APPEAL for SIH 2019 Invitation to Private and Public Sector Industries and NGOs to join Smart India Hackathon (SIH) 2019 • Share 3 – 5 problem statements per organization • Get them solved by technology students across India
SIH 2019 – Quick Snapshot • An initiative by Ministry of HRD, AICTE, Persistent Systems Ltd, i4C and Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini • World’s biggest Software and Hardware hackathon • 3rd edition of highly successful Smart India Hackathon initiative. Just like its prequel, SIH 2019 will have 2 sub- editions – Software edition (a 36-hour software product development competition) and Hardware edition (a 5 days long hardware product development competition) • Will involve 1 Lakh+ students, 3000+ institutions, 200+ organizations from across India • Students from IISc, IITs, NITs and AICTE/UGC approved institutions will compete to creatively solve problems and offer technical solutions • Opportunity for students to showcase their talent by providing world class solutions for challenges faced within the private sector organizations • Opportunity for Private sector to hire the best minds from across the nation
How SIH 2018 was different from SIH 2017? • SIH 2018 introduced problem statements from State Governments in addition to Union Ministries • The initiative also for the first time announced a special Hardware edition along with the Software edition
Outstanding solutions under Hardware edition: i. Theme – Drones & Robotics Team name – BVPSIHS Summary: The speech to sign language (ASL) conversion arm is a hardware linked implementation of speech recognition and speech to text conversion of a voice input. The team has tried to design the architecture of the ASL electronic arm in such a way so as to optimize the available resources (Finances and time). Due to these constraints, the project is limited to the ASL conversion of alphabets, numbers and some common words that can be expressed using a single hand and no expressions. The entire project is divided into three major parts: Input, speech to text conversion, and finally the output end.
Outstanding solutions under Hardware edition: ii. Theme – Smart Vehicles Team Name – Vidyut Summary: Team Vidyut has developed a POC of instant retrofitting kit for passenger auto rickshaws operated by petrol. The intended end customer is the auto rickshaw driver. The kit comprises of a gearbox adapter mount with a custom pinion arrangement, an off-the-shelf BLDC motor with the controller, a battery pack, a driver console with central controller and a passenger information cum safety system. The present POC is tested and found to be feasible for the intended use cases.
Outstanding solutions under Software edition: i. Ministry – Ministry of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation Team name – KillerKode Summary: : Collection on information on ‘harkhetkopani’. This problem can be solved by creating an Android application. The application will include a questionnaire regarding the quality and quantity of sources of water available in the respective area. The application will thus enable the farmers (who are the basic data providers) to easily enter this data about every farmland in their local language. The farmers will be given the facility to update the irrigation details about their farmlands time to time. The farmers will be verified through online Aadhar card number authentication. The data hence collected can be further analyzed through a web application which will facilitate the Irrigation Department and other Water Management Authorities in identifying the areas needing immediate irrigation help to ensure ‘harkhetkopani’.
Outstanding solutions under Software edition: ii. Ministry – Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs Team Name – ADONIS Summary: : SMART TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT. Within the scope of Digital India the concept of SMART cities have been promulgated by govt. of India. A SMART city requires SMART traffic management system to avoid traffic congestion and to reduce CO2 emissions from vehicles stuck in traffic jams. Prime objectives of the proposed solution would be to avoid traffic congestion, reduce fuel wastage, reduce CO2 emissions, provide priority passage for emergency vehicles. The workflow of the proposed solution suggests detection of the number of vehicles using image processing at all roads on an intersection. subsequently we would calculate the stopping time according to the number of vehicles using inbuilt algorithms. The estimated stopping time would be communicated to adjacent intersection for required calibration and calculation of vehicle stopping time through cloud enabled setup.
Project Proposals for Implementation • Total number of Ministries that have agreed as of Aug 20, 2018 = 5 • Awaiting confirmations from remaining 20+ Ministries • Total number of winners for Software edition = 200+ • Total proposals received from winners of Software edition = 70+ • Total number of winners for Hardware edition = 30+ • Total proposals received from winners of Hardware edition = 20+

Solutions ready for deployment –Examples: 1. Team Name: Pegasus College: International Institute of Information Technology Ministry / Department: Department of Defence Production Summary: Application development of social Media content classification using desired keywords. The classified data set shall be further processed using sentiment analysis. Many applications ranging from patient management to crime detection can utilize this tool for sentiment analysis and further upgraded to predict personality traits. Team Name: Hacker Troops 2. College: Rajalakshmi Engineering College Ministry / Department: Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) Summary: The developed application is to track the file in a centralized repository in an organization in a encrypted format using the coke format and making it impossible to tamper.
