Message Notes Lazarus and the Life After Life After Death Text: John 11:1-6, 17-44
Devotion Guide Daily Devotional Guide Lazarus and the Life After Life After Death Verse of the Week: “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me will live even though they die. Everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25-26 CEB) Daily Prayer: Lord, in raising Lazarus from the dead you gave us a foretaste of the resur- rection life you have prepared for us. Help us to live the abundant, eternal life you offer us in the present; life made possible because you have been risen from the dead and destroyed the power of sin and death over us. Amen. Introduction to this week’s Scripture readings: This week’s texts take us into the rest of John 11 and 12 in anticipation of next week’s message on Jesus washing the disciples’ feet. As you read, examine how the raising of Lazarus affected the crowds, the religious leaders, and the disciples. How does belief in the resurrection change your approach to life? Daily Scripture Readings: Monday –John 11:45-53 - The response of the religious leaders Tuesday – John 11:54-12:11 - Preparation for the Passover and Jesus’ burial Wednesday – John 12:12-19 - The triumphal entry Thursday – John 12:20-43 - Who is the Son of Man? Friday – John 12:44-50 - A summary of Jesus’ teaching Saturday – John 13:1-20 - Jesus washes his disciples’ feet Questions for Reflection/Journaling/Discussion: 1. Reflect on this week’s message on the raising of Lazarus. What did you learn? What ques tions did it raise? What challenged you or struck you as important for your life? 2. As you read the Scriptures this week, how are various people responding to Jesus? How would you have responded had you been there? How do you respond to Jesus today? 3. Put together a summary of Jesus’ teaching in John. What is the message Jesus conveys about himself, about God, about humanity, and about creation? Intercessory Prayer Guide: Monday - Pray for those grieving the loss of loved ones. Tuesday - Pray for those facing serious illness. Wednesday - Pray for those concerns listed on the TLUMC prayer list this week. Thursday - Pray for those who may be hostile to Jesus and his offer of new life. Friday - Pray for religious leaders, that they may be wise and follow Jesus instead of opposing him. Saturday - Pray for our worship services on Sunday and for all who will attend. If you would like to receive a list of submitted prayer requests via email please email Cary Diaz at tlumc@tlumc.org
