PRESIDENT’S REPORT Welcome to the 2018 season and we look forward to continued success both on field and off field. After several seasons of chasing that elusive Senior premiership we have reset our agenda to focus more on nurturing the local talent and just as importantly on instilling our community values throughout the club. Our recruiting focus was on securing our home grown talent and look forward to seeing our footballers and netballers make their mark on the competition. An enormous amount of work goes into recruitment, securing coaches, filling team support roles etc. Thanks to all those that have done their bit. The committee has been very busy over the Summer preparing for the season and organising improvements to our facilities. The major work has gone into a full renovation of our outdated kitchen. We have installed a POS system for the bar and canteen, new bench tops for the restrooms, new key system, and a multitude of other little jobs done around the place. Thanks again to one of our major sponsors the Neerim District Community Bank for their challenge grant, that has made these upgrades possible. Also, to the volunteer labour that turns a small project into a major upgrade. Another highlight of our Summer was the club helping out the Neerim Show Committee in running the rodeo and show. Without your help, our town would not be able to run these events. To be able to rustle up 30+ volunteers on Australia Day weekend shows the great community culture we have in this town. To run a football and netball club these days takes an incredible amount of time and dedication from all involved. Thanks to all that have helped in getting the teams on the court & field and presenting our facilities in such fine condition. We will be unfurling the 2017 Reserves Premiership Flag, just before the start of their game today. Welcome to the Nyora club as we kick off the 2018 season. We look forward to a “getting back” into the footy and netball, and wish all players a fun, injury free year. After today’s game, please join us in the rooms for a drink and pizza. GO CATS! Dave Johnson, President The Cat 2018 3
SENIOR REPORT Coach: Nick Humphrey Welcome everyone to our 2018 campaign. This week feels like it’s been a long time coming and I personally am ready to move forward and very quickly with our young list. This year is an exciting one in a lot of ways, but none more so than to be a part of the next chapter in our great footy club. After an off season full of challenges I can't wait to see our boys develop and stand up as the new front to the club. After being a player at the club for some time on and off, it was definitely disappointing to have not got the success we were chasing and were so close to challenging over the last few seasons. Some players and coaches have moved in different directions and this is not new to football. Our one hundred percent view, is to focus on the young men who want to be here - and there are plenty of opportunities there to grab that may not have been in the past. After a stand out pre season, I've appointed Aiden Dibsdale as captain of the senior team and I’m sure he will continue to mature as a player and leader. Mat Churchill, as coach of the reserves, has been a great support to me and really stepped up with his work behind the scenes. He will be a huge asset to me this year as a first year senior coach. Great to have had some of our 3rds boys want to apply some time to our pre season and we definitely have a strong future with some of the kids coming through, best of luck to Mort and those boys. We will have some big challenges along the way and there will be lessons learnt and mistakes made, but a huge focus will be making sure we all enjoy this time together. Good luck to all teams and the netball girls. GO CATS! Humper The Cat 2018
RESERVES REPORT Coach: Mathew Churchill G’day everyone. Well we are on the eve of another footy year. I’m grateful to be continuing in my coaching role and cannot wait to get back into it. For the reserves last season couldn’t have gone to script any better, bringing a flag back home to the cattery. It was just reward for hard work, not only last year but for our consistency in the ressies, having been so close in the previous couple of seasons under Hummers and we will be aiming to defend our title this year. Our off season wasn’t ideal. Having to see a number of team mates and friends leave over the summer for other opportunities was tough, but I wish them all the best with their future football endeavours. I’d also like to thank Allan for the support he gave me in my first year. He was a great mentor and gave me plenty of his time. Good luck Ducky with your role at Gippy Power. With plenty of faces leaving, we welcome many new ones and I believe the future is looking very bright. In miserable wet conditions at Boolara two weeks ago we saw plenty of positives from all grades and there will be plenty of senior opportunities for anyone who wants to earn it. Both senior sides that run out today will look very different to the sides that finished in 2017, however we have a fantastic young group with plenty of energy and I couldn’t be more excited for them and the year ahead. Good luck to all coaches. Mort with the 18’s boys, I know falling agonisingly short last September, your lads will be hungrier than ever to go one better. Pez, in your first season, taking the reins of the 16’s, all the best mate. From what I’ve seen on the training track you’ve got them off to the best possible start. Lastly, the bloke that’s retired 6 times—he cannot stay away! Boys get behind him because he is putting his all in and he is right behind you blokes. Good luck Hump. Also to the girls, hope you have plenty of success and all the best for the year ahead. Welcome and good luck to Nyora today. CARN SOUTH! Churchy The Cat 2018 5
THIRDS U18’s REPORT Coach: Mort Diston Like all football and netball teams, the pre- season is over and today we are looking forward to our first game of the 2018 season. Our 3rds and 4ths (who could do with a few extra players) have been training well with consistently good numbers at training. A practice match against Boolarra a fortnight ago (which was predominantly a 16’s match) saw 14 of my 17 boys turn up to play, which shows how hungry they are, to go one better than last year. We welcome a couple of new players to the team this year. Christian Robertson-Edgar who lives local, has come across from Drouin and Bailey Ward returns after missing last year. Both will be a great asset to this team. Captain for this year is Rhys George. Rhys was co-captain last year, suffered an ankle injury on the eve of the finals and never got back to his brilliant best and he is keen to lead this team all the way this year. Vice Captain is Josh White, who had a terrific year in the 4ths last year and topped it off with an outstanding finals series in the 3rds. This is just a natural progression for him, as one day I’m sure he will lead this Club. Neither of these two boys will let this team down when they are needed. Once again I am very fortunate to have Deb Beck as my Team Manager. I would be lost without her on a Saturday as would most of the players. Aidy White will do the running this year. My biggest problem will be getting Aidy off the ground once the message has been delivered. We will have to work on that one! Finally, I wish Humper (in his first year as senior coach), Churchy, Pezz (in his first year at coaching) and all the netballers a successful year. Have fun! GO CATS! Mort The Cat 2018
FOURTHS REPORT Coach: Connor Perry Welcome to the 2018 season. I’m really excited (and surprised) to be coaching the U16’s team this year. It is a privilege to see these boys grow through their footy and into their senior careers. We have picked up Rhonan Perry, Tommo Crole, Jaccob Coad to join the Neerim South Cats this year. We welcome all the boys coming up from the junior U14’s. We’ve had some good numbers at training and they are showing good progress in skill and communication. Unfortunately we will be at a disadvantage this year without being able to play consistent games, due to the lack of U16’s teams in the EDFL, but we are looking forward to having a great season. Hopefully we will have a successful year. Please come and see me if you are willing to help out on game day, we will need water and boundary runners each week. I am also looking for someone to wash the jumpers each week, can you help out? Call me 0438 668 186. Thanks to Andy Smith, Team Manager and Bec Smith and Sian Clark who are my Trainers. Thanks to Aidy for convincing me to take on this job, I hope to do White Air proud! Go Cats! Pezz The Cat 2018 7

A CHAT WITH….. Debbie Beck Interview with Debbie Beck Editor of the Cat, Thirds Team manager, 2017 Best Club person, Business manager at NS Primary School, partner of Davin, mother of Harrison, Bailey and Rhys, proud owner of Tess and Meiko (the Maremmas) who are chook guards. My Earliest memory is learning to whistle. My father would teach me as he sat in our outside dunny in Wonthaggi (shows how old I am). At school I was shy and quiet. I don’t like talking about myself. My most treasured possession is my iPhone – I love it! I wish I had been an astronaut. I have wanted to be one since I started primary school. I use my telescope to look at the stars. I wish I hadn’t: stuffed up an email recently. At home I cook everything. I love to cook and I do the lot! My favourite gadget is soon to be an Apple watch. I’m very bad at kicking a footy, I was ok till my boys finished Auskick. I can’t face a cricket ball anymore either! I’m always being asked to help do everything. It’s not fashionable but I love Abba. The last belly laugh I had was when I was camping with family and close friends on the Murray River over Easter. If only I could be sure that Melbourne will one day win the premiership. Bailey barracks for them (poor kid, I blame my friend John) – I follow Collingwood. My friends say I can cook. The song I’d like played at my funeral is anything by Robbie Williams. My greatest fear is losing my boys. At the moment I am reading ‘A Sunburn Childhood’ by Toni Tapp Coutts about life on Killarney Station, NT. At the moment I’m listening to Spotify and my favourite old school band is the Eagles who I have seen live twice. My worst job was cleaning out the chook shed I often wonder when I will be able to say no (Dear Reader, this interview was only possible because Debbie didn’t say no). JOKES BY JOHN EMBARRASSING MEDICAL MOMENTS 1. A man comes into the ER and yells ’My wife’s going to have her baby in the cab’. I grabbed my stuff, rushed out to the cab, lifted the lady’s dress and began to take off her underwear. Suddenly I noticed that there were several cabs….. And I was in the wrong one! 2. At the beginning of my shift, I placed a stethoscope on an elderly and slightly deaf female patient’s anterior chest wall. ‘Big breaths’ I instructed. ‘Yes, they used to be,’ replied the patient.
