The Bi-Monthly Guide to PBS Michiana - WNIT Issue No. 6 November - December 2021 Vibrant Light Stained Glass of the Basilica AT NOTRE DAME A NEW PBS MICHIANA - WNIT DOCUMENTARY Saturday, December 18 at 9pm Sunday, December 19 at 4pm Saturday, December 25 at 10:30pm on 34.1 Sunday, December 19 at 8pm on 34.2
Board of Directors A Message from Greg Giczi President and GM, PBS Michiana – WNIT Chairman James Hillman Vice Chair Robert G. Douglass Secretary Hayley G. Boling Hello Enthusiastic PBS Michiana Viewer-Members, Treasurer William J. Schmuhl, Jr. The holidays must just be around the corner. I was shopping for a Get Well card and saw Christmas Immediate Past Chair cards on display! I actually bought one, they had a very cute “from the dog” card I plan to give to my Susan Ohmer, Ph.D. wife (on behalf of our dog). I didn’t find one, so far, “from the cat.”. The holidays are certainly upon us. I will enjoy seeing my neighborhood kids in Halloween costumes; I’m generous with the treats because Directors so few come to our door, and I’m on a diet. Now, we’re off running toward Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Jim Arnold Christmas, New Year’s, and Super Bowl Sunday. Tania Bengtsson I thought our September-October program schedule was outstanding and November-December Marvin Curtis promises more of the same. December will be laced with many holiday specials - I’m particularly Joel D. Duthie pleased with our local ones. You will need to check inside your PBS Michiana – WNIT Planner Mary Horan magazine for all the times, but look for these…The Notre Dame Glee Club & Symphony 2021 Christmas Katherine Humphreys Concert, Goshen College Festival of Carols, Arts @ IU-South Bend: Raclin Holiday Sock Hop, the Brian Inniger Nutcracker from Southold Dance Theater, and Christmas at Loretto from the South Bend Chamber Paul Jordan Singers. We’ll also have the Purdue University holiday special, Amen! Music of the Black Church from Trevor Kubatzke Indiana University and many other national and regional groups. Be sure to check the schedules for John Lloyd both PBS Michiana-WNIT1 (channel 34.1) and WNIT2 (channel 34.2). Some programs appear on Christine M. Maziar both channels, but each channel has some unique offerings. Pat Moody Mike Pound Speaking of that unique programming, PBS Michiana – WNIT2 (channel 34.2) will be featuring Rebecca Stoltzfus, Ph.D. classic movies on Friday nights at 9 (encores Sundays at 4pm). Flip through the pages of your PBS James M. Summers Michiana Planner and pick your favorites. Our very first title will be The Jackie Robinson Story. Michael Wargo Vibrant Light: Stained Glass of the Basilica at Notre Dame will premiere on December 18th. Our Marcus Winchester PBS Michiana production team started working on this in 2020 and was delayed by Covid. This Linda Yoder production includes interviews and footage from Le Mans, France, as we show the beauty and tell the story behind the stained glass windows in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at the University of Notre President and Dame. General Manager (Ex-Officio Board Member) I’ve focused on our local programs, but there are many national ones to point out, too. I know many Greg Giczi viewers are anxiously looking forward to the Call the Midwife Holiday Special 2021 airing Christmas evening on PBS Michiana-WNIT1. Throughout the month on Sunday nights, we’ll be showcasing Charter Directors episodes of Season 1 of All Creatures Great and Small. And I can’t forget the “Charlie Brown” Arthur J. Decio* programs for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. Jerry Hammes Ernestine M. Raclin Thank you for your generosity to all the non-profits you have supported this holiday season. It’s still Jane Warner* financially tight for all of us as we provide more services while recovering from the pandemic. As your annual gift renewal to PBS Michiana – WNIT comes up, consider adding just a little more for 2022. I Dar Wiekamp* recommend our sustainer plan, like I use…just a moderate amount each month adds up to a big gift. Honorary Life Directors Mary Louise Miller Thank you for everything this year…your viewership, your enthusiasm for our organization, and your Carmi Murphy gifts. We can’t do it without you. Blessings to you and all those you love. Thomas Slager *Deceased Charter Director Sincerely, Greg Giczi President & General Manager 2
On the Cover Vibrant Light: Stained Glass of the Basilica at Notre Dame Over 100,000 visitors each year make their way to the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. Located on the campus of the University of Notre Dame, the Basilica is a reflection of faith and reverence. Forty- four stained glass windows offer beauty and story and are home to one of the world’s largest collection of 19th-century French-style stained glass outside of France. The story explores the significance of stained glass through religion, cultural impact, art, design, history and craftsmanship. We’ll see the birth of Notre Dame and the art of illuminating stories through powerful images. (All photos of the Basilica by Senior Producer, Brenda Bowyer).
