PRAYER OF THE DAY All-powerful God, in Jesus Christ you turned death into life and defeat into victory. Increase our faith and trust in him, that we may triumph over all evil in the strength of the same Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. 6
WORD CHILDREN’S SONG Rise and Shine (aka. Arky Arky) Rise and shine and give God the glory, glory. (x3) Children of the Lord. CHILDREN’S MESSAGE Pastor Kathleen Armstrong FIRST READING 2 Corinthians 4: 13 - 5:1 A reading from 2 Corinthians. But just as we have the same spirit of faith that is in accordance with scripture - “I believed, and so I spoke” —we also believe, and so we speak, because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus, and will bring us with you into his presence. Yes, everything is for your sake, so that grace, as it extends to more and more people, may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God. So we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day. For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure, because we look not at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen; for what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal. For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. God speaks to us in many ways. You reach out to us in your spoken word. 7
PSALM Psalm 130 A reading from Psalm 130. Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord. Lord, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications! If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with you, so that you may be revered. I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than those who watch for the morning, more than those who watch for the morning. O Israel, hope in the Lord! For with the Lord there is steadfast love, and with him is great power to redeem. It is he who will redeem Israel from all its iniquities. God speaks to us in many ways. You reach out to us in your spoken word. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION 8
GOSPEL LESSON Mark 3: 20-35 The Gospel according to St. Mark, the 3rd chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. and the crowd came together again, so that they could not even eat. When his family heard it, they went out to restrain him, for people were saying, “He has gone out of his mind.” And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, “He has Beelzebul, and by the ruler of the demons he casts out demons.” And he called them to him, and spoke to them in parables, “How can Satan cast out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but his end has come. But no one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his property without first tying up the strong man; then indeed the house can be plundered. “Truly I tell you, people will be forgiven for their sins and whatever blasphemies they utter; but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit can never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin”— for they had said, “He has an unclean spirit.” Then his mother and his brothers came; and standing outside, they sent to him and called him. A crowd was sitting around him; and they said to him, “Your mother and your brothers and sisters are outside, asking for you.” And he replied, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” And looking at those who sat around him, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.” The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON Pastor Kathleen Armstrong 9
HYMN OF THE DAY O God of Every Nation 10
SACRAMENT OF HOLY BAPTISM Jonah Lee Fletcher & Madelyn Irene Fletcher, twins of Mark & Kimberly Fletcher. Introduction God, who is rich in mercy and love, gives us a new birth into a living hope through the sacrament of baptism. By water and the Word God delivers us from sin and death and raises us to new life in Jesus Christ. We are united with all the baptized in the one body of Christ, anointed with the gift of the Holy Spirit, and joined in God’s mission for the life of the world. Presentation Called by the Holy Spirit, trusting in the grace and love of God, do you as parents and sponsors desire to have Jonah Lee & Madelyn Irene baptized into Christ? Response: I do. As you bring Jonah Lee & Madelyn Irene to receive the gift of baptism, you are entrusted with responsibilities: to live with them among God’s faithful people, bring them to the word of God and the holy supper, teach them the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments, place in their hands the holy scriptures, and nurture them in faith and prayer, so that they may learn to trust God, proclaim Christ through word and deed, care for others and the world God made, and work for justice and peace. Mark and Kimberly, do you promise to help Jonah & Madelyn grow in the Christian faith and life? Response: I do. Haven, do you promise to nurture Jonah & Madelyn in the Christian faith as you are empowered by God’s Spirit, and to help them live in the covenant of baptism and in communion with the church? Response: I do. People of God, do you promise to support Jonah and Madelyn and pray for them in their new life in Christ? Congregation: We do. Profession of Faith I ask you to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the faith of the church. Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God, the powers of this world that rebel against God, and the ways of sin that draw you from God? Response: I renounce them. 11
Parents, Sponsors and People of God, do you believe in God the Father? Congregation: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? Congregation: I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father; and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? Congregation: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen. Thanksgiving The Lord be with you. Congregation: And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. Congregation: It is right to give our thanks and praise. We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took delight. Through the waters of the flood you delivered Noah and his family, and through the sea you led your people Israel from slavery into freedom. At the river your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy Spirit. By the baptism of Jesus’ death and resurrection you set us free from the power of sin and death and raise us up to live in you. 12
Pour out your Holy Spirit, the power of your living Word, that those who are washed in the waters of baptism may be given new life. To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Congregation: Amen. Baptism Jonah Lee / Madelyn Irene, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Laying on of Hands Let us pray. We give you thanks, O God, that through water and the Holy Spirit you give your daughters and sons new birth, cleanse them from sin, and raise them to eternal life. Sustain Jonah Lee / Madelyn Irene with the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever. Amen. Signing with the Cross Jonah Lee / Madelyn Irene, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever. Amen. Presentation of Candle and Faith Chest Jesus said, I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will have the light of life. Welcome Let us welcome the newly baptized: 13
