2 SUMMER PROGRAMME INTRODUCTION For many students, the closed border presents the opportunity to stay in New Zealand over summer for the first time. Study Auckland wants students to make the most of their summer in New Zealand and provides the following information to help schools develop their summer programmes. Auckland Summer Programme The perfect Auckland Summer Programme is a combination of three central elements, providing students with the opportunity to prepare for the future, experience New Zealand and do some good. LEARNING + TRAVELLING + VOLUNTEERING Developing skills and Diving into the people, Finding ways to make a preparing for the future places and culture of New positive difference to New Zealand Zealand • English Language • Courses for NCEA • Day trips • Conservation credits • Auckland attractions • Events • Personal Development • New Zealand tours • Not for profit • Hobby classes Schools may choose to develop and manage their own summer programme or work in collaboration with other schools. The summer programme offered to students may include activities managed by the school(s) and/or experiences or courses provided by external partners. To make it easier for schools to develop their programmes and retain students for the 2021 school year, Study Auckland has sourced a range of learning, travelling and volunteering options available for secondary students over summer. Some operators have supplied fliers to advertise their experiences, which can be found in this Google Drive folder. Bookings • Schools are responsible for making their own bookings and payments directly with education providers, tour operators and volunteer organisations. • All information provided to Study Auckland has been included in this document and the Google Drive folder, meaning additional enquiries will be best made with the supplier. • Schools need to ensure the supplier / operator meets their H&S and Code of Practice requirements. • These options are not exclusively for international students – homestay brothers and sisters or Kiwi friends are welcome to join in.

What’s in this section? This section covers a variety of courses offered by Auckland education providers. Some of the courses are for secondary students only, while others are offered to both tertiary and secondary students. 11 New Horizon College New Horizon College Summer School (English + Activities) An English-language summer programme for international secondary school students, which will run over the holiday period. The focus will be on improving communication and study skills in a fun and supportive environment. An English-language programme for New Zealand secondary school students who are looking to improve their language skills over the summer school-holiday period. The programme will be divided into two separate cohorts. • The first will be for young learners aged approximately 11-14 years and will follow a curriculum and materials that are age appropriate. • The other cohort will be for older secondary school students (15-18 years) or recent school graduates waiting for the new academic year to start. The curriculum will focus more on academic language and study skills. Afternoon activities will form part of both cohorts’ programme. 18 New Zealand School of Art and Fashion www.nzsaf.ac.nz Creative Jewellery Making (Hobby classes) The Creative Jewellery Making hobby course focuses on the use of fundamental skills in jewellery making. Students learn how to make 3 pieces over 10 weeks; the Club ring, the Monogram pendant of the student’s own design and a Rub-Over setting for a pendant or ring. These pieces of jewellery introduces the student to the basic control in the use of the jewellers’ hand- tools, soldering techniques and good workshop practices, including the recovery of precious metals, safe handling of tools and machines in the workshop. This course is an excellent opportunity for anyone passionate in creating jewellery, anyone who is looking to connect with their creative side, or catch-up on a project, or use the workshop resources, and learn the NZSAF way. 26 Talent Solutions Virtual Internship for Secondary Students Talent Solutions is New Zealand’s only dedicated early talent consultancy that works across the Government and Corporate sectors to deliver award-winning attraction, selection and development programmes for graduates, interns and cadets. In July 2020, we partnered with ATEED and the University of Auckland to design and co-ordinate a virtual internship pilot project for International students. This has now been adapted for secondary school students.
