Oh What a Night...
                           Terese R. Carson
                           Vice President for Institutional Advancement

On Thursday, September 21, the Roncalli Family formally announced the launch of the
On This Rock: Building Faith and Family Capital Campaign. With over 350 guests in
attendance, the evening was filled with community, hope and excitement! Prayer, student
performances and personal testimony all set the stage for a successful celebration.

The evening began with a small reception to thank the volunteers whom have dedicated so
much time and effort in the early stages of the campaign. Dr. Joe Hollowell gave a campaign
update to the group followed by some initial ground breaking with a bulldozer pushing dirt
in the area designated for our new Family Room/gymnasium. The excitement was incredible
and carried into the gymnasium for the main event. After dinner, the official program began
with testimony from Dr. Hollowell, Principal Chuck Weisenbach, campaign chairs Dr. Dave
and Anne Wolf and Dave and Anne Doyle and RHS senior Lizzie Fox. The official campaign
video was also premiered for all to see! View the video at www.roncalli.org/capital_campaign.
The Rebel Rhapsody Show Choir performed and student volunteers served and attended to
        the guests.

Through generous pledges to the campaign, at the end of the evening on September 21, we
were able to announce that the campaign was well over $5.9 million dollars pledged. That is
a fantastic start to this most important effort. The campaign is scheduled to continue in the
active phase through June 2018. We still have much money to raise in order to complete all
        of the initiatives.

On behalf of the entire Roncalli Family, I am hoping and praying that you want to be a part
of this campaign. Great momentum and enthusiasm surround making these facility upgrades
to our campus. Every dollar raised will make a difference. Please contact me at 317.788.4098
or at tcarson@roncalli.org to make a donation or pledge to the campaign. This is the time to
be a part of making Roncalli history!

Advent: The Season of Hope
                              Fr. Dave Marcotte
                              Chaplain
Imagine how our Blessed Mother must have felt upon receiving the news that the impossible was
about to take place within her, that she would give birth to the Savior. How could she tell her
betrothed, Joseph? What would her family think? Who would believe her?

“Do not be afraid, Mary,” the angel says to her. “Nothing will be impossible with God” (Luke 1:30,
37). We know the rest of the story. The impossible was indeed made possible, not only at the birth
of Jesus, but in the many miracles he performed, and most of all at his Resurrection. If God could
accomplish all this, imagine what God can do in your own life. Advent is the season for imagining
what is possible, for hoping beyond hope.

But it is also the season when hope can be hardest to find, dreams hardest to believe. The days draw
short, the nights are long and the air turns cold. Expenses may loom at a time when resources are
scarce. Separation, grief, loneliness, and depression are no strangers to the season. Hope may be in
short supply during this time. We need Mary’s inspiring example of courage and trust in the face of
        uncertainty more than ever.

Mary can’t guarantee us a smooth ride, however.
Nor can Mary promise us a season free of
anxiety and worry. What Mary can offer us is
a remarkable and inspiring example of courage
in the face of adversity, patience in the face of
uncertainty, and hope beyond hope that the
impossible is indeed possible. Our story isn’t
finished, either, no matter what challenges or
wounds burden us this season. All things remain
possible with God. This is the miracle of Advent.
We can once again dream the impossible dream-
        and reach the unreachable star.

Canyon Rafting trip this past summer. Our
patchwork group of scientists, professors, and
geocachers spent eight days traversing the
                                      canyon and its side streams.

Sleeping under a starry sky surrounded
by canyon walls several hundred feet high
without light pollution from the city was
                                      mesmerizing and powerful.

I took home a variety of information and
photos to share with my students about the
canyon. I learned about the downstream
impacts of a dam, the fragile desert soils, how
scorpions fluoresce under black light, and
evidence of deep time across two billion years
old. We examined fossils, invasive species,
faulting, dikes, and volcanic lava flows.

FOUR REBELS EARN EAGLE
                      SCOUT HONOR
Roncalli High School seniors Jason Brown, Kyle Carpenter,
sophomore Andrew Goebel and freshman Ryan Sissons each
passed their Eagle Board Review and have earned the distinction
of being an Eagle Scout, which is the highest honor bestowed by
                      the Boy Scouts of America.
Jason Brown R’18

For his Eagle Scout project, Brown built steps on the Roncalli
campus to join two practice fields that are divided by a steep hill.
A group of 15 people helped Brown complete the project in about
160 hours of work. The cost of the project was $1,400 and was
funded by friends, family and local businesses. He is the son of
Jeff (R’82) and Joan (R’91) Brown and they are members of St.
                      Jude Catholic Church.

Sissons built a Gaga pit and benches for the students at Abraham
Ryan Sissons R’21 Lincoln Elementary in Perry Township. The request came from
special needs teachers who wanted a safe place for their students
to learn from organized play. Gaga is similar to dodge ball but
you can only roll the ball and you are out if you are hit below
the knees. He is the son of Sean and Debbie Sissons and they are
members of Our Lady of the Greenwood Catholic Church.

For his Eagle Scout project, Carpenter assisted the campus
beautification efforts at his home parish, St. Barnabas Catholic
Church. He and his volunteers spent 200 hours building barriers
Kyle Carpenter R’18 to avoid erosion of a crushed stone walk and also built some
storage areas for parish items. They moved more than three tons
of retaining wall blocks to complete the stone-edging portion of
the project. He is the son of Brian and Coral Carpenter.

Goebel built a mobile concession stand, complete with electrical
outlets, for the Franklin Township Soccer Club. He spent 200
hours on this project over a 10-month period. The concession
                      stand is a 12 x 6 foot building secured to a 14 foot landscaping
trailer. He is the son of W. Scott and Laurie Goebel.

INDIANA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION HIGHEST SCHOOL RANKING
Roncalli High School was named an Indiana Four Star School by the Indiana Department of Education.

“Receiving designation as a Four Star School signifies a pursuit of academic excellence among both the students and the
administration,” said Dr. Jennifer McCormick, Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction. “I am honored to recognize these
Four Star Schools and their leadership for their hard work and dedication to preparing their students for a bright and
 prosperous future.”

Created in 1988, the Four Star School Award has been in existence for nearly 30 years. To receive Four Star designation, a
school must receive an “A” on the state’s A-F accountability system, have excellent ISTEP pass rates, carry overall high
graduation rate (if applicable), and show success in closing achievement gaps. A total of 41 schools received the award
 throughout the state.

The ACT college readiness assessment is a standardized test used to evaluate high school achievement and for
college admissions purposes in the United States. Most high schools in Indiana use this test to understand
student achievement and to evaluate areas for growth in curriculum. As the chart shows, Roncalli students
perform strongly on this assessment compared to their peers in other schools.

END OF COURSE ASSESSMENTS (ECA)
In 2010, the State of Indiana began testing for competency in Sophomore level English and Algebra 1 with a
battery of tests known as the End of Course Assessments (ECA). The ECA tests have replaced the ISTEP test as
the way in which high school students now must demonstrate their readiness to graduate. Only by passing this
exam can students earn a diploma in Indiana. The most recent data from these tests given in the spring of 2015
was recently released on the Indiana Department of Education website and is presented in the charts below.

INDIANA ACADEMIC ALL STARS
Since 1987, The Indianapolis Star in concert with the Indiana Department of Education has worked to

17 highlight students who have demonstrated academic excellence over the course of their high school
career. Each year the top 40 graduates in the state are selected to receive the prestigious title of
Indiana Academic All Star. Over the course of the program, 16 Roncalli graduates have now been
recognized. Only four high schools in the state have had more All Stars. In May of 2016, senior Hannah
Fikes joined this long list of distinguished Roncalli scholars.

NEW CLASSES OFFER STUDENTS A CREATIVE OUTLET
Several new classes have been added this year at Roncalli, giving students
a chance to learn the digital skills they need to be creative in digital
design, photography, videography and web design.

“Teaching digital design has been one of the most enjoyable things I've
done as a teacher at Roncalli. I have a full class of students who are

RHS PARTICIPATING IN THE LATINO OUTREACH INITIATIVE
In response to national data showing Latinos to be both the fastest-growing segment of the U.S. Catholic Church and the
most under served by Catholic schools, the University of Notre Dame's Catholic School Advantage Campaign founded
the Latino Enrollment Institute (LEI) in 2012. This initiative identifies Catholic schools which have capacity (open seats)
and favorable demographic potential (growing number of Latino families in the surrounding area), and guides motivated
principals and select faculty leaders toward attracting and the serving Latino students more effectively.

Roncalli High School was selected by the Archdiocese of Indianapolis’ Office of Catholic Schools to participate in the
Latino Outreach Initiative, sponsored by the University of Notre Dame’s Latino Enrollment Institute.

This past summer RHS Principal Chuck Weisenbach and Co-Director of Guidance Lynn Starkey attended the LEI
conference at Notre Dame to kick-off our school’s participation in the program.

Roncalli has now formed an LEI team whose task is to oversee the efforts to generate and implement strategies that will
allow our school to better meet the needs of the Latino population on the southside of Indianapolis.

RHS will receive comprehensive, ongoing support from the LEI at Notre Dame. Additionally, the archdiocese has
hired Mr. Phil Gonzalez as its Latino Outreach Coordinator. “We are very excited to partner with Notre Dame and
the archdiocese in our efforts to grow our Latino enrollment and to better serve the needs of the Latino community,”
commented Mr. Weisenbach.

BRYAN & MARGARET HENDRICKS HONORED
For their lifetime commitment to Catholic Education, the Roncalli High School Alumni Association
awarded Bryan and Margaret Hendricks this year’s winners of the Saint John XXIII Award.

Honorees are selected on the basis of living a life that is an example of dedication to youth and
spreading the love of Jesus Christ by fervently living their vocation.

The Hendricks are truly extraordinary in the variety and depth of the ways they have served both
Roncalli and the Archdiocese of Indianapolis.

Bryan served as the Roncalli girls golf coach for 22 years and in that time his team won nine
Sectional Championships, seven Marion County Championship and four podium finishes at the
        State Tournament.

Margaret has served as the coordinator of the Promise to Keep Chastity Program since 1994.
Over the past 27 years she developed and trained nearly 10,000 peer mentors who have made
presentations to over 110,000 students around the State.

They both worked together to lead the Roncalli contingent to the National Pro-Life March in
Washington, D.C. They have led our group to our nation’s capital for 10 straight years. They both
worked as Team Leaders on our Christian Awakening Retreat for our Seniors for 18 consecutive
        years.

                RONCALLI WELCOMES OVER 900 GRANDPARENTS

Roncalli welcomed over 900 grandparents on Friday, October 6 for our annual Grandparent’s Day
celebration. Grandparents gathered in the gym for a day that included an all-school mass, a short
program led by Roncalli President Joe Hollowell, a pep rally and class visits with their grandchild.

Rebel for a Day!
Between the 10 South Deanery 8th grade classes and individual guests, Roncalli has already hosted
over 370 students for shadow visits! For the deanery visits, the classes heard from a current senior
who graduated from their grade school, watched a video created by Roncalli graduate Harrison
Pogue R’11 and played a trivia game to see how well they know RHS. After the morning program,
they were paired with a current freshmen or sophomore, and they attended 3rd and 4th period with
their host. Next came lunch, and then they heard from a Roncalli administrator, who spoke to them
on how their experience as a Rebel will be unique to them as an individual! Each group ended their
visit by watching a performance by the RHS Show Choir.

If your 8th grade son or daughter is interested in being a Rebel for a Day, please contact Director
of Admissions, Allie Ross R’04 at aross@roncalli.org to set up the visit. She will work with you on

JAFFE NAMED ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR
Roncalli High School Alumni Association presented John Jaffe its
Alumnus of the Year award. This honor commemorates service and
dedication to Catholic education.

As a member of Bishop Chartrand’s very first graduating Class of 1966,
Jaffe went on to work in the construction industry for nearly 40 years
ending his career as a specialist in all forms of concrete construction. Jaffe
has served the Roncalli family for over 25 years as a wise steward of our
community resources through his work on the Roncalli Board of Directors
Facility Committee. During John’s time on the Committee, nearly $20,000,000 of construction projects have
been completed. His work and the work of his fellow committee members has saved this community millions
of dollars during that time.

John and his wife Mary are parishioners of St. Barnabas Catholic Church and have three children whom have
graduated from Roncalli. John and Mary are now Roncalli grandparents as well.

                        GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY CLASS HONORED
Each year at our Homecoming festivities, the Roncalli High School
Alumni Association honors the Golden Anniversary class and the 25-year
anniversary football players, cheerleaders and coaches.

The Kennedy Memorial and Bishop Chartrand Classes of 1968 were
welcomed to Roncalli to begin a yearlong Golden Anniversary celebration.
These two classes will attend our graduation ceremony next spring to be
inducted into the Roncalli High School Golden Guard.

Also honored at halftime were the football players, cheerleaders and coaches from the 25-year anniversary
class, the Roncalli Class of 1993. This hard nosed football team set the foundation for a successful future on
the gridiron at Roncalli following their graduation.

MCHUGH NAMED HONORARY ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR
The Roncalli Alumni Association named Margee McHugh the 2017
Honorary Alumnus of the Year. Each year, the Alumni Association
recognizes individuals for their service and devotion to education.
Not only is she a Central Catholic alumnus, McHugh returned to the
school and has been a beloved teacher there "more years" than she can
remember. Currently, she teaches 8th grade at Central Catholic and many
of her current and former students joined her on the field to celebrate her
award.

McHugh graduated from Manual High School in 1980 and has devoted her life to educating future Rebels
at Central Catholic School. McHugh has impacted generations of south side families and her fellow faculty
describes her as the heart and soul of Central Catholic.
