves Dumbledore’s Army (D.A.) and met several times throughout the year to practice without the knowledge of Umbridge and her inquisitorial squad. 7 Throughout Harry’s fifth year at Hogwarts, the link between Harry and Voldemort was more pronounced and Harry was able to see into Voldemort’s mind. This was eventually abused by Voldemort who showed Harry a false image of his Godfather, Sirius Black, being tortured. Harry and members of the D.A. stormed the ministry in an attempt to rescue Sirius only to learn that it was a trap for Harry. The first battle of the second wizarding war thus ensued in the Department of Mysteries in the 7Image obtained from: http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Battle_of_the_Department_of_Mysteries 8
Ministry of Magic. The battle ended with Dumbledore and Voldemort confronting each other. Before Voldemort could escape, Fudge was able to see for himself that he had returned. 8 Entering Harry’s sixth year, the wizarding world was now aware that Voldemort had returned. The Ministry of Magic was issuing pamphlets on how to counter the dark arts and actions to avoid in order to survive Voldemort’s second rise to power. People began to disappear and the dark mark was again being found above residences where Death Eaters had killed. It was then that Harry learned of Voldemort’s Horcruxes. Dumbledore had been searching through memories to find objects Tom Riddle may have felt an attachment to in order to ascertain the location of the six Horcruxes. Harry began taking private lessons with Dumbledore, learning all he could about Voldemort’s past in order to understand his mortal enemy. At the end of his sixth year, Harry and Dumbledore succeeded in finding a horcrux hidden in a cave not far from Riddle’s muggle orphanage. Dumbledore is wounded in the encounter and weak as he and Harry return to Hogwarts. There, Draco Malfoy had succeeded in leading several death eaters into Hogwarts where they cornered Dumbledore. At the top of the astronomy tower, another battle ensues resulting in the death of Dumbledore and the irreversible maiming of Bill Weasley by Fenrir Greyback. Harry, Ron, and Hermione decide that they will not be returning to Hogwarts for their seventh and final year but will instead embark on a journey to find and destroy the Horcruxes. The Ministry of Magic is controlled by Pius Thicknesse, a death eater. Hogwarts is under the control of Severus Snape, a known death eater, as well as Amycus and Alecto Carrow. Harry had already succeeded in destroying the diary in his second year, but the locket that he and Dumbledore found in the cave turned out to be a replica. The true horcrux was nowhere to be found. The trio eventually track down the locket as well as Hufflepuff’s cup. They know that Nagini is likely one of the remaining three Horcruxes. At the start of this committee, Harry is still searching for something of Ravenclaw’s of immense value that is likely another of the six known Horcruxes. Therefore, he needs to find Ravenclaw’s heirloom and Nagini as well as a method of destroying the remaining Horcruxes. As an aside, please note that Harry does not realize that he is the seventh and final horcrux at this moment and this will become key information throughout the committee. Below you will find a list of all characters who should be present in the committee. As such, they are people you may work with or against but not people you can write to through crisis. 8Image obtained from: http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Battle_of_the_Department_of_Mysteries 9
Character Descriptions: Hermione Granger - the brightest witch of her age and best friends with Harry Potter, she is a key player in the Battle of Hogwarts. Up until this point, she has been traveling with Harry through the English countryside tracking down Horcruxes to help him defeat Voldemort. She is incredibly resourceful and her muggle-born background should not be forgotten as it has often come in handy in the wizarding world. Her detailed study of Ancient Runes, Arithmancy, and Charms may come in handy. Her main goal is to ensure Harry’s survival and the downfall of Voldemort. Ron Weasley - Serving as Harry’s best friend for the better part of 7 years, Ron knows Harry better than anyone. While they may have had a spat recently, Ron is back in the game and ready to ensure Harry’s survival. He has a strong family background and many members of his family are present within this committee. The Weasleys have been part of both wizarding wars and are deeply involved in Voldemort’s removal from power. While Ron may not be the most skilled wizard, his relationships with many people in this committee may come in handy and is intense loyalty gives him an edge. Neville Longbottom - The most forgetful boy in Hogwarts but who shall not be underestimated. While never very close to the “golden trio,” Neville has been around for all their shenanigans and shared a common room with the three for seven years. Neville has had a long struggle through the academics of Hogwarts, flourishing only in Herbology. However, the recent occupation of Hogwarts by the death eaters Alecto and Amycus Carrow has given him a newfound courage which he has used to protect those younger than himself. Neville will stop at nothing to defeat Voldemort (and Bellatrix if he gets the chance for revenge) Minerva McGonagall - Often described as a very strict and severe witch, McGonagall has taught Transfiguration at Hogwarts for many years. As head of Gryffindor House, she has watched many students come and go and had close relationships with many of the fallen Order during the first wizarding war. She feels a strong dedication not only to her house but to Hogwarts as an educational institution and will do everything in her power to stop the death eaters from destroying her home. Fred Weasley - One of two Weasley twins, Fred is known for his wicked sense of humor, his ability to perform magnificent pranks, and his inventions. His creativity along with his sarcasm are driving forces in everything he does. An experienced quidditch player alongside Harry and other members of Hogwarts, Fred may just have a few tricks up his sleeve when it comes to defending his family and his friends against whatever is thrown his way. George Weasley - The latter born twin of the Weasley family, George performed many tricks alongside his brother Fred in order to yield many laughs from his friends. Coming from a poor yet loving family, George learned to work well with what he was given and to find happiness in the little things. Being born on April Fool’s Day, George has a bit of a mischievous twinge, yet can and will be serious in times of need. No one will break him and his family apart. 10
Lee Jordan - Primarily known as the vivacious commentator of Quidditch matches, Lee also has the same streak of sneakiness as the Weasley twins. Lee is best friends with the twins and often participates in their “endeavors.” He is both brave and loyal to his friends, and will stop at nothing to defend what he believes in. While not much is known about his academic achievements, he is sure to stick next to the twins and do all he can to bring down Voldemort. Molly Weasley - As the matriarch of the Weasley family, she easily assumes responsibility, yet is quick to catch those (especially her children) who slip on their own tasks. Playing a large part in Harry’s life, she has been a motherly figure towards him and works to include him in their family gatherings. Because of her strong will and ability to take matters into her own hands, Molly will not let anything (or anyone) come between those she cares about. She treats Harry as though he were one of her own and will fight to the death to protect him. Ginny Weasley - The youngest and only female of the Weasley siblings, Ginny has both an innocent air and an army of brothers at her disposal. Despite coming under the influence of Tom Riddle in her first year, Ginny grew into a confident, young woman who has a heart of gold. She is incredibly skilled in quidditch and a known expert at the Bat-Bogey Hex. While Ginny still has much to learn, she is an accomplished witch with intense loyalty to her family and to Harry. Lavender Brown - One of Harry’s fellow Gryffindor classmates, Lavender is oftentimes most recognized for her bubbly personality that can give off a childish impression. However, Lavender possesses a great deal of courage and intuition as one of the initial members of the D.A. Throughout her time at Hogwarts, Lavender developed close ties with Parvati Patil and Professor Trelawney. Moreover, she was - for a brief moment - involved in a relationship with Ron Weasley. Parvati Patil - Harry’s date to the Yule Ball in his fourth year, Parvati is a fellow Gryffindor who has shared many classes with Harry, Ron, and Hermione. She has a keen interest in Divination and has enjoyed courses with both Trelawney and Firenze. Professor Trelawney seems to believe that she has an active inner eye and may one day become an accomplished seer. She will likely stick close to her friend Lavender Brown as well as Professor Trelawney during the battle. Luna Lovegood - Quirky and a loner, you can never quite tell what Luna is thinking. A Ravenclaw in Ginny Weasley’s year, Luna is fairly outspoken about her extremely-unusual beliefs and oftentimes seems fairly out-of-touch with what is going on around her. Her time at Hogwarts consisted of her being teased and alienated from her peers. However, after she met Harry, it become clear that she was capable and intelligent. Her strange knowledge has proven useful on numerous occasions. She joined the D.A. and was the only non-Gryffindor to aid Harry in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries. Luna has demonstrated that she is fiercely loyal and quite capable of maintaining her composure. Moreover, her knowledge of Ravenclaw could prove instrumental in locating further Horcruxes. Nymphadora Tonks - An Auror with an aura of “hip,” Tonks is typically seen with pink hair (and the occasional pig nose), due to her ability to shapeshift into anything she wishes as a Metamorphmagus. Having been trained extensively, Tonks is an experienced witch in defensive 11
and offensive magic. While she is a notoriously clumsy person, she is brave, selfless, and possesses an incredible will. Loyal to Dumbledore, her friends, and her family (Remus Lupin), she repeatedly puts her life on the line for the sake of any plans that better the world. Remus Lupin - An original creator of the Marauder’s Map, Remus has taught at Hogwarts as a Professor of Defense Against the Dark Arts where he developed relationships with many of his students as a mentor. His ability to captivate his class and see strengths in everyone, he was quickly a favorite professor. While he has wolfish tendencies every full moon, Lupin is a good- natured and caring man that has learned to work around his unfortunate disposition. Unusually perceptive and quite courageous, Remus knows when and how to act when the time is right. Kingsley Shacklebolt - A high-ranking auror in the Ministry of Magic and a member of the Order of the Phoenix, Kingsley is very level-headed and capable in his magical abilities. While he works extensively in the Ministry, he continuously strives to change the stigma against half- blood wizards and muggles. He worked undercover within the ministry for a time, feeding them back information so that Sirius Black, an innocent convicted felon, would remain free. Because of his inclusive and strong nature, Kingsley’s internal compass is able to show him the best way in saving his team. Immensely powerful with years of experience, he is an amazing ally to have in the second wizarding war. Pomona Sprout - Both the Head of Hufflepuff House and the Herbology professor at Hogwarts, Sprout likes to get her hands dirty, both literally and metaphorically. Typically seen with a smile on her face, Pomona is very caring and nurturing to her students, specifically those like Neville Longbottom who take a liking to herbology. Loyal and positive like a true Hufflepuff, she will use her herbal knowledge however she sees fit. She has experience dealing with many dangerous plants (commonly kept in Greenhouse 3) and docile plants. This knowledge, as well as her arsenal in the greenhouses, will come in handy throughout this fight. Filius Flitwick - As Charms Master and Head of Ravenclaw, Filius Flitwick is involved extensively in Hogwarts festivities and planning. Although he is short in stature due to his goblin ancestry, he is not short in heart nor skill. Those who do not know him, usually underestimate him. He appears to not have a mean bone in his body but how he will react to his home being besieged by a dark wizard is unknown. Colin Creevey - Known for his picture taking and need to document everything, Colin seems to be in both the wrong place at the wrong time. As a muggle-born wizard, Colin worked hard to be brave and immediately latched onto Harry during his first year at Hogwarts. As an easily excitable human, he holds Harry in high regard and will do anything to help him anyway he can. Incredibly eager to learn and to please, Colin may prove highly useful in this battle. Dennis Creevey - Like his older brother Colin, Dennis also seems to be highly-excitable and demonstrates an obsessive amount of loyalty to Harry. Moreover, Dennis is the smallest - and in turn least threatening - Gryffindor in his year and is often looked over. However, Dennis seems to know no fear as his involvement with the D.A. demonstrates that he is willing to go to great lengths to help his friends in need just like his brother. This dynamic duo may be unstoppable when the battle begins. 12
Seamus Finnigan - A half-blood Gryffindor in the same year as Harry, Seamus’ loyalty to Harry has certainly been tested. Although Seamus’ presence in the D.A. may suggest total allegiance to Harry, past tensions have shown that Seamus is not always in total agreement with the way Harry handles situations. However, Seamus’ loyalty to his best friend, Dean Thomas, has normally steered him in the right direction to support Harry’s mission. A particular proclivity for pyrotechnics helps him stand out in most school lessons. Dean Thomas - A half-blood Gryffindor in the same year as Harry, Dean grew up in a muggle household. During his time at Hogwarts, he was often seen with his best friend Seamus Finnigan. After the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, Dean expressed his support for Harry - amid outspoken criticism from Seamus - and joined the D.A. Once the Ministry began rounding up muggle-born wizards, Dean was forced to go on the run and was eventually captured by Snatchers. However, he was rescued by Harry and returned with him to fight in the Battle of Hogwarts. As a Muggle-born, Dean has personal stakes in the outcome of this battle. Cho Chang - A Ravenclaw who was a year older than Harry, Cho was a person of interest for Harry during some of his later years at Hogwarts. Although a relationship never truly blossomed, Harry often imagined situations where he could impress her. However, shortly after Cho and her friend Marietta Edgecombe joined the D.A., Marietta exposed Harry to Professor Umbridge. Cho was adamant about justifying Marietta’s actions to Harry; however, she was met with a cold and disinterested reaction from Harry. Known to be a rather gifted Quidditch player, her skills with a broom may come in handy. Draco Malfoy - Draco is as unpredictable as he is pretentious. Coming from a wealthy and overprotective pure-blood family, Draco always expressed a feeling of superiority over his classmates. Draco’s personality, coupled with the fact that his parents are well-known Death Eaters, led to an iconic rivalry with Harry. However, in his later years at Hogwarts, Draco was tasked killing Dumbledore - a mission that eventually proved too great for him. Since then his family has fallen out of the good graces of Voldemort and Draco has displayed a noticeable sense of indifference towards Voldemort’s mission. Draco’s closest allies are Crabbe and Goyle; however, even within this “friendship” Draco sees himself as the obvious leader. Pansy Parkinson - Pansy is the quintessential Slytherin school mean-girl. Throughout her time at Hogwarts, she was often found teasing and making life difficult for other people. She also showed an immense amount of support for Draco and served as a confidant for Draco during their time together as they bonded over their shared hatred for Harry. Pansy will likely follow Draco’s lead as her allegiance is somewhat uncertain at this time. Michael Corner - A Ravenclaw student who dated Ginny Weasley for a brief period of time, Michael was one of Harry’s various supporters at Hogwarts. While Harry was at Hogwarts, Michael joined the D.A to thwart Umbridge. During Harry’s absence, Michael was an adamant protester of the presence of Death Eaters Amycus and Alecto Carrow as professors at Hogwarts. His personal stakes in the outcome of this battle are unknown but he has shown that he stands firmly with Harry’s cause. 13
Peeves - Peeves is a poltergeist that actively roams the halls of Hogwarts playing mean-spirited but normally harmless pranks on students and staff. Throughout Hogwarts history, many characters - most notably Argus Filch - have expressed an intense desire to rid the school of Peeves; however, Peeves seems unexplainably resourceful in his ability to evade eviction. Although most of Peeves’ sense of humor consists of practical jokes, he has been known to become overly-excited over other destructive actions such as the opening of the Chamber of Secrets and the execution of Sirius Black. In turn, this leaves many unanswered questions regarding the morality of Peeves. Slughorn - Both former Head of Slytherin and Potions Master, Horace Slughorn’s past is muddy and mixed. He has a good nature, yet seems to surround himself with high achievers in all aspects of life. These students often were invited to the “Slug Club.” This led him to be well connected in the wizarding world, yet his discrimination hindered him as well. Slughorn is both ambitious and blinded by his ambition. However, he strives to make up for his past mistakes. Madame Pomfrey - As the head nurse of Hogwarts, Poppy Pomfrey is skilled in healing magic due to the many disasters that seem to occur within Hogwarts. While she is very kind to her patients and treats them with ease, she is very strict and expects full control over her patients. Her knowledge of Hogwarts and of healing magic will prove useful in what is to come. She is incredibly loyal to all those who call Hogwarts home and will be a vicious adversary to those who would do them harm. Kreacher - A typically grumpy and hostile house-elf who has a knack for stealing things, Kreacher was left to Harry after the death of his godfather, Sirius Black. Kreacher is fiercely loyal to both Harry and the Black family, and will stop at nothing to make sure they and their legacy is saved. Kreacher will have followed Harry to Hogwarts in order to help defeat Voldemort who so cruelly left him with the inferi of the cave many years previously. Firenze - A centaur who previously called the Forbidden Forest home, Firenze serves as one of the Divination teachers at Hogwarts. While Firenze is not as proud and traditional as the rest of his herd, he is just as courageous. His knowledge of the stars and what they have to tell us is without parallel. He feels a need to protect humans and innocents, particularly human children, even when his herd would abandon them. Therefore, he will serve as a much needed guardian in the hours to come. 14
