Buongiorno and Welcome to Kaleidoscope Presents: Restoring Hope We are so honored to spend this evening with you, highlighting the deserving and inspiring families whose lives you have already greatly impacted, and raising much-needed funds to continue the important work of Rocky Mountain Children’s Health Foundation. Thank you for joining us! So that you will see and feel the incredible power of your generosity, this evening’s program incorporates stories and faces of a few of the families who have benefited from the programs of RMCHF. Kaleidoscope Presents: Restoring Hope is crucial in raising funds for the families we serve each year. Because of you, children like Leana, Lillian, Luca and thousands more received critical support and resources, when and how they needed it most. During an extremely challenging year, your support has helped restore hope for families in need. For more than 11 years, Rocky Mountain Children’s Health Foundation has provided flexible and immediate support to countless families, each with significant and often unique needs, through our four programs: Mothers’ Milk Bank, Patient & Family Assistance, The Stink Bug Project and Best Start Program. The reality of each child’s illness, injury or birth condition is never the same, nor are the varying challenges and needs of the family that is trying to focus on the well-being of their child while keeping the greater wellness of their entire family intact. A special thanks to our Board of Directors and sponsors, who personally invited many of you to join us this evening, for their support of this special event. As members of the Board of Directors and committed major sponsors, we are honored to be your Chairs for Kaleidoscope Presents: Restoring Hope. On behalf of the entire RMCHF Board of Directors, the staff and especially the kids and families touched by your generosity, we thank you for being a part of this remarkable event. Enjoy a very memorable evening of luxury and inspiration. Restoring Hope Donor human milk helped Lillian grow strong in the NICU After a long infertility journey, Ashley and Jeffrey were over the moon to learn they were pregnant with a baby girl. This wasn't the end of their struggles though. Ashley had trouble retaining the pregancy and carrying to term. She worried she might lose this precious rainbow baby. On February 16, 2020, Ashley gave birth via emergency c-section at 35 weeks and 4 days to baby Lillian. Lillian weighed only 3 lbs 14 oz, extremely low for a baby of that gestational age. Due to Lillian's small size, she spent eight days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit where she was fed pasteurized donor human milk from Mothers' Milk Bank to help her grow and thrive. The milk Lillian received not only provided her tiny body with vital nutirients she needed, but it also gave Ashley and Jeffrey the peace of mind that their baby girl was receiving the very best food in those first precious moments of life. Ashley was especially blown away by the generous gifts of milk donors and knew she wanted to return the favor if her supply allowed. Once Ashley was able to establish a milk supply for Lillian, she began pumping for donation. She is now a milk donor with Mothers' Milk Bank and lovingly gives countless babies the same opportunity that Lillian was afforded, to grow and thrive with the help of donor human milk. 5
Gas cards eased the burden for the Campos family A few summers ago, Leana Campos noticed that something was wrong. She was experiencing swelling all over her body and thought she might be having an allergic reaction. Her family took her to the hospital where the doctors took a biopsy of her kidney. This led to a diagnosis of C3 glomerulonephritis and nephrotic syndrome, a kidney disease that Leana will have for the rest of her life. Today, Leana is a 16-year-old girl with a positive attitude and a strong sense of ownership over her treatment plan. She lives in Colorado Springs at Fort Carson with her siblings, mom, and dad, who is an active duty military member. Leana receives several invasive treatments from Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children in Denver every Monday. These trips can take anywhere from two to three hours each way. In addition to time spent, those gas bills also started to add up. Rocky Mountain Children's Health Foundation stepped in and will continue to provide the Campos family with gas cards to fuel these life-saving trips to Denver for the treatment Leana needs. With support from the Patient and Family Assistance Program, the Campos' know they are not alone in their journey to Leana's remission. 6
A furry friend helped Luca through an extra challenging year Luca is an easy going 8-year-old who was born with Bilateral Cleft Lip and Palate, a birth condition he happens to share with his dad. Luca has been forced to overcome more obstacles than a typical kid his age. After enduring six surgeries, and with two more scheduled in the coming year, Luca has grown accustomed to doctor visits and procedures. A liquid diet and restrictive activities have been a challenge for this rambunctious kid. Despite his dad continually reassuring him that having a cleft lip is a special thing, Luca asked for a dog for extra support for surgery recoveries and to bring some additional joy into his family’s life. Luca and his family found comfort when The Stink Bug Project matched them with Scruffy, a loving poodle/terrier mix. Scruffy immediately formed a special bond with Luca. Through countless hospital stays, procedures, and surgeries, Scruffy has been the perfect companion for Luca, and a blessing for the entire family. Thanks to the Stink Bug Project, Luca has a newfound sense of confidence and independence as he teaches Scruffy commands and tricks. Although Luca has active medical concerns, life with his furry best friend has definitely improved. 7
