I decided to take an aerobics class for seniors. I bent, twisted, gyrat- ed, jumped up and down, and per- spired for an hour. By the %me I got my leotards on, the class was over. SS S June—July December 2020—January 2021 2020 2020 June—July WRITERS’ CORNER These beau ful memories were wri en by a group of resi- dents who watched the rain fall on a day in November. OUR MEMORIES OF THE RAIN I love the smell of the rain. The rain is very nice, mmmm I love the rain, and as long as the rain wasn’t heavy I didn’t mind it. I like the rain because it cools everything down and keeps it damp. Very heavy rain in Victoria where I grew up. I am not scared of the rain. Rain brings everyone together and brings lots of flowers. Heavy downpour and flooding 1974 – Lismore! We were so overwhelmed…. Was it ever going to stop? Red belly blacks in the house a1er the floods… Oh yeah! – Country! Yes! – that was a good lesson to us all. Mum always used to say ‘here comes the pi6er pa6er”. Coming home from school, walking in the rain and kicking the water in the gu6er and geDng wet. Playing in it! … Oh yes!
SS S December 2020—January 2021 2020 June—July We got into trouble when we got home – that’s true very true! If it rained or snowed, we s%ll had to go to school, Mum was very strict and it taught us to be strong. A cloud burst, and I got caught in a water drain on my pushbike, and got into big trouble when I got home for being wet, I do remember in Scotland, it was so sunny, I went to work and forgot my brolly. When going home on the double decker bus, I got drenched on it! The bus driver got so drenched, and said he hadn’t even been off the bus. It was so funny, because I could not see out of my spectacles because of the rain running down my face. When I got home, my mum only allowed me in the back kitchen and said “get to the bath now”. (Laughing),… I will never forget that memory. Singaporean rain!... You get a lot of rain and very li6le no%ce, and it doesn’t stop very quickly! But my favorite memory of today is it rained for the farmers!
SS June—July December 2020—January 2021 2020 2020 June—July Message from M As we prepare to say farewell to 2020 and to welcome 2021, I have found a few new le6ers of the alphabet that have become as familiar as B (birth), M (marriage) and D (death) and to me they are C (containment and Covid), S (separa%on and social distancing), PPE (personal protec%ve equip- ment or prayer, prepare, escape), L (love and lonely), F (fear and friendship) and T (trust and thankfulness). Personally, I am thank- ful that I live in a state that has taken the threat of the Covid virus seriously and acted to try and keep us all safe, even though some people have gone through very tough %mes with losses of all imag- inable types. I would like to thank our Sunnymeade family who have done their very best to keep, not only our Sunnymeade Com- munity safe but also the rest of the country. Hopefully if we all re- main vigilant and do not become complacent, 2021 will be a be6er year for most of us. Management, in consulta%on with staff, residents and their fami- lies, are planning some minor changes in the early future and into the New Year. If you have not been informed or would like some more informa%on, please see our admission team or the directors Michael and Anthony Walker. These changes will not impact on most of our residents and certainly not on the fabulous care and a6en%on given by our staff.
SS SS June—July 2020 December 2020—January 2021 Christmas this year will be vastly different for our residents, but I know that our remarkable staff will do their very best to make it a fun and enjoyable %me. Even though our par%es may be following the rules set by our State Health advisors, they are shaping up to be delighKully diverse and Santa will make an appearance, I am sure. If you are planning on taking your resident home any%me over the Christmas period, please advise the staff as early as possi- ble so that we can be prepared, and then we will all have a stress free transi%on from here to there. Should you be planning on over- night stays, it is vitally important that no%ce is given so that medi- ca%ons, clothing etc. is prepared for our resident’s safety and com- fort. I hope that our families and visitors have all had a chance to see the fabulous art work done by our arts and cra1s group and the garden courtyard by our avid gardeners. If you have not had a chance to see these examples of what our residents can do, or are not sure where to go, please ask the staff, especially our life style therapists who do a marvelous job with diverse and challenging ac- %vi%es every day. Our plans for the Christmas Season are all about families, the Sunnymeade family, God’s family and the Walker ex- tended family. Les and I wish you all the best for a Blessed, Joyful Christmas and a Safe, Happy New Year that con%nues to bless us all. M

S December 2020—January 2021 PAT’S PAWS Welcome everyone to the next edi)on of the newsle*er. I have recently been on six week’s leave and I am delighted to say I le a great team of clinicians looking a er the residents and staff while I was away. Mandy the Clinical Coordinator stepped in to my role with ease and had full support of all the registered staff. Feedback for Mandy is that she has been very approachable and staff members have been supported by her. As we all know there is no “I” in team and Mandy and all the other staff work well together to have a har- monious environment at work. It all comes “from the top”. Well done Mandy. We are in the middle of the state of origin with the deciding game on the 18th November. Many residents like to watch the game and, I am sure their families too. Some people get carried away and yell instruc)ons to the bloke on television (we know they can’t hear us). Very entertaining. On my first day back to work we had an unannounced visit from the Quality Aged Care Commission. The visit was to audit all of our services in the facility and par)cularly check with the residents that they are involved in their care planning and other services in the home. The clinical staff have asked residents to par)cipate in our recruitment program by giving us examples of what sort of ques)ons to ask at interview. We will then meet with the residents who have provided ques)ons and let them know the type of answers we have been given by poten)al employees. We have also planned to follow up with resi- dents regarding the appraisal of staff and having resident feedback area as well. These are just two of the ways we are including residents in our prac)ce. The resident feedback already is that they appreciate the opportunity. We will receive our Quality commission report in about a month’s )me. Our con)nuous improvement plan is burs)ng as we had ideas put in to prac)ce while the auditors were s)ll on the premises. I would like to give a big thank you for all the work that the staff at Sunnymeade do to provide care and services to our residents. Feedback from the visit was that we have happy residents who are comfortable being interviewed and le?ng them know how their life is at Sunnymeade. Un)l next )me, stay well. Pat Hamilton
