Dear Spartans, To travel is to seek out and explore; whether you’re mushing your own dog team in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan or seeing the shores of the eastern Mediterranean, you will discover something new as you take the journey. The MSU Alumni Office is pleased to offer you the opportunity to continue your education while traveling the world. We have a number of wonderful travel tours that will allow you to access different cultures and beautiful scenery. From our ever-popular Oceania cruises, Hill Towns of Italy, the Dutch Waterways, our affordable tours for younger alumni, or a tour of Kenya with superlative wildlife viewing, we believe we have something you will enjoy. MEET THE HOST Tina Zhuang Tina Zhuang currently holds a position in the MSU Alumni Office as an accountant. Born in China, Tina speaks and writes Chinese fluently. She is the mother of a 17-year- old girl who attends Okemos High School, and her husband, Dr. Hui Li, is a professor of Environmental and Soil Chemistry in the College of Agriculture & Natural Resources at Michigan State University. MEET THE HOST Dr. Alan Prather Alan Prather (Ph.D., University of Texas, ‘95) joined MSU’s faculty in 1997 and is an associate professor and director of the MSU Herbarium in the Department of Plant Biology. He studies plant systematics, the evolution of pollination systems and the evolution of chromosome duplications. He has described several new species in the Phlox and Mint families and has traveled through many of the mountainous regions of Central and South America in search of more. He is an experienced guide and has hosted four previous Spartan Pathways tours. Table of Contents 15

MEET THE HOST Dr. Daniel Hayes Daniel Hayes is a professor in MSU’s Department of Fisheries and Wildlife as part of the Partnership for Ecosystem Research and Management. Some of his current research projects include a study of the effects of a rock ramp structure on fish in Chesaning, the effects of dams in general on fish habitat and populations and limitations imposed on fish reproduction by zooplankton. He chairs Bath Township’s Park Lake Advisory Board, where he is personally invested in finding cost-effective ways of improving the management of our lake and fishery resources. Dr. Pamela Rasmussen Pamela Rasmussen is an ornithologist specializing in Asian birds, and is lead author of Birds of South Asia: the Ripley Guide. She has authored or co-authored the scientific discoveries of 11 new species of birds; serves on the American Ornithological Society’s North American Check-list Committee; manages the online bird vocalization database AVoCet; and edits ornithological papers for the journal Zootaxa. MEET THE HOST Tim Potter Tim Potter manages the MSU Bikes Service Center at Michigan State University, an on-campus operation owned by MSU since 2006. He oversees a host of bike- related services, programs and initiatives, making MSU a silver-level Bicycle Friendly University. Tim has worked as a bike tour guide, mechanic, interpreter and driver in Japan for Americans and for Japanese cyclists in the Canadian Rockies, along with hosting MSU Alumni Office bike tours in California and Northern Michigan wine country. MEET THE HOST Dr. Brian Nielsen Dr. Nielsen is a professor of equine exercise physiology in the Department of Animal Science at Michigan State University. He completed his undergraduate degree in animal science at the University of Wisconsin–River Falls and he earned both his M.S. and Ph.D. from Texas A&M.
