REOPENING OF TOURISM IN HAWAII TO TRANSPACIFIC ARRIVALS Hawaii’s tourist industry reopened on October 15, 2020 with the launch of the State’s “SAFE TRAVELS HAWAII” trans-Pacific entry program. Trans-pacific air arrivals may waive the 14-day self-quarantine if they pretest negative to Covid 19 within 72 hours prior to departure for Hawaii. Travelers are required to enroll in Hawaii’s “SAFE TRAVELS HAWAII” app. During the first 12 days, 97,718 transpacific and interisland passengers participated in the SAFE TRAVELS HAWAII program. November Update: The State revised the SAFE TRAVELS HAWAII program to require visitors to test negative and have results “in hand” within 72 hours of departure to Hawaii in order to waive the 14 day self-imposed quarantine. EXPANDING TOURISM TO INTERNATIONAL TRAVELERS Government officials in Hawaii and Japan have agreed on a testing protocol which starts on November 4th in Japan, with the first travelers arriving from Japan on November 6th. Hawaiian Airlines, Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways will resume flights. In 2019, transpacific and Japan travelers accounted for 86% of the 10.3 M visitor arrivals to Hawaii. (7.0 M US and 1.5 M Japan.) Hawaii is looking to expand its pretesting program to other countries, such as, Canada, South Korea and Australia. *MARCH 2021: UPDATE FOR HAWAII VISITOR STATISTICS The COVID-19 pandemic severely impacted visitor arrivals to Hawaii as of March 23, 2020 when the State implemented the 14-day quarantine on all transpacific air.
