A warm story about friendship and migration from the incomparable Jean
                                     Little.

Jane and Maya are very different. Maya is a quiet girl and a refugee, new to this
country, while chatty and outgoing Jane has lived in the same place her whole life.
The girls become instant friends. When they learn about endangered species in
school, they decide to do their own small part to help by supporting migrating
                                     monarch butterflies.

Together they plant a milkweed garden to feed and shelter the tiny creatures,
9781443170918 then watch in amazement as a monarch hatches and grows before leaving on the
long journey to Mexico. After all the butterflies have departed, Maya shares her
English own migration story — her family’s long journey to Canada. Maya wishes the
9.5 x 9.5 in monarchs safety in their new home too.

           Excerpt from Eight Days:
The call came in at 5:23 am. Carl woke me up and told me and then couldn’t say much else.
He gets like that. He’s not a talker at the best of times.
“Later,” he said, “I promise, later. Please Samantha, later.” He went to the kitchen and I went
back to the pullout bed. That was hours ago.
           It was official.
His daughter, my mother, was dead. She died at 11:20 pm last night.
There will be an autopsy, an inquiry, depending.
           My mother is dead.
I don’t know what to do. How to be. What to say.
           I don’t understand.
           Everything is upside down.
None of it makes any sense.
I thought my Mama died ten years ago.
