Programme includes works from Rossini, Brahms, Poulenc, Mozart, Paul Reade and Bernstein. George Todica, piano Wed 1 May Romanian pianist George Todica has won over 20 1st Prizes in national and international competitions including the Stefano Marizza Competition in Trieste, and 2nd Prize at the 2016 International Piano Campus Competition in Pontoise, France. Programme includes Mozart, Chopin, Ravel and Rachmaninov. Solem Quartet Thu 6 Jun Winner of the 2014 Royal Over-Seas League Ensemble Competition, the quartet enjoys a busy concert schedule and has performed in the Wigmore Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall and Bridgewater Hall as well as in the BBC Proms Extra, broadcast live on BBC Radio 3. Programme includes Schumann, Britten and Beethoven. A Sense of Science Sat 18 May to Fri 31 May Check our listings for event timings and ticket prices. Delve into the science of the human brain in a series of events and activities inspired by our Extreme Imagination exhibition. Untangle optical illusions and brain teaser puzzles or take a sensory journey through RAMM’s collections. Refugee Week 16 to 23 Jun Home Sweet Home – in the cafe, 28 May to 23 Jun – features diverse Exeter residents in photos and stories celebrating the personal belongings and customs we use to welcome people. Refugee Week closes with a family-friendly day (Sat 22 Jun) of Syrian drumming, Arabic writing, a book corner and a close-up view of henna decorations.
Exhibition: 10 Apr to 23 Jun Welcome spring with a celebration of mosaics and be entranced by the play of light on gold, coloured glass and marble. This retrospective exhibition celebrates 40 years of mosaic art by this remarkable artist. This exhibition brings together over 30 luminous mosaics to chart the experiences, places and beliefs that have inspired Elaine M Goodwin’s work. “My work is about light. Exhibition: 30 Mar to 2 Jun When you daydream, Extreme Imagination: inside the mind’s eye explores remember, or think of these questions through the varied work of 22 artists. Exhibition: Until 9 Jun Sometimes the galleries are closed for special events; please check before travelling Shining a spotlight on women artists in RAMM’s fine art collection, this exhibition features works from the 1770s until 2011. Included are works by the suffragette artist Olive Wharry and Victorian children’s book illustrator Kate Greenaway. There are also works by Barbara Hepworth, Gillian Ayres, Mary Martin, Dame Laura Knight, Primrose Pitman, Judith Ackland and Lucy Kemp- Welch amongst others. Exhibition: 11 to 30 June 18 Jun to 15 Mar 2020 DevonLive Talented art groups from across Devon compete by making artwork inspired by this year’s theme of migration. The winning group’s work will be on display.
Displays Sam Boughton’s Devon 5 Mar to 26 May The Cafe at RAMM See Devon through the eyes of local artist Sam Boughton. She combines painting, collage, ink splatters, bold brushwork and delicate pastel marks to convey a sense of place and time. From windswept wild grasses on Dartmoor to rusty boats and whitewashed coastal houses, Sam evokes the textures and colours of Devon in this series of original works and prints. Works for sale through the Shop. What Do You Collect? Detectorists 9 Apr to 7 Jul Finders Keepers? gallery This metal-detecting group’s hobby and love of history has brought them a mixed bag of treasure including the valuable, the surprising and the mundane. You can see some of their favourite finds here. MD Finds Group are based in East Devon. An open group, they allow others to share their knowledge and finds through their database, the Portable Antiquities Scheme, and now here in RAMM. Czigane by Bik Van der Pol 30 Apr to 5 May Courtyard. 30 Apr to 16 Jun Cafe The RAMM collection houses the remains of Czigane, a sledge dog that went on Scott’s 1910-1913 expedition to the South Pole. The meteorological records from this expedition are important for today’s climate research. Taking these data as a point of departure, artists Bik Van der Pol’s video work unfolds the relationship between objects, touch and global trade. Commissioned by Exeter Culture with support from the Met Office, St David’s C of E Primary School and RAMM. New artwork by Preston Street Union (PSU) From May Preston Street Union (PSU), an Exeter-based group of artists, use social, collaborative processes to create participatory and performative artwork. Working with curators at RAMM, PSU will develop two new art commissions inspired by RAMM’s 2019 theme ‘migration’ and its rich collections. The first commission will take place outside the museum in Exeter’s city centre in May. Look out for further details online.
Event highlights Revealing Light: annual Drecki Lecture by Elaine M Goodwin Wed 10 Apr. Doors 6pm, talk 6.30pm £9 Elaine M Goodwin uses the mosaic materials of ancient Byzantium, Greece and Rome to create works of light. A student of Exeter College of Art and Design, the internationally acclaimed artist and author moved her studio from Exeter to Burgundy in 2016. In association with the South West Academy. RAMM Lates Fri 10 May. 6.30 to 10pm £5 Delight in an after-hours night of exploration and entertainment. An evening to expand your mind and stimulate your senses, it will include performances and music, engaging talks and hands-on activities and the chance to delve further into our exhibitions and stunning collections. Or simply sit back and relax with friends over a drink or a bite to eat. Make a Mosaic: Adult Workshop Sat 15 Jun. 10am to 4pm £40 Learn how to make a colourful mosaic with local artist Michelle Greenwood- Brown. You will create your own piece of artwork to take home with you. All materials provided.

Use scanners with the help of the East Devon Metal Detecting Club. Record your finds with the Portable Antiquities Scheme and enjoy looking at objects found buried in Devon. Step inside your brain Fri 31 May One-hour sessions start at 10.30am, 11.30am ,1.30pm and 2.30pm £4 (accompanying adults need a ticket) Enter the Explorer Dome, an acclaimed, interactive science show, to experience a kaleidoscope of sights and sounds to thrill your senses and find out what goes on inside your brain.
