Onstream home (/onstream/) / Onstream highlights 28 March 2019 Star team of Brookes staff volunteers and Jeremy Irons raise over £30,000 for Restore Restore is a local mental health charity, based on Manzil Way in East Oxford, helping people who face mental health challenges to live more fulfilling lives. One in six adults across Oxfordshire suffers from a mental disorder and Restore supports 10% of people referred by Oxfordshire service providers. A record-breaking £30,397 was raised at Restore’s ‘Auction of Promises’ which was hosted by Hollywood icon, Jeremy Irons on 28 February at St Hugh’s College, Oxford. The ‘Auction of Promises’ is Restore’s fundraising event of the year, offering more than 50 auction lots for sale which were generously donated by local people and businesses. The event was co-organised by Trisha Andrew (Strategic Analytics Developer within the Directorate of Strategic Change and Planning) and supported on the evening by a star team of Brookes staff volunteers (pictured) — Sue Chaudhuri (Insight Analyst - Management Information), Martina Adamcikova (Student Communications Officer) and Úna McBreen (Social and Digital Media Manager*). Over 130 guests attended the unforgettable evening where they enjoyed canapés made by Restore’s patron, celebrity chef Sophie Grigson, and piano music performed by Massimo Nicolosi. Sue said: “My experience at the auction has left me with a sense of deep satisfaction from having worked for a great cause. Meeting Jeremy Irons and watching him work his magic on the smitten crowd was surreal!” Mr Irons commented: "We had a great time with some fabulous lots, and we raised money for an extraordinary organisation which helps people to garden, to bake, to do carpentry, to mix with other people, and retrain to take up a job and hold it down. Restore is a remarkable organisation.” This year, Restore was chosen by Oxford Brookes as one of four charities to benefit from the National Student Survey (NSS). For every Brookes student who completes the NSS, the University will make a £3 donation and all donations will be shared equally among the charities. Trisha is a Trustee of Restore and expressed her thanks for Brookes’ support, saying: “For years mental health has been underfunded. We need to feel emotionally supported and comfortable in order to flourish. Restore changes lives. We bear witness to this almost every day. And every penny counts. Over the past year, Restore’s collection boxes in the Colonnade store alone raised over £800.” Restore also received recognition for its services as the winner of The Oxford Times Charity and Community Award held at Oxford Brookes this year. If you are interested in volunteering, check out our new Brookes' staff volunteering policy (https://www.brookes.ac.uk/staff/staff- experience/volunteering/). It can provide up to three days additional annual leave for you to volunteer during working hours. Current volunteer initiatives include creating 'well- being and wildlife' gardens across campuses and team-building days supporting local charities. *Úna left Brookes on 8 March after over two and a half years as Social and Digital Media Manager. Her replacement is Diana Mackie. Latest on the official opening by Jon Snow of Clerici, Sinclair and Sir Kenneth Wheare Hall Next week our former Chancellor Jon Snow will officially open the recently redeveloped Clerici and Sinclair buildings and Sir Kenneth Wheare Hall on Headington Campus.
The opening reception and ceremony will take place on Friday 5 April from 11.00-11.45am in the Sir Kenneth Wheare Hall. Members of staff, students and the local community will join members of the Wheare and Clerici family to celebrate the recently redeveloped buildings. The ceremony will be followed by an in-conversation event with Jon Snow and Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dean of the Business School Chris Blackburn, providing an opportunity to ask Jon questions after his discussion with Chris. The winners of the ballot that was run in January (https://intranet.brookes.ac.uk/onstream/2019/jan/jon-snow-to-officially- open-clerici,-sinclair-and-sir-kenneth-wheare-hall/?type=roundup) will attend lunch at Brookes Restaurant with Jon Snow, Chancellor Dame Katherine Grainger, Vice-Chancellor Professor Alistair Fitt, and other members of the Vice-Chancellor’s Group. Staff, Students and local residents spring into step to create a Wildlife and Wellbeing garden at Swindon Campus. Erika Garratt, a second year Operating Department Practice student at Swindon Campus, with the help of funding from alumni through the Student Impact Fund, has created a wildlife and wellbeing garden for all staff, students, local residents and the wildlife to enjoy. Erika explained why she launched the project: “Being a healthcare student is quite stressful and is different to being a regular degree student, we have to be on placement a lot. I thought it would be nice to have an area to relax in and also beneficial for the wildlife in the area.” On Saturday 23 March, Erika and a group of student, staff and local resident volunteers helped to start work on the garden and by lunchtime it was really taking shape. The garden will be an area filled with wildflower and sensory plants, habitats for wildlife with bug and bird boxes as well as a hedgehog house (see image below). Visitors will be encouraged to use the garden, which encompasses a picnic area, to relax and unwind from their teaching and studies. Volunteers who helped out on Saturday commented: “A little peace amongst the working environment for all to enjoy,” said Marilyn, local resident. “It would be nice for volunteers to come and work in the garden to maintain it. There is great satisfaction in seeing it take shape, it will look beautiful - such a worthwhile project,” said Caroline Robertson, site coordinator, Swindon Campus. Get involved The new staff volunteering policy (https://www.brookes.ac.uk/staff/staff- experience/volunteering/) allows you to apply for one day of paid leave for volunteering activities.

Questioning the givens of academic writing across the disciplines. Thursday, 07 March 2019
What is academic writing? In this symposium we undertake a transdisciplinary stance to examining the tightly regulated practices of disciplinary writing. So doing, we will shed light on some of the hidden dynamics and tensions within. Our intention is to position academic writing as an object of inquiry from different methodological and epistemological perspectives such that alternative theoretical and pedagogical approaches to this central aspect of both student and educator everyday life might be facilitated. Whilst this will be a one-off event, we intend it to be the first step in building a research community focused on exploring different approaches to theorising and teaching writing in and across the disciplines. Starting at 10 am and finishing at 3.30 pm, the day will include: · two transdisciplinary panels on theorising and teaching writing in and across the disciplines · workshop sessions to spark ideas, dialogue and collaboration · morning coffee and lunch Venue: JHB 303, Oxford Brookes University, Headington Campus, OX3 0BP For all queries contact: Juliet Henderson jhenderson@brookes.ac.uk Questioning the givens of academic writing across the disciplines.
