City of inspiration:
Oxford is home to several museums, including the Ashmolean, world famous for its art and
archaeology. Another must-see is the University Museum of Natural History, which started life
as the university’s centre for scientific study but is now open to the public. You can get up
close to thousands of rocks, minerals, fossils and zoological exhibits.
Truly unmissable is the amazing Pitt Rivers Museum, where you’ll find Japanese masks, Tahitian
mourning clothes, Inuit parkas, African pottery, Hawaiian feather cloaks… The list goes on, and
it’s a fascinating collection, well worth a visit.

The delights of County Durham
A day in the city itself is not to be missed. Durham Castle has wonderful collections of fine art, arms and
armour, and the cathedral (pictured above) is bathed in history and home to the shrine of St Cuthbert.
In the North Pennines, near the pretty town of Middleton in Teesdale ,you’ll find the impressive High Force
waterfall. The River Tees has been pouring into this gorge for thousands of years but the surrounding
rocks are even older and date back over 300 million years.
About half an hour’s drive from High Force is the medieval Raby Castle, built by the powerful Nevill family
in the 14th century and surrounded by a beautiful 200-acre deer park.

Things to do in and around Barnstaple
The town is still very much as it was in medieval times. The pedestrian streets and alleys of the town
centre are brimming with old landmarks like almshouses, a Norman castle mound and a quayside
merchant’s hall, all of which you’ll find on the Barnstaple Heritage Trail. You can find out everything
you need to know about the area’s history at the superb Barnstaple and North Devon Museum, which
is right next to the medieval Long Bridge over the River Taw.
Don’t miss the historic Pannier Market and Butchers’ Row, where you can find all sorts of stalls, cafés and
delicatessens. Peruse the local crafts, pick up some Devon produce and enjoy some excellent street food
as you explore the ancient streets.

Do more in Derbyshire
Take a trip out to the Derwent Valley Mills on the River Derwent, the only World Heritage Site in the East
Midlands. The site contains fascinating mill complexes, the watercourses that powered them and the
settlements developed around them for the workers. The Derwent Valley Heritage Way passes through
the valley’s beautiful and historic landscapes – explore on foot or on a cycling tour.
Crich Tramway Village, with more than 60 trams built between 1873 and 1982, is a real journey back in
time. Many of the buildings in the village have been rescued from elsewhere in the UK – the Red Lion Pub,
for example, came all the way from Stoke and was rebuilt on site, brick by brick.
With a wide range of attractions, historic sites to explore, country walks and outstanding local food and
drink, don’t miss out on this opportunity for the full Derbyshire experience.

No stay in County Durham would be complete without a visit to the city centre. Explore the museum and
gallery spaces of Durham Castle and, if you have a head for heights, a climb to the top of the cathedral’s
central tower will reward you with spectacular views across the city and the surrounding countryside.
For a taste of Durham back in the day, head to Beamish and the open-air museum, which tells the story
of life in the North East through the ages. Discover what life was like on the home front during the First
World War and explore the 1940s farm. Motoring enthusiasts will want to take a ride on a historic Daimler

Taking a punt on Cambridge
Avoid the stress and cost of city driving and parking with the local park-and-ride service. The nearest
parking site is at Madingley, just six miles from the hotel, and you can park for up to 18 hours.
Cambridge itself has a multitude of famous colleges and attractions worthy of your attention, including
King’s College (pictured above), the Fitzwilliam Museum and the Royal Botanical Gardens – 40 acres of
gorgeous green space owned by the university. Swot up on your horticultural knowledge or just take in
the wonders of this arcadian paradise at your leisure.
The best way to see the city is, of course, from the River Cam. Try your hand in a punt or perhaps take a
chauffeured punting tour – just sit back, relax and avoid any risk of taking a splash!
How about a ride over to Newmarket, where you can visit the National Horse Racing Museum? Also under
an hour’s drive away is the splendid Audley End. Built in the 17th century, it’s one of the country’s greatest
Jacobean houses and was used as a secret-agent training centre during the Second World War.
If you choose to add an additional night to your stay, don’t miss out on a trip to the Imperial War Museum
at Duxford, Europe’s largest aviation museum. There are several permanent displays, including one
devoted to the Battle of Britain, where you can see original Hurricanes, a Spitfire and a Messerschmitt.
