Through this, we will continue our work to elevate and enhance the profession with a commitment to design excellence and quality of the built environment. It would also allow me the unique opportunity to engage and hear from practi- tioners from a number of firm sizes and understand ways that we can better advocate for them to make sure they have successful businesses. It would provide me the honor to engage with and represent the chapter’s architects and young professionals and engage with members of the community that share the same hopes and dreams for the profession and built environment. By working alongside and learning from others I see this as a way to help carry the torch for the profession and make sure the next generation benefits from the experiences of the past so that the profession can keep progressing and continue to be a leader around discussions of Sustainability, Resiliency, Climate Change, and Equitable Practices.”
2021 AIA-RI Board of Directors Directory Frank Mruk, FAIA Secretary (2021-2022) Rhode Island has been my home since 2012 and I feel I can offer much to the rich culture and legacy already in place. Prior to this point I have been mostly focusing my efforts on London, NY and Boston. Now it is time to focus on RI a place my family loves so much. I can offer much business and strategy experience. After my undergraduate degree at Pratt Institute, I obtained an MBA and began working on Wall Street for AIG and Morgan Stanley as a project manager, strategic planning manag- er and Chief of Staff. I had the opportunity to work directly with the CEO on numerous initiatives. I managed a 3.1 Million square foot (AIG) and 2.5 Million square foot (Morgan Stanley) portfolio of international projects with budgets of well over $100 Million-dollars. It was during these years that I honed my leadership, communication, and consensus building sensibilities, and learned how to scale up organizations. At AIG, I oversaw the design department and worked directly with the CEO and senior executive team during a time of rapid growth. Over a 10-year period, the company evolved from a small/medium player into one of the largest financial services companies in the world. My work establishing one of the first archibus/aperture-based enterprise resource planning systems resulted in my transitioning from a senior project manage- ment role to a senior strategy role in the corporation. I further honed my strategy knowledge at Oxford University’s Said Business School where I was updated on the current methodologies of approaching Strategy and Innovation from a top tier business school perspective. I am cur- rently a certified Strategic Management Professional (SMP) and a peer re- viewer for the Strategic Management Society. I coauthored the (ASP) Asso- ciation for Strategic Planning’s ‘Strategic Planning Professional (SPP)’ and ‘Strategic Management Professional (SMP)’ certification exams and served as President of the ASP New York Chapter. I was awarded one of ASP’s I’ve ‘Registered Education Providers (REPs)’ positions. I also coauthored an exam preparation guide and lecture frequently on strategic performance & innova- tion. I have been elected to the Association for Strategic Planning National Board and am one of 5 principle authors of the “guide to the ASP Strategic Management and Strategic Planning Body of Knowledge 2.0” which was published in 2015. In recognition of these accomplishments I am honored to have been elevated to Fellowship in the Strategic Planning Society. I believe the next generation of Architects is so critically important to the future of the profession. An an educator, I have taught a diverse realm of students at the Smart Building Center, the Building Owners and Managers Institute, the Rhode Island School of Design (GS10kSB), the School of Visual Arts, New York University, Parsons – the New School, Roger Williams University and at the New York Institute of Technology School of Architecture and Design where I also served as the Associate Dean. I believe the profession is at a pivot point, emerging professionals must redefine the future.

Prior to Ryan’s return to Vision 3 in 2018, Ryan worked as a senior manager and owner’s rep- resentative in the facilities management divisions of large public sector and private higher education institutions. Ryan leverages his experience on both sides of the table to bring a collaborative and team-oriented spirit to every project. 2021 AIA-RI Board of Directors Directory Linda Penaloza, Assoc. AIA Director (2021-2022) Linda has been an Architectural Designer at Vision 3 Architects since 2019. Linda is involved with the Design Awards Committee and Emerging Profes- sionals Committee. She also participated in the 2020 Task Force Initiative which focused on topics relating to the Black Lives Matter Movement. Linda is originally from Cucuta, Colombia and migrated to Miami, Florida at the age of seven. She graduated from Miami Dade College (MDC) with an As- sociates of Arts degree and transferred to Roger Williams University (RWU) to complete her Bachelor of Architecture, and finally her Master of Architecture degree. Once at RWU, Linda was influential in developing a connection be- tween MDC and RWU that provides a pathway for a diverse group of students to earn their Bachelor Degree in the Architectural Program. During her final semester, she received an Award for her architectural the- sis which focused on improving Fisherman housing, commercial activity, and tourism in Honda, Tolima, Colombia which is prone to flooding. Her love for experiencing and learning about different cultures led her to study abroad in Barcelona, Spain for a semester. Previously, Linda received the Norton Salk Memorial Scholarship for Design Excellence from AIA Rhode Island. Outside of the office, Linda enjoys spending time with friends and experienc- ing the outdoors with her fiancé and her mini Goldendoodle (Louie). --- I am interested in serving on the AIA Rhode Island Board of Directors because I want to be involved in changes made for current and future generations. To me, architecture is not a typical 9 to 5 job, it is an instrument through which problems are solved in both society and the built environment. I also believe that learning from others through community involvement is imperative in order to become a better person and professional. As a Hispanic female in the LGBTQIA+ community being influential and having my voice be heard will stand as an example for younger generations. Through the leadership skills I have developed, I will strive to shape policies that will uphold inclusivity, equity, and diversity within our chapter. Placing these ideals at the forefront will better our profession and communities.
2021 AIA-RI Board of Directors Directory Hector Rios, AIA Director (2021-2022) Mr. Rios started his career as an architectural draftsman for George Pearson Architects in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. Under his tutelage Mr. Pearson en- courage Mr. Rios to obtain his architectural degree at an accredited institution. Roger Williams University Architectural program provided a unique learning environment as well as the opportunity to work for some local offices during summer internships. He joined Urban Design Group in Providence, Rhode Island in 1992. He was involved in a variety of small residential and commercial projects. In 1996, he left to gain greater exposure with large scale projects by working for one of the largest architectural firms in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Consequently, he worked on several commercial developments including the Providence Mall complex in Providence, RI and a number of institutional projects throughout the East Coast. In 2002, he rejoined Urban Design Group to address new mar- kets in small to medium size commissions in Rhode Island. Has participated in a wide range of urban planning and building types, in- cluding projects involving downtown revitalization, retail, hospitality, and pri- vate sector office development. He brings to Urban Design Group a strong background in project execution, code compliance issues, coordination, and delivery in order to meet project goals. He is noted for his practical empha- sis on establishing a strong working relationship among the various project participants to satisfy client needs and budget constraints. In 2006 Studio Rios Architecture LLC was formed with the purpose of providing individualize attention to the growing market of sustainable architecture and green design. The goal is to provide a dedicated service to individuals interested in one-on- one attention to their needs. --- Currently, there is a void in the local AIA chapter with regards to sole-practi- tioner participation. A large number of architects are sitting on the sidelines because their needs are not addressed at a small firm level. I would like to help change that situation.
2021 AIA-RI Board of Directors Directory Eric Schall, AIA Young Architect Director (2021-2022) My name is Eric Schall and I am currently a Project Manager with ZDS and live in Rumford, RI. Before joining ZDS, I lived in New Jersey and worked at Rice + Brown Architects, focusing on high end residential and beach front properties. After moving to Rhode Island, I took a role at LLB Architects in Pawtucket during school and after graduation for a couple years, to work on higher education, dor- mitories, and public sports complexes. In my role with ZDS, I contribute to the firm’s growth, work on projects at all phases and mentor staff on design/docu- mentation programs. Leading the technology and programs at our office, I teach Revit classes and coordinate upgrades. I quickly transitioned from assisting to leading projects, and have been a key part of the firm’s success as part of the firm development team. I work on a variety of adaptive reuse and tax credit rehabilitation, with some win- ning multiple awards. I am passionate about the firm’s hospitality and commercial projects and work in both our Providence and DC office. Outside of work, I live to ski in the winter and beach in the summer. Growing up I participated and taught karate for over 12 years, which I earned my third degree black belt. Now I am into more leisure, less harsh contact, sports like golf and tennis. Next steps for me would include expanding and growing my management abilities, help ZDS evolve in both Providence and DC, and get more involved in my local and architectural community. While attending Roger Williams University’s undergraduate and graduate pro- gram, I was very active in the AIAS and served as Vice President from 2010-2013. I loved going to the national Forum event each year in a different city, coordinating educational + non-educational events for my classmates and being a part of a group with similar interests. After school, I quickly focused on my career in RI and getting licensed in summer of 2019. Now, that I am settling in as an architect in Rhode Island, I have started to branch out and expand my work life. I have attend- ed many events including the green RI, awards night, CEU events and my favorite – the golf outing. I would like to get more involved in the events I enjoy going to. I love to plan events and fun activities. In 2019, I attended 12 weddings and was in 9 of them, and yes that was crazy. All 9 weddings that I was in the wedding party, I was the one that planned the bachelor party, shower and the go-to organized person on the big day. It was a big responsibility, but I thrived at curating an event towards a specific thing, was glad to be depended on and enjoy the process and end result. I have always taken my competitive, OCD driven energy in anything I plan, which I hope to focus into the board of directors and AIA events. Also, I would like to help those in my shoes 5 years ago transition from intern at school to licensed architect. The transition was sometimes grueling, but now I have the op- portunity to help others achieve their goals. Currently I help our staff at ZDS with their licensure and always encourage others to talk about it. If elected, I would like to be the bridge from the younger or emerging professionals to the experienced senior board. Besides being coffee fueled, I am naturally high energy and feed of others who are excited about the same interests. I would love to be elected as the Young Architect Director.
