Welcome Dear Community Members, Welcome to College for Kids Summer 2021 at Diablo Valley College. First and foremost, thank you for your continued support and your patience. During these uncertain times, it is a great feeling to have such strong community support. I know that we at Community Education are extremely grateful for each other and the support that we have received from everyone around us. Our department, in collaboration with state and local health departments has followed and implemented Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) considerations to protect students, teachers, administrators, and staff to prevent slow the spread of COVID-19. We are going continuing to take all the necessary precautions and measures to ensure the safety of our community. Unless directions change, ALL students, staff, and visitors observe to wear a mask, keep social distancing, and proper hand washing. More information and details will be provided on the various ways we will be implement COVID protocols. I encourage parents and families to go to our website college4kids and click on the informative links. General Information For all policies and procedures, visit us at www.dvc.edu/ college4kids. Please review all policies online prior to registering your child. Our site can be translated via Google Translate into a number of languages for your convenience. The College for Kids (CFK) program serves students entering grades 4-9 in the fall. We design our curricula to meet the needs of the general student population. Student/Parent Orientation: Due to Covid-19, we will be offering the orientation via Zoom June 3rd 5pm-6:15 pm. Both parents and students must pre-register through our registration system. There is no cost for orientation. Registration opens April 19th, 2021. If you are unable to attend , the orientation will be recorded and available to view prior to start of CFK. Parents are still encouraged to visit and tour the campus where their child will be attending prior to the first day of class. Please walk your child through the drop-off/pick-up procedures, how to get to each of their classes, the location of the nearest restrooms to their classrooms and where our office is located – L-146 at Pleasant Hill and E-225 area in hall at San Ramon (this is where the San Ramon CFK Coordinator will be stationed). Please be advised: Diablo Valley College has partnered with County Health in the distribution of Covid-19 Vaccine. Please be aware that the buildings BFL (Business and Foreign Language) & H (Humanities) are being used as a vaccination site. Please try to avoid 2021 College for Kids 3
parking lot 7. NO college for Kids classes are schedule in these buildings. Planning Your Child’s Summer: When reviewing the class details and planning your child’s summer with us, please make note of the dates, days, times, locations and fees listed. Our schedule format has changed from last summer. You may sign your child up for one, two or three classes each session, but classes must be consecutively scheduled – no breaks between classes. There is no supervision for students outside of class time. Students are not escorted to classes, restrooms, water fountains or to/from the parking lots. Instructors are required to use the “buddy system” when children need to leave the classroom for restroom or water breaks. Classroom staff will record absences for our office’s records. Please notify our office if your child will be late, absent, or picked up early. Our office will not contact families regarding any absences or late arrivals. Scholarships are available for qualifying students. More information and applications are available at www.dvc.edu/ college4kids. Refund Policy Families who wish to drop a class for a full refund must do so no less than close of business day 7 days prior to the start date of the class. For example, a class that starts on June 15, must be dropped by close of business day on June 8. No partial refunds are given. Please allow 2 – 4 weeks to receive a refund, depending on payment method. 4 www.dvc.edu/collegeforkids
Transportation, Parking & Locations: Parents are entirely responsible for students' transportation. Student Drop Off: Pleasant Hill Campus – 321 Golf Club Road, Pleasant Hill, CA 94523. Lots 1 & 3 Drop off and pick up will occur by parking zones divided alphabetically by last name at the Pleasant Hill Campus. Staff members will be at these lots before and after each period to ensure the safety of every student as they arrive and depart. Please keep in mind that College for Kids staff will not be at other parking lots. Please do not make arrangements with your child to be dropped off or picked up anywhere else on campus. We have coordinated with Police Services to allow a drive-thru procedure for parking lots. But, please be aware the drive-thru option is very time-consuming. It’s recommended that parents park and walk their children to the sidewalk where CFK staff are located. It is not required that you park your car in lots 1 or 3. For the safety of kids and other pedestrians, please follow the directions from CFK staff and DVC Police to avoid injury or citations. Kids will be in the parking lots getting to and from class and they can be difficult to see from behind the wheel of your car. Parking Permits are not required. If DVC Police Services cites you for any reason, it is your responsibility alone, to resolve it. San Ramon Campus – 1690 Watermill Road, San Ramon, CA 94582 The drop off and pick up location will be at the front of campus. Please keep in mind that College for Kids does not supervise students who are dropped off and/or picked up on the San Ramon campus. Pick up Policy: Parents are expected to pick up their children within 15 minutes after their last class. Pleasant Hill campus students who are left unattended will be escorted to Police Services in LOT 1 for pick up. Please call Campus Police at 925-969-2785 if you will arrive significantly late after 4:25p.m. San Ramon campus students will remain with the CFK campus coordinator and will communicate with parents regarding pick up arrangements. Pleasant Hill: If your child’s last class for that day will be 1st or 2nd period, they will need to be signed out from our office – L-146. No one is permitted to pick-up children from the classroom for safety reasons. San Ramon: If there is an unexpected emergency which will delay pick up, please call the College for Kids office at (925) 969-4600. College for Kids will contact the San Ramon campus CFK coordinator to notify your child and provide alternate instructions for pick up. How to Register: REGISTRATION BEGINS April 19th •Online registration conveniently available 24/7. Families can set up accounts and register all children at the same time! To view instructions on how to set up an online registration account and to register, visit our website at: www.dvc.edu/college4kids. We highly recommend that you set up your family account before registration begins. A credit card is required for online registrations in order to complete registrations. Aspiring 3-D modelers will learn the basic vocabulary for 3-D modeling, going from basic shapes to rendered images of their designs. Students will also learn the step-by-step process of how to 3-D print, setting up their models, and finally, seeing their models in real life! Students will be in teams of three, and each member has a specific job; a forensic scientist, news journalist, and detective. The teams will be given a case and asked to solve the case. Within their investigation, the team will have to work together to analyze clues and evidence and interrogate suspects and witnesses, within the parameters of the law, then write an informational article that gives the logistics and the solution to the case that was under investigation. Session 1 Spanish (Intro) This fun, interactive course is filled with diverse, multimedia language activities. Students begin their introduction to Spanish by focusing on the four key areas of foreign language study: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Session 1 Filmmakers: Digital Editing* Discover the exciting world of digital filmmaking! Students will learn what filmmaking is and how to analyze films by watching short films and learn how to make their own through editing. Learn the basics of framing, angles, camera motion, and editing with sound. Students will learn editing theory and how to cut for different emotions. Students will also be taught how to record room tone and voiceover to have the perfect sound for editing. Build skills of teamwork and creative development so that you can make films with your friends or on your own. Session 1 From a Drawing to Digital Art Ever wonder what Digital Art is? A digital art class is where you learn what technology and software tools can be used to create magazine covers, edit and adjust photos, drawings, pictures, and many more things! This class will cover the basics of drawing within various computer programs (for example; adobe photoshop and illustrator) as well as converting traditional works of art into digital works of art. The instructor will work with you, while reviewing your photos and helping you improve. Learn the basic functions of your camera so you can begin to shoot in manual mode, capturing higher-quality images of the people and places around you. Session 1 Music Production Become a music producer in this fun, creative and technical class! You will use Digital Audio Workstations like Pro Tools, Cubase, Ableton, Reason and techniques used in the music industry to create your own music.You will compose and arrange sounds/instruments to create pieces of music that fit your unique style. Music production is an area of music that provides students complete creative control. This class will be mainly student-led with some lessons and guidance from the instructor. Session 2 Journalism Rocks!* Would you like to be a writer for a newspaper or magazine or learn how to publish your own content online? Learn how to be a reporter, writer, copy editor, page designer and photographer for your own print newspaper and online paper with a local writer and publisher. In two weeks, you and a team of fellow journalists will become published writers, write various articles on, your choice of sports, art, fashion, “man-on-the-street”, film reviews, etc. You will take photos, learn how to interview subjects, create and print your own magazine. *Note that this class runs for two periods.
