WROXALL PARISH COUNCIL CHAIRMAN'S REPORT APRIL 2021 When I wrote my report last year the first lockdown had just started and was preventing us from holding face to face meetings. A whole year on zoom and it is planned to go back to face to face meetings in May. It will be nice seeing those fellow councillors again who have agreed to continue to serve the parish. Councillor Helen Little has been coordinating assistance to residents around the village. In the early stages this was quite a busy job spending long hours in chemist’s queues waiting for prescriptions plus essential shopping. Its has also been a case of signposting people to help available and I must say that Helen has been fantastic in coordinating the support as has the local shop and Mo Smith who has been doing the daily deliveries. The Isle of Wight Council Helpline has also collaborated with the Parish Council as well as with Rodney Downer. We missed a couple of editions of The Way but have been back on track and I am grateful to Sue Chilton and Jackie Gallop for all their work on this each month and especially to the band of volunteers who deliver it. I would also like to thank all the advertisers who help to fund this popular magazine which is now printed each month by Beardsalls. I am proud to say that the Parish Council has now taken on a 30 year lease of the Recreation Ground. This is being used by the Football Club. New signs are soon to be erected. We had already been paying for the Grass cutting and have just had the field rolled which had been done for some years. I would like to see more residents using this facility to meet friends and family outside in line with COVID restrictions. Please clean up after you dog and dispose of your rubbish correctly. We have continued to provide grants to local organisations. We also made a donation in lieu of the Christmas tree lights to the Hospice. We have funded the mini bus for taking residents for their covid injections and I would like to thank Malcolm Hood for his co-operation. Jan Dyer and Jon Steele and their team of volunteers set up a food bank at the Stenbury Hall and I would like to thank you for thinking of the vulnerable families in the village. Jan and Jon and their committee are also working hard to get the Hall looking nice again and being able to hold events there. One of the ways of funding these works is the Wroxall Lottery. Details are in the Way Magazine and I would urge you to buy a ticket.
We have again enjoyed strong support from Rodney Downer our County Councillor. He has attended most meetings and taken forward items from the Parish Council and got most of these sorted out. He has also supported me at site meetings with Island Roads, Isle of Wight Council and the Planners. Wroxall now has a new safe gas main in St Johns Road. This entailed the road being shut for 8 weeks and made things difficult for residents who had to detour via Whitwell or Shanklin. I am grateful to the gas board for liaising with us, Southern Vectis for the shuttle bus linking route 3. We were not able to get a bus service for the north of the village during the closure but a taxi service was available. Many residents got around things by parking cars at the most appropriate end of the village and walking to it. Road resurfacing took place in Castle Road, this again required meetings with Island Roads as they decided that St Martins Road needed to be shut for the work to be carried out. Eventually after negotiation the St Martins road closure was not needed. This removed a lot of the anxiety from residents. Stenbury View and Yarborough Road are next on the agenda and I hope these can be done without too much inconvenience but unfortunately it won’t be without any. Both jobs need doing and it will be worth a little pain to achieve this. Discussions have been held up because of Covid in respect of the upgrade of the zebra crossing to a pelican crossing. We appear to be no further forward with the state of the Worsley. A new planning application had been made when I reported last year but there are still various issues to be resolved before it can be be granted. The play area which is under the control of Southern Housing will shortly be having 2 more items of play equipment installed following a successful planning application. There are still dog fouling problems but I believe we are not alone in having this problem. The long running works to the school look like they are almost complete. I believe the hall has been extended and there are some new classrooms. Rodney Downer has done an excellent job once again representing the village at County level and I would like to thank him for his hard work. The County and Parish elections take place on the 6th May and the County Boundary was changed by the Government despite representations and we will now be part of Wroxall, Lowtherville and Bonchurch rather than Wroxall and Godshill. I would like to thank my fellow councillors and Mike Taplin our clerk. Adrian Gallop, Chairman
Betty Thurston takes a walk down Memory Lane I was spurred on by Jackie's story in the April Way, to think back to my childhood in Surrey when we lived on a farm on Itchingwood Common, near Oxted. My parents emigrated to Canada in the depression and my two brothers and two sisters were born out there. That’s another story. My Grandma died just before I was born and my parents had to come back to England to help Grandad on the farm. I was born not long after. It was a great place to be born and I spent a lot of time with my sister playing on the common and on the farm. Then in the early 1940's a group of air men from the American Air Force moved into our neighbour’s large garage. They had a barrage balloon in the field next door to us. They were a happy bunch and they had a little terrier dog called Rip, so called because she kept tripping over the rip cords on the balloon, she was blind. When they departed Rip stayed with us as a member of our family. I was then leaving school and travelled up to London each day on the steam train, making sure I had my back to the engine as the smuts from the steam engine would come in the window. We had an indoor Morrison table air-raid shelter in our living room, which my sister and I would always sleep inside, and my parents would sleep on top when the sirens went off. A lot of the time I would get up early and go and bring the cows in from the bottom field for my Dad ready for milking. Then home and put on my high heels and posher clothes for the train up to London. I walked across London Bridge to my job as a telephone operator at the Continental Telephone Exchange, opposite St Pauls Cathedral. My job on a Saturday was to walk over the fields to change our accumulator, which made our lighting work as we didn’t have electricity then. Sweets were rationed during the war and my sister and I used to sit up a big oak tree on the edge of the Common on a Friday waiting for my Mum to come back from the shops with our bar of Fry’s peppermint cream. It was a very happy time and it continued until I married a sailor and moved down to Pennington near Lymington, where we lived in a caravan near to his base.

Now is the time of year when we shall be calling on all the Patrons of the Wroxall Minibus to ask if they would like to continue their patronage for another year. Due to the continuing Covid restrictions we are having to make the same arrangements when calling on you as we did last year. We would like to apologise in advance and hope you will understand. Country Matters It seemed as if spring had arrived with a mini heat wave but what a shock this week has been with feel like sub-zero temperatures. Leaving home at 5 am to go to a horse show in Sussex on Sunday we had to de-ice the lorry. Not expected in April. Good to see lambs are being born around the village plus some cows have calved on local farms. Please be aware when walking your dog. There are pigs, sheep, chickens and ducks up at St Martins Barn with eggs for sale in the shed if you fancy a walk. Time now to get ready to plant potatoes, beetroot, carrots, sweet corn in the garden. Sunflower and marigolds can be planted in small pots and be transplanted when they are established. Continuing on my early memories of life on the farm. I got my second pony Tufty a black Dartmoor. We went on holiday to Pontins in Torquay and my Dad and I went pony trekking. I think my dad regretted it as he had hardly ridden apart from the cart horse at his family farm, Millbank at Sandford. It was the end of the season and the ponies were being sold off. Tufty was delivered to Beaulieu Road sale yard and Anna was sold. I attended my first horse show with Tufty at Northwood show ground. Pony club camp followed initially at Redway Farm Merstone. Mum started doing farm bed and breakfast around 1966. We used to all sleep in the playroom so we could take more visitors some of whom returned year after year and became lifelong friends. I clearly remember one family who worked for Macintosh’s sweets (quality street). No en-suites in those days. The toilet and basin upstairs, bath downstairs was by arrangement. I think a couple of bedrooms had basins in them.
