2020 NETWORKING AND EDUCATIONAL FORUM ■ VIRTUAL EDITION MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Welcome to the 21st Annual IACP Networking and Educational Forum and welcome to the very first IACP Virtual Forum!! Our theme this year is The Door is Open. When we chose this theme in January we had very little idea of what our Forum would be like. Certainly, we did not envision being unable to meet in person, and that we would all be attending Forum from our offices or homes. When we had to make this decision there was sadness and many concerns, but also the awareness that this awkward circumstance could be turned into a great opportunity: the opportunity to have attendees from all over the world, speaking different languages, in different time zones, all connected at the same time from their countries. While attending Forum in the past has not been easy for many professionals, especially from outside of the US, this year we can offer to all Collaborative professionals the opportunity to join and attend. Our technology offers us the possibility of having Francesca King interpretations and recordings: participants will be able to attend not only from the comfort of their houses, they will also be able to follow many more workshops than usual, with their own timing and addressing their own needs. Forum has always been an incredible educational opportunity for Collaborative professionals, and this opportunity will certainly be even greater this year. But Forum has always been a precious moment for connections and relations, very dear to the hearts of our community. And living in times of lack of personal connection, many of us were concerned about how a Virtual Forum could deal with this aspect. Well, I am proud to say our Board, our Staff, our Local Host Committee worked really hard to ensure we would have connection, warmth and fun! In the end, the Door is Open revealed itself as a very appropriate theme for our Forum, even in these weird times. What we wanted to suggest is that the door is open to new ideas and reflections on the role of Collaborative Practice within the world of ADR. As we widen IACP’s mission (To transform the way families resolve conflict by building a global community of Collaborative Practice and consensual dispute resolution professionals) we wanted to host and foster a reflection on the synergies and the interaction Collaborative Practice can play with other ADR methods, mediation above all. This reflection will be deepened at Forum, in many workshops and in many PFIs. At the same time, the door of our community will be open to many more professionals and in many more countries than usual. While we might feel limited in our movements, we are wide open to influences from different countries and communities, to the reflection that if something works in a different area it might be worth considering in our jurisdiction or region. As many of us noted in these interesting times, Collaborative Practice is a global movement and a global thought, the only way to encourage its development worldwide is to be open, mind and soul. And that is what we are. Francesca King President, IACP Board of Directors 6| #CPopensdoors 21st Annual Networking and Educational Forum

It is the study of how people in relationships make choices. It can also be a guide for people in negotiations, helping them make choices that yield optimal outcomes for both of them. The use of Game Theory principles in settlement negotiations requires a special mindset and specific negotiation strategies and techniques, very different from a traditional family law perspective. A Game Theory approach to negotiations is a hand-in-glove fit with Collaborative Divorce, which positions professionals, not as bargainers, but as planners and problem solvers. In this presentation, Dr. Waldron presents the basics with regard to this new mindset, principles, strategies and techniques, all derived from Game Theory. Collaborative divorce has been a major change in direction of family law, recognizing what many have intuitively known was a flawed system and offers a more party Kenneth Waldron and family friendly approach to divorce. Game Theory principles can enhance the Collaborative approach by shifting the focus from short-term legal outcomes to long-term financial and family goals and provides effective planning tools. The authors also use game theory principles to propose alternative bargaining approaches, both in mediation and settlement bargaining, which increase effective communication and cooperation and increase the chance for optimal outcomes for both parties, and families when there are children. He has spoken to numerous groups of judges, attorneys, mediators and mental health providers nationwide, along with having made appearances on television, radio and participating in on-line interviews. Ken has trained professionals across the country in Structured Coparenting Counseling and Structured Coparenting Training Classes, a specialized program for reducing parenting conflict and increasing effective communication and cooperation between separated parents.
