View this email in your browser Support your local shops and businesses - our festive campaign We’re planning the next phase of our campaign, which will launch in November and run through to the new year, to encourage people to enjoy Christmas and shop safely and locally, while remembering to follow government guidelines. If you know a business which would like to be included, they just need to e-mail us saying they’d like to be included. Please stay safe and shop local When you visit your local shops, to reduce the risk of catching or spreading the virus, you should: Keep your distance and protect yourself and others. Wear a face covering. Be patient if queuing. Stay at home if you’re unwell.

Find mental health support this World Mental Health Day Our mental health affects how we think, feel and act, as well as how we handle stress and make choices. This Saturday, 10 October, is World Mental Health Day, an opportunity to learn about the importance of looking after our mental health and the wide range of support available. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected us all differently, with some of us feeling worried or anxious about finances, health or those close to us, while some may feel isolated and lonely. It’s important to remember there's information, support and services to help you manage your mood and improve your wellbeing: Every Mind Matters is a free online NHS approved tool to discover simple steps to look after your mental health and wellbeing. Wheel of Well-being provides six simple steps you can incorporate into your day to improve your mood and reduce stress. First Steps booklet gives a range of advice, information and self-help techniques to help support emotional and mental wellbeing. Virtual Wellbeing Hub offers a range of sessions and online activities virtually from the comfort of your own home, including virtual coffee mornings and tailored exercise classes. Talking Therapies provides a choice of free NHS services offering the opportunity to talk to a qualified mental health specialist online, by phone or video about problems you may be experiencing, like stress, low mood, anxiety, panic attacks and depression. Our wellbeing advisors, Wellbeing Prescription, are also on hand to support East Surrey residents aged 18 or over, offering free, one to one health and wellbeing support and advice over the phone or by video call, on a range of issues, including mental health.

Make energy improvements to your home and save money Homeowners or residential landlords can apply for a Green Homes Grant voucher to help towards the cost of installing energy efficient improvements to your home. These improvements could include insulating your home to reduce your energy use or installing low carbon heating to lower the amount of carbon dioxide your home produces. The vouchers will cover two thirds of the cost of eligible improvements, up to a maximum government contribution of £5,000. If you, or someone in your household, receive certain benefits you may be eligible for a voucher covering 100% of the cost of the improvements. The maximum value of the voucher is £10,000. More information on the scheme, including details of eligibility, is available. Full time courses available at East Surrey College East Surrey College in Redhill has launched its new full-time course guide for 2021-22, showcasing a wide range of exciting and high quality courses.
The college will be holding a virtual open event on 15 October, from 5:30pm to 8pm, where you can learn more about the courses on offer for 2021-2022. There’s also an opportunity to explore the college from the comfort of your own home, through virtual video tours, live online presentations, bookable one to one meetings with tutors and the chance to find out more about the support services available. For more information on the event, including details of how to register, visit the college’s website. A copy of the full time course guide is also available. Marking Remembrance Sunday this year Due to the current government restrictions, arrangements for marking Remembrance Sunday on 8 November will be different this year. To comply with guidelines on social distancing, we will not be hosting any Remembrance Sunday events on council owned land. Any acts of remembrance will be different, with some churches hosting small services, following COVID-19 guidelines and live streaming their service. The Royal British Legion will not request any road closures this year across Surrey, although arrangements will be made to ensure all wreath laying will be private with no more than six people present. Organisers of private events must carry out a full risk assessment and implement measures to minimise the risk of infection. The two minute silence at 11am will still take place and residents can support this mark of respect on their doorsteps or in their homes. The Royal British Legion’s website includes some resources to help you mark the Act of Remembrance this year.
