The MSU Tollgate Farm and Education Center "Evenings in the Garden" series is now virtual.
These sessions are held on Thursdays, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. A video link will be sent prior to the session
and a recording will be made available after the meeting.

March 11 - Jan Coppola Bills - Comfort, Ease, and Simplicity
Gardens should be our love, not our labor of love! Discover how sustainable gardening includes a variety of
practices that respond to environmental concerns. These practices are used in every stage of gardening
including design, planting and maintenance. Together we will develop a shift in perspective as we explore
how to garden with comfort, ease and simplicity.

April 15 - Dr. Bert Cregg, Professor of Horticulture and Forestry
Christmas Tree Production in Michigan: Michigan ranks third in the U.S. in Christmas tree production and
Christmas trees are grown in nearly every county in the state. Michigan’s Christmas tree industry is diverse
and ranges from small-scale choose-and-cut operations to some of the largest wholesale producers in the
country. In this presentation, Dr. Cregg, will discuss the current state of the Christmas tree industry in
Michigan and the challenges that growers face in growing a conifer seedling to the 8’-tall Christmas tree in
your living room.

April 29 - Dr. Wynne Wright, Associate Professor, Dept. of Community Sustainability
“A New Way to Farm: Why is Lavender Farming Growing in Michigan?”
Dr. Wright covers the growth and popularity of lavender farming in Michigan from an agro- sociological
perspective. With personal experience as a lavender farmer herself, Dr. Wright includes guidance on how to
get started growing and marketing the popular aromatic plant.

                       The Oakland Conservation District is now taking orders for their Annual Tree &
                       Shrub Sale. This years selection includes a wide variety of evergreens, hardwoods
                       and shrubs, along with potted blueberries and asparagus roots.

The Oakland Gardener - Oakland County, Michigan
The Oakland Conservation District provides informational assistance to farmers, homeowners, educators,
businesses, developers and local government agencies. The annual Tree & Shrub sale allows the Oakland
Conservation District to partner with other natural resource organizations, such as the Oakland County
Parks and Recreation, the Oakland Farmers' Market and MSU Extension projects..

                                   The Meadow Brook Garden Club invites garden clubs to schedule a
                                   horticultural tour of the gardens surrounding Meadow Brook Hall during
                                   the months of June, July, and August . A trained, knowledgeable docent
                                   will guide your group through the gardens and provide details about the
                                   plantings, design and maintenance of each.

                                   $50 for up to 12 people, $5 for each additional person.
                                   Tour lasts approximately 2 ½ hours.
                                   Reservations are required.

Spring Invasive Species Summit
Saturday, March 20th
10:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. via Zoom

Learn about "Invasive Species in Your Backyard" including common invasive species identification and
control, what species you can hand pull, and how to restore the area with native species.

Presentations from local invasive species organizations will also discuss common issues and how to solve
them, current projects, and emerging threats.

                                             Smart Gardening with Vegetables 101

                                             If you are new to vegetable gardening, take advantage of this
                                             opportunity to learn vegetable gardening basics in six easy
                                             sessions from the comfort of your own home. This self-
                                             paced, introductory online course provides all you need to
                                             know to successfully start and grow a vegetable garden.
                                             Whether you have a large space, small space or plan to
                                             garden in containers, you will learn research-based practices
                                             for success. From seed starting to harvest, you will learn
                                             important concepts needed to select and grow fresh
                                             vegetables from start to finish.

                                    Fruit Tree Pruning Workshop
                                      Thursday, March 25, 2021
                                               3 - 5 p.m.
Join horticulturist and tree-fruit expert, Amy Irish-Brown for an interactive overview of pruning strategies to
optimize both tree health and fruit production for apples, pears and various stone fruits. Learn from an
expert how to maximize your tree's potential through correct pruning techniques. Students will be
encouraged to submit their own photos for discussion and group participation.

                                  Tollgate Garden Volunteers

                                  Are you a Master Gardener or a home gardener who wants to expand
                                  your experiences and knowledge? MSU Tollgate Gardens are the perfect
                                  place for you. Here is the opportunity to continue your education by
                                  working side by side with seasoned gardeners. These smart and
                                  welcoming people are always happy to share their knowledge.

                                  Being a Tollgate volunteer has many advantages: participating in monthly
                                  programs with speakers, sharing your gardening experiences and making
                                  new friends. Garden workdays are every Saturday morning from 9 a.m.
                                  until noon with a hot dog and potato salad lunch provided after the
                                  workday.

                                  Tollgate is a 160 acre "oasis" located in the heart of Novi at the corner of
                                  Meadowbrook and 12 Mile Roads. Just look for the long white fence.

grounds of Meadow Brook Hall in Rochester MI.

these beautiful gardens, designated as a Proven Winners Signature
Garden. Master Gardeners and candidates will earn volunteer hours
toward your Master Gardener required hours.

Come and join us and meet fellow gardening enthusiasts. Experience is
not required.

The Meadow Brook Naturalists are a Meadow Brook Hall volunteer
group dedicated to the restoration and preservation of the woodland areas
around Meadow Brook Hall.

The Naturalists are looking for volunteers to help restore the woodlands
around The Hall by removing invasive plants and planting native trees,
shrubs and perennials.

Micah 6 Community Garden

                        Micah 6 Community provides resources and services to underserved
                        neighborhoods in Pontiac. A big part of this effort is the vegetable garden
                        behind Webster School which grows and distributes fresh produce to
                        those in the community. We are looking for volunteers.
