CONTENTS Cover Feature: The Direct Pipe Method: A New World Record Set Combining the advantages of microtunnelling and Horizontal Directional Drilling, the Direct Pipe Method is ideal for crossing under levees, canals and other environmentally sensitive areas. The technology simultaneously tunnels and pushes the pipe into place, creating a single pass process launched from one side of the crossing. Recently, Laney Directional Drilling of Spring TX successfully completed its 11th Direct Pipe project, and set a new World Record for length with an installation of nearly 5,000 feet. This record setting shore approach into the Gulf of Mexico was completed safely, on schedule and within budget. A total of 9 confined space entries were employed during construction. 18 Features: 16 22 Trenchless Technology & Pipe Conference 2017 Trenchless Technology in Two Cities (TTP 2017) Report Amarillo & Tulsa are examples of a growing trend for municipalities Following a successful first conference at University of Texas Arlington to acquire equipment, train staff, and set up in-house trenchless in 2016, the South Central Chapter of NASTT (NASTT-SC) and CUIRE co- technology programs. At the general session, Dr. Mo Najafi, CUIRE Director; Mr. Larry Johnson, NASTT-SC Past Chair; Mr. Alan Goodman, NASTT-SC Chair; Dr. Ali Abolmaali, Chair of Civil Engineering and Dr. Peter Crouch, Dean of Engineering welcomed attendees. The keynote presenter was Mr. Travis Andrews, with City of Fort Worth Water Department, who spoke on upcoming City of Fort Worth capital improvement projects for water and sewer. The highlight of this general session was the presentation of four $2,000 student scholarships by NASTT-SC. These scholarships were funded from the proceedings of TTP 2016, held on Tuesday, August 23, 2016, at UT Arlington. The scholarships were presented by Ms. Molly Gallagher, NASTT Membership Coordinator, Mr. Larry Johnson and Mr. Alan Goodman. The technical program included two tracks of New Pipeline Installations and Renewal/Rehabilitations/Replacements of old pipelines. 16 TEXAS & OKLAHOMA TRENCHLESS REPORT 2018 – NASTT SOUTH CENTRAL CHAPTER

The Direct Pipe® Method: A New World Record Set When Failure is Not an Option - We Have the Direct Pipe® Solution By: Dr. Maureen Carlin, PhD., Laney Directional Drilling Co. T he Direct Pipe® method combines the advantages of microtunnelling and HDD technology creating a single pass process that uses a steerable tunnel boring machine-cutting head. The technology tunnels and pushes the pipe into place at the same time, filling the void as it progresses. Overall, the process greatly lowers annular pressure acting on the surrounding subsurface formation and greatly reduces the risk of inadvertent returns. This makes the method ideal for crossing under levees and environmentally sensitive areas where failure is not an option. With the Direct Pipe® method, the entire jobsite infrastructure, including the prefabricated pipeline, is located on one side of the crossing. This set-up results in using less labor and equipment, causes less Laney Project Management Team: (l to r) Nick Michels, Brian Carpenter, Tige Egan, Jason Smith, disruption to the environment, and can be Shai Joshi, Jeff Harper, Rob Hotz, Kent Lawler, Kerby Primm 18 TEXAS & OKLAHOMA TRENCHLESS REPORT 2018 – NASTT SOUTH CENTRAL CHAPTER

At all stages of the Direct Pipe® engineering design process and throughout construction, the construction team worked with the engineering team to develop the design with the highest likelihood of success to execute the construction effectively, efficiently and safely. Regarding construction, Drilling Fluids Engineer/Coordinator Tommy LeBlanc Sr., considers, “what differentiates Laney’s Direct Pipe operational successes is a highly skilled and experienced construction team consisting of a strong superintendent and his core crew that have a profound understanding of the overall process. From the engineering aspect to the actual field installation and rig-up of the thruster anchoring system is probably the biggest difference maker.
