A NOTE FROM MIKE BOLDT: If you were to ask me to choose any author whose work I would want to illustrate, Robert Munsch would be the first on my list. After all, my own love of reading and telling stories was shaped by The Paper Bag Princess, Mortimer, Mud Puddle and countless other Munsch stories. When I first started working in publishing, friends and family would ask me, “When are you going to work on a Munsch book?”—as if it were an option. I would explain that it was something I could only dream of doing. So when I received an email from Scholastic inquiring about my availability to illustrate a story by Robert Munsch, I had to read and re-read the email at least half a dozen times. Even now, it’s surreal for me to think that this actually happened. It has been one of my greatest privileges to illustrate a book by one of my heroes. SPRING 2018 2 s cholastic.c a

A NOTE FROM PHIL LESNIE: I love children’s books for many reasons, but at the apex of those reasons is their ability to help young people imagine what the lives of others might be like. Imagination is the engine of empathy, and if I believe that children’s books can effect social change in any small way, it is in this. That they can model kindness, that they can widen a world view that other systems seek to shrink, and in that widening call on us to deploy that kindness. I think Phil’s writing is some of the kindest being written for children, and I’m obscenely proud to have been allowed to help illuminate some of it. SPRING 2018 12 s cholastic.c a

Dear Reader, As I began writing The Journey of Little Charlie, I thought I’d be telling the story of a young man of African descent as he was captured in Canada by an American slave catcher, but the story had other ideas. It was waylaid by Photo Credit: Daniel Syphax Harris Little Charlie Bobo, the son of a white sharecropper from South Carolina, who finds himself accompanying that same slave catcher north, in pursuit of “stolen property” that he soon discovers are other human beings. The US Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 required African Americans, even those living in “free” states, to provide documentation, upon request, demonstrating that they were not escaped slaves. One of the many consequences of this law was a migration of both free people of African origin and those escaping slavery beyond the US border, into Canada, where they received protection under Canadian law and were welcomed with open arms in communities such as Buxton, Ontario. As I listen to the radio and read the news today, I hear echoes of those events 167 years ago, stories full of fear-fueled dramatic escapes with swaddled babies and crying children and ice-covered fields – stories of people seeking freedom. As a student of history, I believe this is the most important thing writers can do in addition to entertaining our readers, we can also point out that those who don’t remember the past, or choose to ignore it, are condemned to live it again and again.
