– Officer Cadet J Womack, United States of America Forces4Inclusion Following the parade, guests heard from the Armed Forces Diversity Engagement Team about the Forces4Inclusion campaign. The primary aim of this team is to myth bust about the Armed Forces, and engage with the communities that they defend. The presentation was a tri-service collaboration of individuals in the Army, Royal Navy, and Royal Air Force, and covered some of the topical discussions that surround what people perceive to be life in the Armed Forces. For over 200 years Sandhurst has evolved to meet the changing requirements of the British Army and this evolution continues apace today. During their arduous 44-week course the Officer Cadets are trained to command soldiers in the contemporary and complex operating environment and for operations of the future. The enduring attributes are courage, character, and professional competence – which together should equip the
Officer for the responsibilities of unselfish leadership on first appointment. Expressing condolences over her demise, the Prime Minister said, “A glorious chapter in Indian politics comes to an end. India grieves the demise of a remarkable leader who devoted her life to public service and bettering the lives of the poor. Sushma Swaraj Ji was one of her kind, who was a source of inspiration for crores of people. Sushma Ji was a prolific orator and outstanding Parliamentarian. She was admired and revered across party lines. She was uncompromising when it came to matters of ideology and interests of the BJP, whose growth she immensely contributed to. An excellent administrator, Sushma Ji set high standards in every Ministry she handled. She played a key role in bettering India’s ties with various nations. As a Minister we also saw her compassionate side, helping fellow Indians who were in
distress in any part of the world. I can’t forget the manner in which Sushma Ji worked tirelessly as EAM in the last 5 years. Even when her health was not good, she would do everything possible to do justice to her work and remain up to date with matters of her Ministry. The spirit and commitment was unparalleled. Sushma Ji’s demise is a personal loss. She will be remembered fondly for everything that she’s done for India. My thoughts are with her family, supporters and admirers in this very unfortunate hour. Om Shanti”. The Hon President of India, Ram Nath Kovind said India has “lost a much loved leader who epitomised dignity, courage and integrity in public life, ever willing to help others, she will always be remembered for her service to the people of India”. Dr Rami Ranger CBE, Co- Chairman of the Conservative Friends of India said, “we the 1.3 billion Indians along with other communities are devastated with the sudden demise of our iconic leader. People come and go but very few touch the hearts of so many. Sushma Ji, will always live in our hearts and her legacy will act as a beacon for others and her significant role in public life will remain an inspiration for us all”. Mrs. Sushma Swaraj was a senior BJP leader and a former External Affairs Minister of India in the Hon. Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji’s Government from 2014 to 2019.

India revokes Article 370 of Indian Constitution on
Kashmir The President of India Ram Nath Kovind has revoked Article 370 of the Indian constitution which gave special status to the region of Jammu and Kashmir, allowing it to have a separate constitution, a state flag and autonomy over the internal administration of the state. The move was part of the Bharatiya Janata Party manifesto for the 2019 general election, when the party again pledged to integrate the state of Jammu and Kashmir into the Union of India. Critics fear the move is designed to change the demographic make-up of India- administered Kashmir by giving people from the rest of the country to right to acquire property and settle there permanently. However, the Indian government has argued that Article 370 has prevented the region’s development and its integration with India. Article 370 article, along with Article 35A, defined that the Jammu and Kashmir state’s residents live under a separate set of laws, including those related to citizenship, ownership of property, and fundamental rights, as compared to residents of other Indian states. As a result of this provision, Indian citizens from other states could not purchase land or property in Jammu & Kashmir. On 5 August 2019, the President of India Ram Nath Kovind issued a constitutional order revoking the 1954 order, and making all the provisions of the Indian constitution applicable to Jammu and Kashmir. Following resolutions passed in both the houses of Parliament, he issued a further order on 6 August 2019 declaring all the clauses of Article 370 to be inoperative. In addition, the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill was passed in both the houses of Parliament, which proposes to divide the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories to be called Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
A fitting tribute to Sardar Patel, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar & Dr. S P Mookerjee Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “The passage of key Bills pertaining to Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh are a fitting tribute to the great Sardar Patel, who worked for India’s unity, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, whose views are well known and Dr. S P Mookerjee who devoted his life for India’s unity and integrity.” He said, “In Parliament, political parties rose to the occasion, overcame ideological differences and took part in a rich debate that increased the pride of our Parliamentary democracy. For that, I congratulate all MPs, various political parties and their leaders.” The prime minister in a separate tweet said “People of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh would be proud that MPs overcame differences and discussed the future of these regions as well as ensuring peace, progress and prosperity there. The widespread support can be clearly seen in the final numbers, 125:61 in RS (Rajya Sabha) and 370:70 in LS (Lok Sabha).” He specially congratulated Home Minister Amit Shah. “Our Home Minister Amit Shah Ji has been continuously working towards ensuring a better life for the people of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. His commitment and diligence is clearly visible in the passage of these Bills. I would like to specially congratulate Amit Bhai!” Kasmiri Pandit are victims of ethnic cleansing Bob Blackman MP, Chairman of the British Hindus All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) and Vice-Chair of the Indo-British APPG , said ““I strongly support the revocation of Article 370. Jammu and Kashmir has always been an integral part of India and A370 has always been an anomaly: it has held the area back by starving it of investment, through the prevention of external ownership of land.
“Kashmiri Pandits must be guaranteed right of return after they were the victims of ethnic cleansing and this move should prevent any other minority groups being forced to leave the Kashmir Valley. “The valley provides excellent opportunities for agricultural and cultural handicraft exports, the development of hydro- electric power and tourism. “Most important, however, is clearing the area of terrorists – high security is paramount. “Narendra Modi has again shown proper and strong leadership in honouring the manifesto of the BJP – now is the time to properly integrate Jammu and Kashmir into the Indian constitution.” Britain’s most ethnically diverse Cabinet ever Prime Minister Boris Johnson has selected the most ethnically diverse Cabinet the UK has ever had with Sajid Javid becoming Chancellor of the Exchequer; Priti Patel as Home Secretary; Alok Sharma as International Development Secretary; Rishi Sunak as Chief Secretary to Treasury; James Cleverley as Party chairman and Kwasi Kwarteng as Minister for business, energy and industrial strategy. These Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) Ministers represent 18% of cabinet. According to the Institute for Government, there have been only five full cabinet members from such backgrounds ever. Some 14% of the population in England and Wales come from ethnic minority backgrounds, according to the 2011 census.
In addition, eight out of the 33 positions (24%) in Mr Johnson’s cabinet – including those who are not full members – have gone to women. This is slightly lower than Theresa May’s Cabinet of 2016 and Gordon Brown’s Cabinet of 2007, which both achieved 30% women, and is still far less than expected given that women and girls make up 51% of the population (England and Wales), according to the 2011 census. Critics have argued that Mr Johnson’s Cabinet is elitist with 64% of those attending cabinet from fee-paying schools and 48% having attended either Oxford or Cambridge university cited the BBC, according to figures from the Sutton Trust. Previous BAME Cabinet Members According to the Institute for Government, there have been only five full BAME cabinet members ever: Paul Boateng, Chief Secretary to the Treasury under Tony Blair Valerie Amos, International Development Secretary and Leader of the House of Lords under Tony Blair Sayeeda Warsi, Minister without portfolio under David Cameron Sajid Javid, Secretary of state for culture, media and sport and Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills under David Cameron, as well as Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government and Home Secretary under Theresa May Priti Patel, Secretary of State for International Development under Theresa May In addition to that, Patricia Scotland attended cabinet as attorney general and Sadiq Khan attended when his ministerial responsibilities as transport minister were on the agenda – both under Gordon Brown Her Majesty’s Government: July 2019 The full details of all ministerial and government

Engineering initiatives a tribute to the late Lord Bhattacharyya The achievements of the late Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya CBE FREng FRS are to be recognised with two dedicated tributes to continue his legacy, the Government announced on 16th July 2019. Lord Bhattacharyya, who passed away 1 March 2019, was formerly Regius Professor of Manufacturing at Warwick University and Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. As the founder of Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) he was widely recognised globally for his position as a leading light in the fields of manufacturing, engineering and technology. The reputation of WMG and Lord Bhattacharyya’s status as one of the UK’s foremost experts in manufacturing saw successive administrations call on his expert advice for a range of initiatives, including most recently the Government’s investment in battery technology through the Faraday Challenge. Business Secretary Greg Clark announced in the House of Commons two tributes designed to reflect Lord Bhattacharyya’s life and achievements by championing excellence in engineering education, and industry-academia collaboration. They are: a Bhattacharyya Award for sustained collaboration between universities and industry. This Award, administered by the Royal Academy of Engineering, will recognise the types of partnership being championed by the Government’s Industrial Strategy, that bring together academia and industry to tackle challenges across sectors; and
a Bhattacharyya Engineering Inclusion Programme in the South West Midlands area. This Programme will be an engineering Science Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM) education support programme for schools and FE colleges in the region, providing a providing a range of extra-curricular activities, resources and bursaries to engage and inspire young people to pursue further study and careers in engineering. Speaking in the House of Commons, Business Secretary Greg Clark yesterday said: Today I am pleased to announce a tribute to celebrate the contribution Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya has made to the UK, since he came here from India in 1961. He founded and led Warwick Manufacturing Group for nearly 40 years. Through his leadership, WMG has developed a global reputation in automotive research, the built environment, digital technology and healthcare systems, built on strong collaborations between academia and industry. Successive UK governments have drawn on his advice on manufacturing and technology and built strong lasting collaborative relationships with India and China. Kumar Bhattacharyya also championed high quality technical education so the tribute I am announcing today reflects both these important aspects of his work. Dr Hayaatun Sillem, CEO of the Royal Academy of Engineering, yesterday said: We are delighted to be working with BEIS on a new suite of programmes and awards to celebrate the life of the exceptional engineer Lord Kumar Bhattacharyya. Lord Bhattacharyya was a pivotal figure in UK manufacturing industry while having a long and distinguished career in higher education. The new award to promote longstanding industry-university
collaboration is a fitting tribute. In addition, the Academy is delighted to be supporting a new engineering inclusion programme for schools and colleges in the West Midlands to encourage children from diverse backgrounds into careers in engineering. Lord Bhattacharyya was a passionate advocate of diversity and inclusion and we look forward to working with the Warwick Manufacturing Group, local employers, schools and colleges to create future generations of engineers and technicians for our industries. Mayor of the West Midlands, Andy Street, yesterday said: Lord Bhattacharyya’s contribution to the West Midlands economy was immense, not least in helping to place our region at the cutting edge of next-generation automotive technology. We are also benefitting from the strong and lasting links he forged between industry and education, relationships that will help stand us in good stead over the coming years. But Kumar was also a friend, colleague and trusted advisor and I can think of no better way of growing his wonderful legacy than with these two new initiatives. The Award and the Programme will be opened officially from later this year. Jains deliver census petition to Number 10 Downing Street The UK Jain community, collectively called OneJAIN, and represented by the Institute of Jainology today delivered a
petition with 5,000 signatures to Number 10 Downing Street. They urged the Prime Minister to include ‘Jain’ as a religion in the next UK Census. Nemu Chandaria OBE, Chairman of the Institute said, “There is much confusion in the census terminology and Jainism is the only major religion not be included in the next census. The 2011 Census only captured 30% of the known UK Jain population and the current plans from the Office of National Statistics will not significantly improve that. The Census data is used to determine policy and funding for health, education and social care, as well as programming by broadcasters like the BBC. Capturing correct data from Jains living across the UK is vital if we are to ensure that the Jain community of included in decisions by the public sector.” The Institute of Jainology delegation included Mr Gareth Thomas MP, Chair of the Jain All Party Parliamentary Group and Mr Navin Shah, London Assembly Member for Brent and Harrow, who started the online petition. About the Institute of Jainology The Institute of Jainology (IoJ) was founded in 1986 and is an international organisation promoting Jain philosophy and values through the disciplines of art, culture and education. It represents the Jain faith in government and inter-faith matters in the UK and elsewhere. Over its 25 year history, the IoJ has co-hosted the Peaceful Liberators exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum London, published the Catalogue of the Jain Collection at the British Library, and launched the Jainpedia.org encyclopaedia. On 28th September 2014, the thirty or so UK Jain Organisations voted for the Institute of Jainology to form ‘One Jain’ and to lead them in matters of government and community. John & Kiran Shaw donate $7.5 million to the University of Glasgow The University of Glasgow has benefited from donations worth $7.5m from graduate John Shaw and his wife Kiran Mazumdar- Shaw, who have turned her biotech firm Biocon into one of the largest pharmaceutical firms in India. John Shaw’s donation of $5m to the Research Hub, currently under construction on the Western Infirmary site as part of the University’s £1bn campus development, will see space in Level 2 – the floor dedicated to public engagement – named Shaw Plaza. A further donation of $2.5m will create a new Professorial Chair to be named the Mazumdar-Shaw Chair of Precision Oncology. Mr Shaw’s career with the Paisley-based textile firm Coats included management and financial positions across the world and led to him meeting his future wife Kiran in Bangalore. When they married in 1998, her firm Biocon was a pioneering biotech venture, but Mr Shaw took early retirement from Coats and helped his wife transform the company from a small company into a biotech giant. Mr Shaw said: “As a proud alumnus of the University of Glasgow, I have the good fortune of making a gift at a time when the University is embarking on a major expansion. Both Kiran and I have the proud privilege of being awarded honorary doctorates. “The success of our company, Biocon, has allowed us to be philanthropic. Research at Glasgow resonates very closely with
Biocon’s principal interests in diabetes and cancer. Our gift therefore seeks to support research and precision oncology. The University of Glasgow has the potential to advance science to new levels and become a globally-recognised research hub.” The University’s Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Anton Muscatelli, said: “We are deeply grateful to John and Kiran for this act of extraordinary generosity. The Research Hub, currently under construction, will create a unique environment which will break down organisational silos to allow the collaboration across disciplines on which world changing research breakthroughs now depend. It will allow us to impact on many of the most pressing issues of our time including new treatments for chronic and infectious diseases and reducing poverty in the Global South, John and Kiran have long been supporters of the University, also helping develop the University’s strong scientific relationship with Biocon which includes joint PhDs at the University. I am delighted that we are able to do such important work together Scotland is a world-leader in Precision Medicine Professor Dame Anna Dominiczak, Vice-Principal and Head of the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences, welcomed the support for a Chair of Precision Oncology. She said: “Scotland is a world-leader in Precision Medicine and this support for Precision Oncology – an important branch of Precision Medicine – comes at a time when we are making significant progress. I am extremely grateful for the Shaws’ recognition of the importance of our work here at the University of Glasgow and for their financial support.” Glasgow-born John Shaw completed his MA in History/Modern History with Politics in 1970. He had attended the High School of Glasgow where he was a contemporary of a former Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Glasgow, Sir Muir Russell. His, brother, sister-in-law and nephew are all
Glasgow graduates, as was his late mother. Mr Shaw said: “I was the Chairman of the Adam Smith Society in my final year, 1970, and received a commission from the Officer Training Corps. I was awarded the Davidson Medal for Outstanding Cadet which I still deeply cherish. My time at the OTC was a very formative experience which taught me leadership and gave me the confidence to meet any challenge throughout my subsequent business career at Coats. It is this that binds me to my Alma Mater.” Asked what their message to young entrepreneurs, scientists and businessmen and women was, Mr Shaw said: “Building a business from scratch into a large enterprise takes courage, determination and endurance. Most importantly, it is a journey of risk management. Our message to young entrepreneurs and businessmen and women would be to pursue opportunities with a sense of purpose and a spirit of challenge. There are no guarantees or shortcuts to success.” Barnardo’s launches ‘Overcoming Poverty of Hope’ report Prominent British Asians Armeena Khan, Sonali Shah and Anila Chowdhry gave their support to Barnardo’s at the charity’s Annual Parliamentary reception yesterday (8th July 2019). Other prominent British Asians at the event in the House of Commons, included actors Priyanga Burford and Meryl Fernandes, as well as lifestyle blogger Rumena Begum. On the day newsreader, presenter, journalist and long-time humanitarian Natasha Kaplinsky OBE, was announced as the new President of
the charity. During the event a new Barnardo’s report, ‘Overcoming Poverty of Hope’, which looks at the concerns young people have for the future, including climate change, Brexit and crime, drew widespread support from attendees and the charities celebrity supporters. Barnardo’s ‘Overcoming the Poverty of Hope’ report reveals two thirds (67 per cent) of young people believe their generation will be worse off than their parents. It also reveals that 62 per cent of 16-24-year-olds feel the government cares more about older generations than their own. The economy was one of the most important issues for 30 per cent of BAME respondents, 23 per cent said jobs and education, 22 per cent education and 21 per cent selected crime. For white respondents 23 per cent said the economy was one of the most important issues, 18 per cent said jobs and employment, 16 per cent education and 17 per cent selected crime. The responses of both BAME and white young people reveal generally they are experiencing a ‘poverty of hope’. Armeena Khan said: “Barnardo’s is doing fantastic work in the UK with addressing the diverse and complex needs of children and young people. Today’s reception bears testimony to the hard work and vision of the charity, and I am keen to get involved and share my own global perspective.” Barnardo’s Chief Executive Javed Khan, said: “We are really grateful to all the celebrities, MPs and other supporters who came to the event to hear about Barnardo’s vision, values and the impact we have on the lives of the most vulnerable children in the UK.

British Asian Trust: India is the global home for impact investing Leading figures in UK development sector backed India as the best place in the world for impact investing, at the UK-India Week Social Impact Forum hosted by the British Asian Trust. Founded by HRH The Prince of Wales, the British Asian trust has led the way with its $11m Quality Education Development
Impact Bond, and called for social finance outcome funding to help bridge the Sustainable Development Goals funding gap. The impact investing sector in India attracted over $5.2 billion between 2010 and 2016, with over $1.1 billion invested in 2016 alone. Indian society and economics have undergone enormous change since the 1990s. Its GDP continues to grow steadily, at a rate of 7.3% in 2018/19, and it is classed as a middle-income country by the World Bank. The increasingly dynamic and innovative climate in the country is spreading to the development sector, with funding driven by Government, local CSR, a growing Indian philanthropy market and impact investment. This entrepreneurialism, along with a good ecosystem for impact investment and the willingness of state and national governments to work with business and other third parties, makes India ripe for new ways of funding. According to a newly published report on UK-India relations by the Foreign Affairs Select Committee, the Indian diaspora in the UK are a hugely important resource in developing personal and professional ties between the UK and India. Following on from evidence submitted by the British Asian Trust, the report urges the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to work more closely with the diaspora, promoting talent from the community into bespoke roles aimed at engaging Indian businesses and policy makers. Last year the world’s largest education development impact bond (DIB) was launched in India, led by the British Asian Trust and an impressive consortium of public and private sector partners. With funding invested into education NGOs, this DIB aims to improve literacy and numeracy skills for hundreds of thousands of children, drive a focus towards outcomes in the development sector and transform the way education is funded in India. The Leaders’ Summit lies at the heart of UK-India Week,
organised by India Inc. annually as a high-impact series of events and interactions to set the pace for the bilateral relationship. As part of their commitment to strengthening UK impact investment in India, the British Asian Trust and India Inc, the organisers of UK-India week, will be hosting a social finance forum with diaspora involvement in India next year. Abha Thorat-Shah, Executive Director (Social Finance) at the British Asian Trust, said: “India has led the way in recognising the role private sector must play if we are to succeed in overcoming the challenges posed by the Sustainable Development Goals – across education, health, gender equality, climate change and employment. “It has pioneered innovative finance solutions for development, such as the $11m Quality Education Development Impact Bond to drive up literacy and numeracy standards in India, and we expect to see this continue across the country. “As India establishes itself as the global home for impact investing, new funders will emerge – increasing the overall pot of money in development. The potential of social finance outcome funding is huge: if just 1% of global capital market investment was dedicated to it, we could fill the SDG funding gap.” As part of UK-India Week 2019, Abha was included in the prestigious India Inc’s ‘100 Most Influential in UK- India Relations’ list – an exclusive list of key influencers and leaders that enrich and help strengthen the UK-India relationship. Dr Rajiv Kumar, Vice-Chairman of the National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog), policy think tank of the Government of India, said: “We welcome the commitment from our partners in the UK to continue to drive impact investment in India. India is proud to be at the forefront of an entrepreneurial approach to philanthropy, through Development
Impact Bonds and other innovative financing mechanisms to attract new private capital. Once unleashed, we see the huge potential of this type of funding to tackle development challenges and improve the lives of successive generations. We look forward to working with the development sector in the UK to take impact investment in India to a new level in the coming years.” About the British Asian Trust The British Asian Trust supports the development of a South Asia that maximises the potential of its people, and that is free from inequality and injustice.
