KŌWHAI PARK | SUSTAINABLY POWERING THE NEXT GENERATION 3 Introduction CHRISTCHURCH AIRPORT IS CREATING KŌWHAI PARK – A NEW CONCEPT IN RENEWABLE ENERGY THAT WILL HELP ENABLE NEW ZEALAND’S LOW CARBON FUTURE. Sited on 400 hectares of land adjacent to the runways, Kōwhai Park has the capacity to accommodate a range of renewable energy generation projects and storage solutions. Our plans for Phase One will deliver a 220-hectare solar array capable of generating 150 megawatts of solar energy to deliver: • Enough electricity to power 30,000 homes • The same carbon benefits as planting 1.25 million native trees and shrubs Our relationship with Solar Bay (an Australian renewable energy fund) and their $100 million commitment to the development of Phase One enables us to start. With room to grow, Kōwhai Park can deliver a range of renewable energies, including green hydrogen, on a scale New Zealand’s never seen before. This enables new industries to be established in Canterbury, including green data centres and vertical farming. The potential is exciting and we are looking forward to making it a reality alongside organisations that share our commitment to enabling New Zealand’s low carbon future.
4 4 KŌWHAI PARK | SUSTAINABLY POWERING THE NEXT GENERATION KŌWHAI PARK | SUSTAINABLY POWERING THE NEXT GENERATION Enabling NEW ZEALAND’S LOW CARBON FUTURE FOR THE PAST DECADE, CHRISTCHURCH We’ve been recognised as a global leader in carbon AIRPORT’S TEAM HAS SYSTEMATICALLY reduction and are on track to be carbon zero ahead of 2050. DECARBONISED OUR BUSINESS. Our goal has always been to do what we can to help others We’ve transitioned key assets so they no longer need fossil decarbonise too. We regularly share our expertise with fuels, this includes electrifying our light vehicle fleet and other businesses and organisations making the transition. retiring our terminal’s diesel boilers. This new project, Kōwhai Park, takes that approach up We measure all we can (including Scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon a notch through delivering clean energy to help New emissions, energy, waste and water) so that we can Zealanders transition away from fossil fuels. monitor our performance and strive to do even better. Since we first measured our carbon footprint in 2006, we’ve cut our Scope 1 emissions by around 90%. We have invested in the permanent restoration of native New Zealand forests to remove the remaining 10% (plus an extra 25%) so we are officially climate positive. That means we’re removing more carbon from the environment than we are emitting.
KŌWHAI PARK | SUSTAINABLY POWERING THE NEXT GENERATION 5 Project RATIONALE TO MEET THE CHALLENGE OF CLIMATE CHANGE, In New Zealand, we’ll likely see both electric and green NEW ZEALAND HAS SET ITSELF A GOAL TO BE hydrogen-fuelled aircraft service our domestic routes in CARBON ZERO BY 2050. the future. This presents a number of challenges and opportunities: Kōwhai Park is well-located to power those aircraft and will provide stability and resilience to the price and supply • We all need to make the transition from imported of renewable energy in New Zealand. fossil fuels to clean energy sources • That will put pressure on our renewable energy supply (electricity demand is forecast to increase by 68% by 2050) • We need to both increase and strengthen our renewable energy supply Aviation faces a big challenge. To decarbonise and decouple from fossil fuels, we need to develop new technology that is 100% reliable and safe. There’s already a global effort trialling and developing solutions.
6 6 KŌWHAI PARK | SUSTAINABLY POWERING THE NEXT GENERATION KŌWHAI PARK | SUSTAINABLY POWERING THE NEXT GENERATION Project OVERVIEW CHRISTCHURCH AIRPORT HAS COMMITTED 400 HECTARES OF LAND TO KŌWHAI PARK WHICH IS PERFECTLY LOCATED FOR RENEWABLE ENERGY PROJECTS, BEING: • Right beside New Zealand’s second largest city, Christchurch • Adjacent to Transpower’s National Grid • Close to Orion’s lines network that supplies Christchurch We operate on more than 1,000 hectares of land and have extensive experience building and managing property. This project has a brilliant team behind it, including Solar Bay and Worley. “This is something that New Zealanders should be “Kōwhai Park has all the ingredients for success. It’s in really excited about. There is nothing else like this in the right place, at the right time with the right expertise. the country – it’s innovative, far ahead of its time and It also has the right mindset behind it given Christchurch absolutely world-leading in every sense.” Airport’s progressive approach to sustainability.” Andrew Archibald, Investment Director, Solar Bay Rick Hawkins, Division Manager South Island, Worley solarbay.com.au worley.com The combined expertise of Worley, Solar Bay and Christchurch Airport will ensure Kōwhai Park is a world-class renewable energy park.
KŌWHAI PARK | SUSTAINABLY POWERING THE NEXT GENERATION 7 KŌWHAI PARK ECOSYSTEM 2050 Kōwhai Park is a platform for generating green energy at scale. Ideally located next to Transpower and Orion’s network, this energy can be delivered straight to potential customers to help them decarbonise. Christchurch Airport is currently investigating the opportunity to generate green hydrogen onsite in the future. There will be demand for this energy from both existing businesses and future industries, including green data centres and vertical farming. It’s close to New Zealand’s second largest city, the Canterbury Plains are flat and sunny and, as aviation decarbonises, we’ll see greater demand for renewable energy from airlines. This is a solid investment which is why Solar Bay is contributing $100 million to Phase One.” Andrew Archibald Investment Director, Solar Bay
