SOIL & SITE ASSESSMENT FOR ONSITE WASTEWATER DISPOSAL ON 65 RAPLEYS LOOP ROAD, WEROMBI NSW 1. INTRODUCTION This Site and Soil Assessment for On-site Wastewater was prepared by Harris Environmental Consulting at the request of Belle Lifestyle Australia Pty. It relates to a proposed 2-bedroom granny flat to be constructed adjacent to the existing 4-bedroom residence. The existing AWTS servicing the 4-bedroom residence has sufficient capacity for the additional wastewater from the granny flat. A new spray irrigation area is proposed in this report. Fieldwork was undertaken by a representative of Harris Environmental Consulting (HEC) on 13th September 2020. This plan is based on the primary investigation of the soils, topography and hydrology of the site observed on the day of inspection. Soil samples and photos of the site were taken for further analysis. This Soil and Site Assessment for On-Site Wastewater Management has been prepared in accordance with: Wollondilly Shire Council’s DCP for On-Site Sewage Management and Greywater Re-Use, (May 2011). Compliant with Category 1 as more than 1500m2 is available for effluent disposal Local Government Act 1993; Australian Standard AS/NZS 3500 Plumbing and Drainage 2018; Environment and Health Protection Guidelines (1998) On-site Sewage Management; for Single Households (Department of Local Government); AS/NZ 1547:2012 On-site wastewater management (Standards Australia, 2012). SOIL & SITE ASSESSMENT FOR ONSITE WASTEWATER DISPOSAL ON 65 RAPLEYS LOOP ROAD, WEROMBI NSW 5. SUMMARY OF SOIL AND SITE CONSTRAINTS There are no significant soil or site constraints that would prevent the continued use of the existing Aerated Wastewater Treatment System (AWTS) for wastewater treatment and new spray irrigation for treated wastewater disposal. This is to service the 4-bedroom existing dwelling and the proposed 2-bedroom granny flat. The land proposed for spray irrigation is a grassed area with suitable exposure, soils and slope. This location is compliant with the buffers and setback distances required by Wollondilly Council. This includes being more than 15m from dwellings, 40m from drainage depressions, 100m from permanent watercourses, 3m if the area is down-gradient from property boundaries/driveways and 6m if the area is upgradient from property boundaries and driveways. In accordance with the Wollondilly Shire Council, 1500m2 of land suitable for spray irrigation has been identified. The proposed irrigation is 584m2 which leaves the remaining 916m2 as a reserve area. SOIL & SITE ASSESSMENT FOR ONSITE WASTEWATER DISPOSAL ON 65 RAPLEYS LOOP ROAD, WEROMBI NSW 6. SYSTEM DESIGN 6.1 WASTEWATER TREATMENT SYSTEM The existing Aerated Wastewater Treatment System will be used to treat wastewater from the existing 4-bedroom residence and proposed 2-bedroom granny flat. The domestic AWTS has the capacity to treat 1500L/d, whereas the design wastewater load is 1200L/d. Photo 4 Existing AWTS 6.2 PIPES The sewer pipes between the plumbing amenities, treatment system and effluent disposal area must conform with 'AS/NZS 3500(Set):2018 Plumbing and Drainage Set' specifying the nominal pipe sizes and respective minimum grades. Table 1 contains these specifications. In addition, where a sewer carrying untreated wastewater to a treatment system is longer than 60 metres, the minimum grade should be doubled, and inspection ports should be installed at least every 30 metres or at an angle or change of grade. The sewer pipes between the plumbing amenities, AWTS and irrigation area must be buried at a depth that provides protection against mechanical damage or deformation, in accordance with 'AS/NZS 3500.2:2018 Plumbing and Drainage Set'. Table 2 shows the minimum pipe depth for trafficable areas. Note that the distribution pipe will need to cross the road. SOIL & SITE ASSESSMENT FOR ONSITE WASTEWATER DISPOSAL ON 65 RAPLEYS LOOP ROAD, WEROMBI NSW 7. REQUIRED IRRIGATION AREA The irrigation area needed to manage 1200L/day of wastewater load was calculated using monthly water and nutrient balance, following the method described in DLG (1998). Soil texture classification for Design Irrigation Rate is from ASNZ1547(2012). The water balance requires a 380m2 irrigation area based on the following variables: Camden (Brownlow Hill) median monthly rainfall; Badgerys Creek monthly average evaporation; and Application rate of 24.0mm/week or 3.5mm/day for clay loam subsoil found at a depth of 500mm. The nitrogen balance requires a 548m2 irrigation area based on the following variables: AWTS will reduce Total Nitrogen to 30mg/L; and Vegetative rate for managed pastures is assumed to be 240kg/N/ha/year The phosphorus balance requires a 584m2 irrigation area based on the following variables: AWTS will reduce Total Phosphorus to 12mg/L; P-sorption of 400mg/kg for clay loam subsoil; Bulk density of 1.5g/cm2 for intermediate soils; Soil depth of 0.5m. Crop uptake is assumed to be 30kg/ha/annum; and 50-year design life of system. The largest of the three methods (most limiting) is required. For this site, the largest area of the three methods is 584m2. 8. LOCATION AND METHOD OF IRRIGATION 584m2 of spray irrigation is proposed for the existing dwelling and proposed granny flat. Five quick coupling turf valves are connected to the buried distribution line so fixed access points are available for the connection of a moveable hose and sprinkler. See Appendix- Site Plan Sheet 1-3 for further information. Harrisenvironmental.com.au OCTOBER 16, Tel: (02) 4236 0954 2020 E: Info@harrisenvironmental.com.au ref 3995WW page | 12
