Through ‘S-Banking’, UNAIR Students Successfully Process Garbage for School Progress UNAIR NEWS – Five Universitas Airlangga students in a Community Service Student Creativity Program (PKMM) team succeeded in implementing the 3R ( Reuse , Reduce and Recycle ) system to elementary school students SDN Sidotopo IV / 51 Surabaya, so they focus on character education by increasing awareness of the environment (waste management) and interest in reading. The five students are Dede Wulanita Sari (team leader), Lia Dwi Lestari, Nyayu Erika Sofiah Junaidi, Sharah Nuzila Ramadhani, and Fatmah Sapta Dewi, all students were from Faculty of Public Health (FKM) UNAIR. The method applied for the community serice is called “S-Banking”, inspired by one of the programs developed by Tri Rismaharini, Surabaya Mayor, Merdeka dari Sampah (MDS) in 2018. According to Dede Wulanita Sari, with the program, the students SDN Sidotopo IV / 51 Surabaya are able to choose and sort between organic and inorganic waste. Once sorted, the waste is processed according to its type. For organic waste (dried leaves, fruit peel, food waste) is processed into compost. “The fertilizer is then sold or used alone. The income from fertilizer sales can be used to develop of the library, “said Dede Wulanita.
Previously, SDN IV / 51 Sidotopo located at Jl. Bolodewo 46 Village Sidotopo, Semampir subdistrict, Surabaya in running the vision of character education had some obstacles, such as low awareness of students to put away the garbage and the lack of trash cans. The organic and inorganic waste was also put into one container and it was burnt in an open space and posed a health risk. The limited library facilities make students’ reading interest low. This is due to the lack of book collection which is limited to BOSDA book aids. With creativity, Dede and friends have built MENGKUDU library. “SDN IV / 51 Sidotopo hoped that there is a program that can solve the problems and help the learning process that embodies character education, so we do this PKMM program,” added Dede Wulanita. EDUCATION in waste sorting by UNAIR students at SDN Sidotopo IV / 51 Surabaya. The S-Banking program succeeded in advancing the school. (Photo: PKMM Unair) Mengkudu Library The success of Dede and friends was then reported in the paper “Dahwah Sehat” under the guidance of UNAIR lecturer, Dr. dr. Atik Choirul Hidajah, M.Kes. The proposal passed the selection and obtained research grant from Kemenristekdikti for PKM 2018. Now in this SDN, the inorganic waste from used bottles, cardboard, cans, glass bottles etc, collected by students and will be brought to S-Banking every week to be weighed and sold. The money from the selling is not directly given in the form of money, but in savings that can be taken every semester for school purposes. From this waste management, the school gets three advantages, the environment becomes clean and comfortable, students are taught to save money, and they have more interest in reading so eventually MENGKUDU library was built.
MENGKUDU Library is a library system to improve reading interest by inviting students to play an active role in adding book collection and using the preferred method of learning through fun teaching education. “The school response was very supportive with our program, even planning to incorporate into the learning curriculum in the next semester,” said Dede Wulanita Sari. In the future, S-Banking program is expected to support MDS program, increasing students’ awareness to preserve the environment, and increase student’s motivation to build Mengkudu library. “We hope that this S-Banking program can be an alternative role model for other elementary schools to improve character education,” added Dede. (*) Editor: Bambang Bes What Former Head of BEM Say on Campus as Radicalism Nest UNAIR NEWS – The emerging issue of radicalism in the campus has invited many
comments. This is due to the arrest of suspected terrorists in several campuses in Indonesia. However, it cannot be used as a reason that campus is the hotbed of radicalism. Head of Student Executive Board (BEM) period 2017/2018 Anang Fajrul Ukhwaluddin responded to the issue. According to him, the campus as a radicalism nest is a baseless claim. However, that statement or issue was not accompanied by attachment or evidence of the source of data and when the National Agency for Combating Terrorism (BNPT) conducted the research on radicalism on campus. “The statement that said that campus as a radicalism nest is just a mere issue,” he said. Anang also said that what made the campus labeled as a radicalism nest was some arrests on students in campuses who were following jihadist sermon group. For example, in some of the largest campuses in East Java, students were arrested for following jihadist sermon group in 2015. “This kind of group is exclusive and implemented around the student’s residence,” he added. Furthermore, Anang revealed that Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI) which is considered radical by the government has a division for students. Anang said it was named Gema Pembebasan. It may also be the reason why campuses are branded as a radicalism nest. Regarding who is responsible for the emergence this issue, Anang said that it is a personal responsibility because the campus institutionally has never directed its activities towards radicalism. “But, the campus also remains obliged to provide comfort for all academicians not to be affected by the issue,” added UNAIR Political Science student. Anang also said how to make campus not seen as a radicalism nest. According to him, the campus must carry out a discussion of nationalism or deradicalization. In addition, students should always excel and follow the course as they should be. “Making achievements and keep studying citizenship and Pancasila is keeping the campus’s good reputation from radicalism,” he concluded. East Java Gubernatorial Election, UNAIR Not Involved in Practical Politics UNAIR NEWS – “Again we affirm that UNAIR has never been involved in practical politics”. That’s the assertion made by Suko Widodo, M.Si., as Head of Information and Public Relations Center (PIH), Universitas Airlangga, related to the circulation of photo of UNAIR Rector supporting for one candidate in Gubernatorial Election (Pilgub) of East Java on 27 June. Suko said that UNAIR Rector never made any related statement about East Java Gubernatorial Election, especially giving support to one of the candidates. “Many times, the Rector also asserted that UNAIR maintains its purity as the institution of education which is always neutral related to leadership election,” added Suko. Rector’s statement which says “Do not let UNAIR alumni fight by themselves. We must support each other for mutual progress. For the advancement of UNAIR alma mater and for the triumph of Satria Airlangga “is the usual rector statement delivered during a meeting with alumni. “During meetings with alumni, the rector always conveyed that message. It is a universal message to motivate all UNAIR alumni to be able to realize his ideals. So, it has nothing to do with supporting practical politics, “said Suko. Furthermore, Suko reiterated that as a part of public and academic community should be intelligent not to trust irresponsible news.
“As a State University, again, we are neutral and not involved in practical politics,” he concluded. Youth Follow Examples of Character in Old Story UNAIR NEWS – Researching the toughness of character in the old story so it can be followed by the young generation, made a team of Student Creativity Program of Humanities Social Research (PKM-PSH) Universitas Airlangga headed by Mohamad Afif Ma’ruf, receive Kemenristekdikti research grant in PKM 2018 . The toughness of the character was written in “Exploration of Ki Honggolono’s Toughness in the History of Mirah Village and Golan Village Feud in Ponorogo Regency” . In addition to M Afif, the PKM-PSH team also consists of Rerica Dhea Shavila and Aisyah Nusa Ramadhana. All the three students are from State Administration Science Program, FISIP UNAIR. According to Moh Afif, Indonesia is known as nation with 1001 stories, whether they are legends, folklores, stories of the past, which are inherited through generations. The stories are still alive in the society. If the story is a prohibition, taboo, or guidance, people still believe in it and they do not dare to violate. The story was of the feud between two villages, Mirah Village and Golan Village, Sukorejo Sub-district, Ponorogo Regency, East Java, it deserves a recommendation to emulate the younger generation. From the toughness of Ki Honggolono, the character in the story, there are positive values to follow, high commitment, self-control, and high spirit in facing challenges.
“Our team recommend the values to be encouraged to the general public and the younger generation in order to adopt Ki Honggolono’s toughness values in in everyday life. In order for young people to remain tough and never give up in facing challenges, “said Moh Afif. The recommendation was given through a seminar held by Moh Afif and friends, May 20, 2018 in Ponorogo. The seminar was attended by representatives of village officials and Youth Association. It was aimed to provide insights about Ki Honggolono’s toughness values. Rahmat, representatives of Youth Association Desa Mirah, is optimistic that this insight will be able to make the villagers change, be open minded, and work together to realize the welfare of the community. Five Followed Creeds How is the toughness story of Golan Village and Mirah Village feud still believed until now? It was started with the past conflict between two powerful figures in two villages; Ki Ageng Mirah and Ki Ageng Honggolono. Geographically, these two villages are located in one area, only separated by the river. But the people of both villages never and did not dare to make social contacts or collaborate in activities together in one location. It is believed that the people “must fight” just to preserve the traditions of their ancestral heritage. They dare not violate the creeds.
The gate to the grave of Ki Ageng Honggolono in Golan Village, Kec. Sukorejo, Kab. Ponorogo. (Photo: PKMPSH Doc) Who are Ki Honggolono and Ki Ageng Mirah? In the past, in Golan Village lived Ki Ageng Honggolono, a famous, powerful, and brave character. People respected him and therefore, the government appointed him to be the Palang(village head). He has a cousin named Ki Honggojoyo, living in the village of Mirah and known as Ki Ageng Mirah. Long story short, Ki Honggolono has a handsome son named Joko Lancur and Ki Ageng Mirah has a beautiful daughter named Dewi Amirah. The children fell in love to each other. For the sake of the happiness of his son, Ki Honggolono is willing to propose Dewi Amirah for Joko Lancur. Ki Honggolono made the trip to Ki Ageng Mirah’s place. Because they had different beliefs, Ki Ageng Mirah did not accept the proposal, so the requirements for proposal was made difficult to be met by Joko Lancur. The first requirement, Ki Ageng Mirah asked in just one night to make Golan River dam to irrigate the rice fields. Second, he asked for rice and soybeans each one barn. This requirement should not be delivered, but the barns must walk by themselves to Mirah Village. With his supernatural powers, Ki Honggolono can meet all Ki Ageng Mirah’s requests. He asked his students to collect rice and soybeans. However, the barn could not be full as it was always stolen by the spirit sent by Ki Ageng Mirah. Ki Honggolono was annoyed. The barn then filled with damen (rice straw) and titen (soybean skin). The damen and the titen was changed into rice and soybeans. For the river dam, Ki Honggolono asked for Bajul Kawor (crocodile king) help who then ordered thousands of crocodiles to stack on each other to disrupt of Golan river water flowing to the village of Mirah. After all the requirements were ready, Joko Lancur with Ki Honggolono and Golan residents to Mirah Village. But Ki Ageng Mirah in front of the students and his guests alleged that the offerings were fake, the rice and soybeans is mixed with straw and soy skin. Hearing that, Ki Honggolono was furious. A war broke up between these two powerful figures, which are also followed by their disciples. In that chaotic situation, Joko Lancur and Dewi Amirah were frustrated and decided to commit suicide. During the war, there was a sudden flood drowning Ki Ageng Mirah and many of his residents. Knowing his son was dead, Ki Honggolono was very disappointed. After burying his son, he gathered the remaining two villagers. It was at this point that Ki Honggolono conveyed his creeds. First, “Wong-wong Golan lan wong Mirah turun-tumurun ora oleh ngenekake mantu”. (Golan and Mirah people and their offspring cannot be matched in a marriage). Secondly, ”Barang utowo isen-isene ndonyo saka Desa Golan kang awujud kayu, watu, banyu lan sapanunggalane, ora bisa digawa menyang Desa
Mirah”(Everything from Golan Village can not be brought to Mirah Village). Third, “Barang-barange wong Golan lan desa Mirah ora bisa diwor dadi siji”. (Golan and Mirah village stuffs cannot be united). Fourth, “Wong Golan ora oleh gawe iyup-iyup soko kawul” (The Golan people can not make the roof from dried straw). The fifth, “Wong Mirah ora oleh nandur, nyimpen, lan gawe panganan saka dele” (Mirah People are prohibited from planting, storing and making food from soybeans). Ki Ageng Honggolono also added: ”Sing sapa wonge nglanggar aturan iki bakal ciloko” (Anyone who violates this rule will get misfortune). Having said that, he returned to Golan Village with a deep regret. “These creeds are really maintained by people in these two villages,” said Moh Afif, Head of PKM-PSH. And according to his team’s analysis, Ki Honggolono’s commitment to propose Dewi Amirah for his son, Joko Lancur should be an example. Despite difficult requirements and though at first he also did not agree with the matchmaking plan. Ki Honggolono is a role model of his disciples and village heads who were respected by his people. After the conflict he presented himself to the two villages’ residents. When facing challenges and difficult conditions, Ki Honggolono makes a sacrifice sacrifice to please his son. new potential of cultural and economic tourism. Reog art is synonymous with men, but with the intention of empowering women, in Sawoo Village, Sawoo Subdistrict, Ponorogo Regency a female reog arts group called “Sardulo Nareswari” was established. It attracted the attention of PKM Team (Student Creativity Program for Humanities Social Research (PKMP-SH) Universitas Airlangga. The team are Fajri Kurniararasanty, Gita Ayu Cahyaningrum, Isnaini Nur Amalina, students of History Department, Faculty of Humanities UNAIR. They wanted to reveal more about Ponorogo reog arts from the other side, women potential. The PKMP-SH team, headed by Fajri Kurniararasanty, wrote “Paguyuban Sardulo Nareswari: Women in Reog Ponorogo Arts, Dance Among Domination and Diversity.” This manuscript has successfully passed the funding selection in Kemenristekdikti PKM Program in 2018. Speaking of reog arts, people will remember Ponorogo. Fajri and friends believes that Ponorogo is a city that has uniqueness in its performing arts. Moreover, reog became one of the internationally recognized cultural heritage and became an icon of the city called ” Reog Land”. “Writing about Reog Ponorogo, there are apparent interests various parties for the sake of the arts itself. And reog is in the complexity of conflict among the people of Ponorogo, “added Fajri. As we all know, reog performances are presented in the form of dances, a dramatic dance without dialogue. The movements are expected to present the message and theme of the dance. However, it is usually performed by male except jathilan dance by women. In history, jathilan dance was originally performed by men dressed as women. This is a representation of gemblak, a teenage nurtured the Warok as kelangenan (his favorite), as an effort to maintain his supernatural powers. But because the gemblak figure was not in accordance with religious norms, Ponorogo regency in 1985 made a policy and change jathilan to be performed by female dancers. The shift of jathil dancers maintained until now. In this regard, Fajri and friends were challenged to know further from the perspective of women. In addition, cultural challenges in society also still position women below men. “We want to examine women’s lives in the world of arts, because arts and women are an ambivalence that raises two different views in society. One side of women is considered as a victim of exploitation, on the other women in traditional arts are considered to break men’s domination, “said Fajri.
Members of the women’s reog community “Sardulo Nareswari”. (Photo: Doc PKMP- SH) Economic & Tourism Potential Women’s reog community “Sardulo Sareswari” was established with the intention to empower women in Sawoo Village. According to Heni Astuti, the founder of this community, it was established to make a new breakthrough in Reog Ponorogo arts. According to Heni Astuti, “Sardulo Sareswari” has its own philosophical meaning. Sardulo means tiger, while Nareswari means female or angel. If all this time reog is usually performed by male, this new innovation wants to give different performance. The establishment of the “Sardulo Nareswari” community has brought an impact on Sawoo Village’s women and surrounding communities. This community has performed several times in various regions, not only in Ponorogo, but also outside Ponorogo. The stigma in society which states women only konco wingking is eroded by the existence of this women’s reog movement. There is also value of self- reliance in women in Sawoo Village. This is proven by the increasing number of women contributing outside housewives work. According to Fajri and friends’, if this community developed further, it will be able to provide new cultural tourism potential for Ponorogo regency, especially Sawoo Village. This women’s reog community can be one of the new icons and identity of Ponorogo, especially the art of reog which has been performed by men.
“This new cultural tourism attraction is able to attract the attention of the people because it has uniqueness of a performing arts. Moreover, the performance of this female reog can encourage economic growth among the people and increase the income of Ponorogo regency, “said Fajri Kurniararasanty and friends in his PKMP-SH study.
