The IU Department of Theatre + Dance acknowledges and honors the Indigenous communities native to this region, and recognizes that Indiana University Bloomington is built on Indigenous homelands and resources. We recognize the myaamiaki, Lënape, Bodwéwadmik, and saawanwa people as past, present, and future caretakers of this land. We also acknowledge that this University would not exist if it wasn’t for the free, enslaved labor of Black people. We honor the legacy of the African diaspora and Black life, knowledge, and skills, stolen due to violence and white supremacy. LIVE PERFORMANCE The mission of the Department of Theatre, Drama, and Contemporary Dance is to advance the art, scholarship, and appreciation of theatre and dance and its place in society. We pursue this mission collectively and as individuals through theatrical productions, scholarship and publication, presentation of our work in national and international venues, formal instruction, and individual mentoring. The Department of Theatre, Drama, and Contemporary Dance is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre and is a member of the University/Resident Theatre Association and United States Institute for Theatre Technology. Dramaturg’s note Life is not a dream. Careful! Careful! Careful! We fall down the stairs in order to eat the moist earth or we climb to the knife edge of the snow with the voices of the dead dahlias. But forgetfulness does not exist, dreams do not exist; flesh exists. —Federico García Lorca, from City That Does Not Sleep Sueño is José Rivera’s adaptation of the well-known Golden Age play La vida es sueño by the Spanish dramatist Pedro Calderón de la Barca. Spain’s Golden Age fostered the growth of art and literature like never before, with the development of Spanish drama being led primarily by the prolific playwright and poet Lope de Vega. Calderón de la Barca continued the work of developing Spanish Baroque drama, ultimately creating over twenty-one collective works of drama and opera across the 17th century. The Golden Age brings with it a cultural dichotomy: the rise of Humanism in art as well as the Spanish Inquisition. How can an arts movement bustling with a deep appreciation for humanity coexist with a rampage against individuals that do not subscribe to the national religion? Perhaps this contradiction reflects the flaws and vulnerabilities of human nature that have caused atrocities throughout history. Calderón de la Barca’s original work poses ontological questions central to the nature of being by imagining sleep as a space where notions of reality, fantasy, and possibility collide. What can be known from traversing such treacherous terrain? From analyzing the stars, or a dream, or a nightmare? Who do we become when we are in close proximity to power? If life is a dream, who is the Dreamer? Nearly four-hundred years later, these questions still challenge us to consider the instincts, emotional responses, and subsequent lines of inquiry that arise in response to such questions through artistic exploration.
