W EDITOR’S LETTER JAY GEIER Well, 2019 is here and will be well under to our members, so I’d like to extend the same message way by the time you receive this issue of I gave my team to all my clients too. You’ve invested in The Practice. Take a deep breath! Every new year it feels like training solutions, and for some of our higher performing we all shake our heads and think, “Wow! I can’t believe it’s members – coaching memberships, which are proven to actually (insert year).” And yet, boom! It really is, and here bring you results. MARCH 3-day Wealth Summit in Sandestin, FL: 151 Doctors and their spouses spend 3 days mapping out their personal net worth plans with Jay. Due to overwhelming feedback from the clients who attended, Jay vowed to offer more opportunities for his clients to ward off complacency by creating 10-year net worth plans. DECEMBER The Executive Leadership As many of you know, the SI Team University has been closed to everyone except 5X Office Team Leaders for the past two years. In 2017, the leaders were taught skills to help their Doctors and practices to achieve their Big Year game plan goals. In 2018, their leadership training kicked up a notch to an Executive Leadership level. The two-year leadership program has concluded, and the results are in on who was named Leader of the Year! The Leader of the Year Contest Winners! $2,500 CASH PRIZE $5,000 CASH PRIZE Danielle Stocks Betsy Gelinas from Dr. Robert Lalor’s & Dr. Mary John’s office from Dr. Drew Wilson’s & Dr. Joshua Osofsky’s office Overcoming obstacles is not foreign for Danielle Stocks. For 11 years, Betsy Gelinas has worked at Henniker Family In college she was on a trip to Costa Rica where she Dentistry. With the addition of 5X, the Doctors were asked to survived a fatal bus accident and was stuck in the country, choose some leaders within their office. Betsy was one of their having lost her passport in the accident. Her confidence first picks – they knew she had some leadership abilities, but was low and fear was high, but through her leadership she really performed at a higher level than even they thought development journey she has blossomed as a person and she would. She learned the hard way how to manage a team as a leader. Her team said that she not only takes the time when three of her full time hygienists were unexpectedly to step away to work on the bigger picture as a leader, but out at the same time. She now has confidence that always jumps in when needed. The Executive Leadership DECEMBER AND THE WINNER IS... Barrett Shupe from Dr. Travis Burkett’s office $7,000 CASH PRIZ BARRETT SHUPE FROM DRUMRIGHT DENTAL IN OKLAHOMA. As a former football coach, Barrett brought his talents from the field into the office. He hit the ground running his very first year in the practice by being enrolled in this Leadership Program and came out with a win for the Leader of the Year contest. His team says that he is extremely intentional about knowing each team member personally and getting others to like and respect one another. ESSENTIAL TOOLS INCREASE HYGIENE PRODUCTION WHY JUST RAISE THE CEILING ... WHEN YOU CAN BLOW THE ROOF OFF?! UNFORTUNATELY, THERE IS A HUGE MISUNDERSTANDING ABOUT ONE OF THE BIGGEST, IF NOT THE BIGGEST, MISSED GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES YOU HAVE IN YOUR PRACTICE. WHICH IS… YOUR YOUR HYGIENE DEPARTMENT! IS YOUR HYGIENE HYGIENE DEPT. DEPT. CLEANING YOUR CLOCK? Average hygiene production is $110 per hour… and has remained so for the last 15 years! That’s because the average dental hygienist focuses almost exclusively on cleanings and other “standard” procedures covered by insurance, just as they have for so many years. And yet, the hygienist is the second most trusted person in the Practice. Patients look to the hygienist as an authority to advise them on optimal oral care, and will invest in suggested treatments. Studies of our members’ Practices prove that hygienists who more fully leverage that trust for the benefit of the patient (and consequently the benefit of the Practice) produce $200 or more per hour! DID YOU KNOW…? HYGIENE SHOULD CONTRIBUTE AT LEAST 30% OF OVERALL PRACTICE REVENUE! Like you, though, your hygienists attend CE classes to improve their clinical skills, not to learn how to grow the department. That’s why CE trainings rarely translate into higher production for ANY of you! You and your hygienists must understand the TOTAL role they SHOULD be playing to boost department production, AND how to actually do that. 29 THE SCHEDULING INSTITUTE
QUANTIFY THE OPPORTUNITY Think of your Hygiene Department as a business within the business. To quantify the MISSED REVENUE OPPORTUNITY of that “subsidiary,” you need a calculator AND an understanding of how the department COULD AND SHOULD be generating production: % OF HYGIENE TYPES OF PRODUCTS AND SERVICES DEPT PRODUCTION 1. “Standard” - typically covered semi-annually by insurance 10 – 25% 2. Periodontal 25 – 40% 3. Adjunctive - preventative, restorative or cosmetic; typically not covered by insurance 40 – 60% Most hygienists focus almost exclusively on standard services, proud of themselves for getting as many patients as possible to come in for two cleanings a year. As a result, what should be the department’s SMALLEST source of production may well be their ONLY source of production! And a very stagnant one at that. For the vast majority of Practices, the latter two “buckets” represent the gaping hole you have in your revenue pipeline. Hygienists should be leveraging every visit to suggest OTHER products and services THAT ARE IN THE PATIENT’S BEST INTEREST. To be clear, we are not suggesting you “hard sell” what’s NOT in a patient’s best interest, just educate and influence them on the products and services they probably aren’t even aware of. GIVE YOUR PATIENTS THE OPPORTUNITY to understand the VALUE of paying out-of-pocket for things that would make them look and feel better. SO HOW DO YOU KNOW IF ALL OF YOUR “BUCKETS” ARE FILLING YOUR HYGIENE DEPARTMENT’S PRODUCTION? Some members like wearing their “financial hat” more than others and know their numbers forwards and backwards. It’s not enough to just know your overall Hygiene Production number! Really UNDERSTANDING how each “bucket” has or hasn’t contributed to overall hygiene production is the only way to grow further. You need to know what’s working, what needs improvement, and what should be eliminated that could actually be costing you. Even if you’ve developed a high-performing hygiene team with a strong department leader, you as the business owner can NEVER delegate the ultimate responsibility for setting growth goals and performance expectations that support your OVERALL Practice goals, unless you have a thorough understanding of ALL the elements.
