Are you ready?
You are about to hit the busiest few months of your educational career
and there is no doubt you will feel the pressure. This booklet is designed
to support you in the months ahead. It’s easy to find the prospect of
revision overwhelming and for time spent on it to be unproductive.

Whether you’re burying your head in the sand or starting to panic already,
this booklet will have something for you. It is laid out in sections to help
you with the different stages of revision:

 Essential Information on Exam entries / On the day
    Planning a Revision Timetable
 Equipment / Resources needed to revise
    General Tips for Revision
 Subject Specific Tips for Revision

The main thing to remember is there are plenty of people to help you. If
you need more support, ask the person in school you feel confident
seeking help from. This may be your tutor, a subject teacher, a Head of
House or a member of SLT. JUST ASK! We have all been through this and
know that planning for it can take away a lot of the stress. This booklet is
full of useful advice. Don’t file it under your bed – keep it handy for those
times when you feel you need a fresh look at things.

You will receive a candidate number. This is very important, as you must
write it on the front of every exam answer booklet.

In April, you will receive final entry information on an individual timetable
listing dates for written exams and whether it is a morning or afternoon
exam. Dates are available on the college website and in this booklet if you
need to check dates before then.

Exam warm-up sessions will start at 8.40 and 12.40. Everyone must be in
college by these times. All morning exams start at 9.00 and afternoon
exams at 1.00.

Unless given special instructions, you are asked to line up outside the
Sports Hall. You must attend in full college uniform. (This includes school
shoes!)

You are only allowed to take in any pre-release materials and equipment
specified by the exam boards, a pencil case and a bottle of water with the
label removed. The pencil case must be transparent and we advise
students to take in a spare of everything. We will also provide water and
pencil cases on exam desks too. Under no circumstances must mobile
phones, MP3 players or ipods, iwatches etc be taken into the
examination room. If you are found to have a mobile phone in your
possession, the exam boards will disqualify you. Hence, you are requested
to leave mobile phones at home. You will also be required to take your
watch off and place it on your table.

If you are too ill to attend an exam, you need to contact the school
immediately and obtain a certificate from the doctor as soon as possible.

There will be an assembly on final preparation for the exam season before
the written papers start. Appropriate information
will be forwarded to any absentees from that session. Remember to look
                                                           at your Exam
                                                           Handbook – copy
                                                           on the website if
                                                           you’ve lost yours!

Getting started
Before you start revising it is worth making sure you have
everything at your fingertips. This will stop you wasting
valuable time trying to find things.

                                                           WHERE TO REVISE ?
EQUIPMENT :
 Not in front of the TV.

for different subjects. You to work.
will need lots of this.  Lay out all the materials for

to treat them with caution – check they are covering what
is in your course. Check the list in this booklet.)

Revising is all about MEMORY. The memory is like a muscle. If you don’t exercise it,
it will grow weaker and weaker, but if you do exercise it, it will get stronger and
stronger.

TAKE LOTS OF BREAKS.

Most people can only concentrate, understand and remember for between 20 and 45
minutes at a time. DO NOT REVISE FOR LONGER WITHOUT A BREAK. If you do, most
of what you do, you will not remember.

Once you have finished learning something, your brain actually increases its power
and carries on remembering. lt will be sorting out what it has been learning, creating
a more complete picture of everything it has just learnt. Only then does the rapid
decline in memory begin and as much as 80% of what you learn in a day can be
forgotten almost immediately.

BUT WHAT CAN I DO TO STOP THIS?
                                            GO SURFING !!

To maximise your learning, you need to catch the top of the wave of your memory. To
do this, you need to look back at what you have been revising at certain times, when
that learning can be stamped in your memory more strongly, and you will retain it for
a much longer time. Look at the diagram below:

You need to review what you have learnt:

   After 10 minutes
 At the end of a day
 At the end of a week
 At the end of a month
 The week before the exams

Topics need to be revised more than once based on what we know about the brain.

It is important that when constructing a revision timetable to consider the following
issues:

 Remember sessions should only be for 30 – 40 minutes with 10-minute
     breaks.
    Start NOW :
    1-2 sessions on a week night.
    3-4 a day at the weekend.
 During holidays / study leave, revision should be far more intensive.
 Build in treats – time with friends, evenings out. Social time is vital in the
overall scheme, as long as there is a balance between work and play.
 Try and get a variety of subjects across a day
 Remember to build in slots to review the learning of the day
 When you write next week’s timetable, have you remembered to include
review slots for the work covered last week?

BREAKING IT DOWN:

If you say to yourself, “I’m doing Maths for 30 minutes and then half an hour of
French”,
YOU
       NEED
               TO
                      THINK
                               AGAIN

You need to be more specific:

“I’m doing algebra and irregular verbs.”

This way you are breaking the subject down into bitesize pieces. Your teachers will
help you to identify the key areas. Use the next page to help you.

Test yourself
The following strategies can be used for turning class notes into revision notes across
all subject areas. They should be read alongside the specific advice offered by
departments.

 Make up tests to try later
 Brainstorm a topic using a spider diagram
 Make your own flash cards – questions one side /
      answers on the back
 Put key words onto Post-It Notes, stick them
around the house to learn them
 Plan an exam answer and write the first
      paragraph
 Create a Mind Map (see later section)
 Use different colours to represent different
      things
 Use mnemonics for difficult spellings / sequences
(eg Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain – colours of rainbow)
 Make a chart to fit the information
     Make a flow chart
     Make a timeline
 Use pictures to represent key ideas
 List two sides of an argument
     Identify similarities / differences
 Create a dictionary for each subject
     Turn headings into questions
 Fill the bedroom walls with posters for key ideas.
     Make up cartoons
     Label pictures
 Record onto your phone key quotations /or
      French and German vocabulary
Creating a Mind Map
Creating a Mind Map

1. Start in the centre of the page with the word of your theme combined with
an image. Why? Because this allows you to spread out in all directions. Using
   imagery inspires your imagination.

2. Connect main branches to this central title/image. These should be the main
areas of the theme. Why? Because the brain works by association. This also
creates a basic structure or architecture to your thoughts.

3. Use smaller branches radiating from the main branches. Why? Working in this
way helps to organise your ideas, but also allows unusual links.

4. Use colour throughout. Why? Because colours are as exciting to your brain as
images. Colour adds vibrancy and life to your Mind map, and is more likely to
   inspire your creative thinking.

5. Use one key word per line. Why? Because single words give you Mind map
more power and flexibility. Each word can generate more words which can
   spark off new ideas.

6. Use images throughout. Why? Because each image is worth 1000 words and
can trigger a greater number of associations and ideas.
Using the internet / apps

The school library is open after school each day for you to use. The internet has an
overwhelming amount of resources for revision but needs to be used wisely. You need
to remember just because something is on a web page it is not necessarily reliable
information.

There are many useful sites, as the list below suggests. However, it is important you
do not waste time simply reading and scrolling up and down the page. Turn off
Twitter, Facebook or Snapchat etc. Avoid distractions. Have a list of the areas you
want to cover beside you so you can cross them off at various stages.

You can :

 Have a pen and paper beside them and do the activities which are suggested.
 Copy information into a programme of your choice and underline key words,
delete less important sentences, cut and paste key words etc.
 Most exam boards now carry examples of past papers and mark schemes.
You will find the board and syllabus number on your entry statement. Have a
go at the questions and look carefully at how an examiner would mark them.
 Test yourself using the online quizzes and if you do well you can cross that
    topic off your list

The emphasis must be on making that information your own in the same way you
must make your textbook notes your own. There is no one way to do this, so try to
vary the activities.

Remember the graph:

You have to re-visit your topics at key times to
ensure you can still remember what you learnt.

You need to review what you have learnt:

 At the end of a day
 At the end of a week
 At the end of a month
 The week before the exams

Remember – these are recommendations only. There is no expectation you will
 buy revision guides.
Many of you like to use revision guides so your teachers have selected some that
are appropriate for the course you are studying.

Biology
 Write out key terms and their definitions – then try
to recall them without the notes.
 Use key terms correctly in written descriptions of
                              biological processes.
 Create diagrams that explain how named biological

                              blood glucose / etc.
Strategies for revision  Try to draw the diagrams from memory and
compare with the original to see how accurate you
                              have been.
 Test yourself in “exam conditions” on past papers /
workbooks / etc (and mark using the given mark
schemes!) to see what you can recall and whether
you interpreted the question correctly. This drives
                              development of good exam technique.
