A message from the Headmaster… Millfield is proudly diverse and that diversity has been in the very DNA of the school since its foundation by Boss Meyer. Similarly, cricket has been at the forefront of the offer at Millfield School since its beginnings and it is, at this stage, as bright as it has ever been. Of course, a sports tour is an opportunity to develop skills, teamwork and self-confidence but more than that, it is an opportunity to explore other cultures and environments. There will be cultural visits to the Apartheid Museum, National Parliament building and Government House. There will be game drives, plenty of fun and, of course, the sport. Each team has six matches against four different schools and two provincial sides. I look forward to hearing the results and the stories. A message from the Director of Sport... Sporting statistics tell us that the hardest thing to do in sport is to win when playing away. There are so many factors that explain why this is the case and the vast majority are related to what goes on above the neck. This is why we use tours as part of a development process through sport. International touring through sport is a unique challenge for any developing pupil and for the supervising staff. We do not tour for a good holiday with a like-minded peer group. We use tours because they provide an opportunity that challenges individuals in a very different way from being in the school environment. It provides a unique opportunity to understand how well people learn, adapt and progress over an intensive and immersive fixed time period. We know any tour brings fresh competitive technical and tactical challenges with different conditions, cultures and traditions on the pitch. Depending on the tour location, there are different challenges to consider with travel, sleep, nutrition / hydration and temperature / humidity which are all critical to sustaining health. The more interesting challenges often come from what happens off pitch. When you move from an intensive education environment at Millfield with one ratio of academic, sporting and other co-curricular activities to a completely different one dominated by sport, it is different. Of course, the tour organisers ensure there is a balance of time in sport and cultural learning, but the intensive focus around a series of sporting fixtures throws up an interesting agenda. Literally, everything you encounter is different and needs a willingness to engage – whether food, language, rituals, behaviours – and it is all focused around training and competitive opportunities. The intensity and time spent with your peers will seem different to being in the boarding house and school.
The ability to adapt, at pace, to all of these factors is a key marker of how well individuals learn and cope but also helps recalibrate an individual’s standing and perspective of themselves in a completely different context. The deliberate planning from the coaching team that goes into creating these opportunities should never go unseen. They ensure that the high support needed, alongside the high challenge, provides rewarding experiences that see individuals grow in many unpredictable ways. As a department, we will always look to support and encourage the value in touring when opportunities exist because it is not something that we can replicate in a school setting. Enjoy the experience. Dr. Scott Drawer
A message from the Director of Cricket... What an incredible opportunity for the players and staff at Millfield School to tour one of the world’s most competitive, yet respectful and hospitable, cricketing nations. At the end of my school years in the early 1990’s (I know what you are saying, Garas can’t be that old!) I headed to South Africa to play cricket. I learnt more over those five South African seasons than I did at any other stage of my playing career. The friendships and comraderies that were developed when playing cricket for Worcester United CC and then Hermanus CC in the Boland Premier League still remain strong today. South African cricketers are ultra-competitive. They make each batter work in- credibly hard for every run, their bowlers toil for every wicket and make their opponents work their socks off to win any game. South African sides never know when they are beaten and fight to the end. This is a fantastic value that I have taken into my coaching career and hope that most of the teams who I have worked with have displayed those “fighting” tendencies. Millfield Cricket will need to draw upon these values against tough opposition over the course of the tour. I very much look forward to connecting with many old friends and former oppo- nents during our stay in South Africa and will encourage that the pupils also develop similar relations with their opposition players & hosts. I have been fortunate to work alongside some fantastic South African cricketing legends over the course of my career to date. The most prominent is the Proteas greatest ever leader, Graeme “Biff” Smith.
I first met a very young “Biff” Smith whilst coaching at Hampshire County Cricket Club in 2001. The then 19 year old had travelled to Hampshire with his mentor, Jimmy Cook, who was Hampshire’s Head Coach at the time. I was running the Academy and Board Development XI’s at the time. Graeme scored a few runs in the Board Development XI. It would be fair to say that Graeme’s quality as a young man and leader outshone his quality with the bat over the 2000 season, yet Jimmy Cook always told me that this bloke was destined for greatness. How right he was. Graeme made his debut for the “Proteas” less than two years later and was soon catapulted into the role of Captain at the tender age of 22. “Biff” returned to the UK with his South African side and promptly made double centuries in his 3 rd and 4th Test Matches as captain. I was offered the Somerset CCC Head Coach position in October 2004. My first phone call was to Graeme Smith where I asked him to be my captain for the 2005 season. His impact upon the County Ground at Taunton was far bigger than mine that’s for sure! We had a very good Captain/ Coach relationship. Not bad for a youthful pairing, with him being only 24 at the time and I was 31. Over the course of three magical months Graeme took his youthful Somerset side to T20 Finals day and then was MOM in the T20 Final itself against a Lancashire team, which included Freddie Flintoff, Andrew Symonds, Jimmy Anderson, Dominic Cork, Stuart Law and Glen Chapple in their ranks. Thirteen years later and “King Biff” is championed every time he walks into the County Ground at Taunton.
Since 2005, I have been lucky enough to work alongside some fantastic International Captains such as Michael Vaughan, Paul Collingwood and Andrew Strauss, who all had incredible qualities which drove their respective sides, Ashes and World T20 Cup success. But I have yet to witness a more inspirational leader than Graeme Smith. His man management, his empathy with others, his strength when defending his team mates and his skill in reading people and changing rooms was remarkable. He supported these skills with being one of the most mentally tough cricketers to ever play the game. For many, the most iconic image of Graeme Smith comes when he walked out to bat, at No. 11, looking to survive 8.2 overs with a broken hand and a broken elbow, to face a desperate Australian attack containing the fastest bowler in the world, Mitchell Johnson. This was back in 2009. Smith got within 10 balls of saving the game, before a Johnson thunderbolt hit a 5th day crack, cut in like a leg-break and shattered into the stumps at 90mph. Smith had played without painkillers, with a remodelled glove on his injured hand and his own blood recently injected into his right elbow. He had to be helped into his batting equipment and shoes by fast bowler, Morne Morkel. His left arm and hand were smashed to bits in the 1st innings of the game by repeated blows on a cracked SCG batting surface. "I just decided to give it my best shot," he said. "If I got a first-baller, at least I tried, that was what was going through my head. There was a lot of pain, I'd just had injections in my elbow and this hand is obviously was not being very friendly but I was grateful I never got another knock on either part of my body." Every Australian player, led by captain Ricky Ponting, recognised the amazing bravery and leadership that Graeme had shown on that day. They all congratulated him on his efforts and clapped him off the field. Up until that time, Graeme Smith had been a marked man in Australia, taking all kinds of stick from the hostile crowds. Since that day, he is welcomed wherever he goes in Australia and now commentates on both radio and TV when he is in the country.
I admire and respect so many South African sportsmen but for me, Graeme Smith is the number 1. I am lucky enough to call him a friend and I will never forget the way that he transformed a young group of cricketers into a Title winning side with his incredible leadership back in 2005. If the Millfield cricketers on this trip can harness some of Graeme’s mental toughness, humility, empathy, competitiveness and sense of fun as they play their cricket and embrace the culture, then they will land back in the UK as better cricketers but more importantly, better human beings for the experience. If you are one of the players and are wondering where you will find these wonderful attributes. then have a look across at your opposite number in each of the teams that you face and there will be some “Biff”-like attributes staring straight back at you. His influence on South African cricket is immense, far-reaching and long-lasting. Breathe it in fellas, breathe it in. A massive thank you to all of the parents who have supported the pupils to make this tour a reality. Your fundraising endeavours have also helped to raise a fantastic figure for the Neil Goodman Trust, the Millfield Cricket Tour’s charity partner. It is so good to see as many of you travelling with us to sample all the wonderful hospitality that South Africa has to offer. You will never forget your time in the country, it is an amazing place.
Thanks also to Steph at GBTOURS who has been a magnificent partner for this trip and organised every small detail to make these 11 days as impactful as possible. Thank you to our wonderful player profile sponsors and advertisers who are featured later in the brochure. We look forward to hosting you at Millfield on Sponsors Day in the summer term. Your collective support for Millfield Cricket and the players is massively appreciated. Lastly, a huge thank you to all of our hosts and opponents. We are looking forward to the challenge of playing cricket in South Africa, the different pitches, the highly skilled players and the hot climate. We embrace the competition that you will give us and hope to foster relationships that will flourish for a long time to come. Kind regards

A message from a cricket OM... “To succeed by grinding” Sri Lanka and South Africa were the two tours I was fortunate enough to go on during my time at Millfield. It is with hindsight – some 17 years of it – that allows me to fully appreciate the benefits of touring at an early age. I was exposed to a wildly different culture throughout our trip to Sri Lanka. It certainly was an ‘eye opening’ experience. Personally, I had enormous amounts of admiration for the way my cricketing peers, in the sub-continent, enjoyed their cricket. Furthermore, I was in awe of their hunger for self-improvement. These two observations were valuable lessons for me, and they resonate as strongly today. However, the main success of the tour at the time was, I believe I was one of the only guys to come back without having contracted the dreaded ‘Delhi Belly”! Funny how you measured success back then! The South Africa trip was a totally different experience. Steaks the size of your heads for the boys and washed down with bucket loads of red wine for the adults! The cricket was tough…South Africans are fierce competitors and it awakened me to ‘proper’ competition. I played my first day/night game in coloured kit out there, which was incredible. Craig Kieswetter was playing for the opposition in that game. Little did I know I would be playing with him for Somerset - some 12 years later.
My personal experiences of touring with Millfield will live with me forever. I have toured India a few times and it is an amazing country. If you have not been before then you are in for a shock! My advice would be to embrace it, love it and make sure you really experience it. Cricket is the reason for going, and you will learn a lot about how other cricketers play and train. However, the value for going lies much deeper than the cricket. Be a sponge. Immerse yourself in the culture and meet new people. I promise you, you will come back with a new perspective about the grind other people have to put in – Molire Molendo. James Hildreth (Shapwick, 98-03)

THE NEIL GOODMAN TRUST The “Neil Goodman Trust” has been Millfield Cricket’s charity partner throughout 2018. Over the past 12 months the Millfield Cricket Community (Millfield School, Old Millfieldian Cricket Club, parents, pupils and staff) have raised funds for the Trust in a variety of ways: Cake Sales Charity Auction Charity Braai Fundraising Dinner NGT 6-a-side https://www.justgiving.com/ crowdfunding/omcc Grand Raffle
Back in 2017, Neil's innings was tragically cut short at the age of 34 by bowel cancer. Neil has been described by a contemporary as "one of the most talented all-round sportsmen to have passed through Millfield’s gates, as well as being an incredibly humble and caring human being". Neil captained the Millfield Cricket 1st XI in 2001 and featured strongly in the Football teams during his time at the school. The Old Millfieldian Cricket Club in particular will remember one of its founding players by continual fundraising to help support Neil's daughter Allegra and promote bowel cancer awareness in young adults. The Neil Goodman Trust 6-a-side day will become an annual event. The inaugural event was held on the Main Ground at Millfield in July 2018.
Nick Brothers, captain of the OMCC recently said “Neil will be forever with us when we take to the field in any Old Millfieldian Cricket Club fixture. Neil’s memory has inspired us all to bigger and better achievements in the matches since his passing”. The OMCC have recently been promoted into the prestigious Cricketer Cup competition after winning the Cricketer Trophy 3 times in the past four years. A fitting tribute to an outstanding Millfield Cricketer. Mark Garaway, Director of Cricket at Millfield School wishes to thank everyone for their tireless effort and support in the fundraising effort over the past 12 months. Nick Brothers and Mark Garaway will be handing over a considerable cheque to the Trust Patrons on behalf of Millfield Cricket in the new year.
STAFF PROFILES Name: Mr. Mark Garaway Role at Millfield: Director of Cricket Best memory of touring: Winning the Commonwealth Bank ODI Competition vs Australia and New Zealand. Message to the players: Take full advantage of the training facilities (pitches, tracks, gyms) at the High Performance Centre in Pretoria, enjoy the match opportunities that you will have against strong South African teams, embrace every learning opportunity on our amazing excursions and come back a better person and cricketer for the experience. Tour aims: I’m intrigued to see how our players adapt to match play against opposition who are half-way through their competitive season given the fact that we have been practicing against tennis balls and in alternative coaching spaces for the past three months. I hope that we will adapt quickly and players will not use our present facility challenges as a crutch for underperformance. “On behalf of Nicky Grant & Associates I want to wish the Millfield tour to South Africa the greatest success”
@_MFcricket_ Name: Mr. Jack Birtwhistle Role at Millfield: Teacher of English (i/c Year 9); Millfield House Assistant Housemaster; U15A hockey coach; U14/15B cricket coach Best memory of touring: While the sport you go out to play is obviously key, my best memories from touring are all inspired by what happened off the pitch, as tours are great at bringing squads closer together. Message to the players: Experiences like this don’t come around too often, (well outside of Millfield anyway) so live in the moment and take advantage of every opportunity you are given to learn and develop, both as a player and perhaps more importantly, as a person. Tour aims: To take full advantage of the opportunity to visit an amazing country for the first time and learn as much as I can. “The Win clinic want to wish Jack and the Millfield team an enjoyable tour of South Africa”
STAFF PROFILES Name: Mr. Aaron Ryan Role at Millfield: Lead Physiotherapist Best memory of touring: Getting the opportunity to see the Taj Mahal on the 2014 cricket tour to India. It was an amazing cultural experience and shows the added value a sports tour can bring the pupils and staff. Message to the players: Embrace the cultural experience a tour to South Africa can bring. You will see and learn things that may affect your perspective of the world and the freedoms we take for granted. South Africa has a rich and often painful history but you will also be able to see the good that can be achieved in the face of adversity. Tour aims: Ensure pupils have fun and enjoy the experience of tour. "We're incredibly proud to be supporting Aaron and the Millfield Cricket Tour through the donation of our tape to Aaron and the physio team. One of the major challenges Aaron faces is keeping the players injury-free and in condition to play at their best. Hopefully having access to our tape will aid him in achieving this throughout the tour."
@_MFcricket_ Name: Mr. Jack Moore Role at Millfield: Perfromance Coach Best memory of touring: This is only my second tour, my first being two years ago when we went to Mumbai. Of which the best memory has to be walking through the Oval Maidan with literally hundreds of people playing cricket on so many different pitches with all games overlapping all using whatever equipment they could, it was brilliant to watch and experience. The group even got to do some volunteer coaching for a local school and we played one of our fixtures there as well. An experience I will never forget! Message to the players: Take every opportunity that comes your way to learn and develop as players and individuals. But most importantly ENJOY IT! Tour aims: To learn and experience as much as possible about cricket and the culture/way of life in a country I have never been to. It will also be a fantastic opportunity to get to know the players which I have not necessarily coached up until now, so to get to know the group on and off the pitch will be great leading in the schools 2019 season. Away from the cricket I am buzzing for the game drive at the end of the tour, it’sone of those opportunities that don’t come around very often, I can’t wait! "On behalf of Alter Image we wish Jack and all the Millfield touring party a wonderful trip to South Africa. Hit your catches high, fill the players with confidence and eat all the meat you can!"
STAFF PROFILES Name: Mr. Daniel Helesfay Role at Millfield: Performance Coach Best memory of touring: Turning up to a ground to play in our fourth game of our tour, with the previous three washed out with rain. Sunny skies, but waterlogged pitches, so the groundsmen set fire to the outfield to get a game in! Message to the players: You get out what you put in! Get stuck in, embrace the experience from start to finish and learn as much as you can! Tour aims: Get to know our new pupils of Millfield, embrace the culture and diversity of South Africa and foster the opportunity for learning to take place. "On behalf of Oak Designs we hope Dan and the Millfield touring party have an enjoyable trip to South Africa. Enjoy the red meat, the cricket and the culture whilst your there!"
