Are you ready? You are about to hit the busiest few months of your educational career and there is no doubt you will feel the pressure. This booklet is designed to support you in the months ahead. It’s easy to find the prospect of revision overwhelming and for time spent on it to be unproductive. Whether you’re burying your head in the sand or starting to panic already, this booklet will have something for you. It is laid out in sections to help you with the different stages of revision: Essential Information on Exam entries / On the day Planning a Revision Timetable Equipment / Resources needed to revise General Tips for Revision Subject Specific Tips for Revision The main thing to remember is there are plenty of people to help you. If you need more support, ask the person in school you feel confident seeking help from. This may be your tutor, a subject teacher, a Head of House or a member of SLT. JUST ASK! We have all been through this and know that planning for it can take away a lot of the stress. This booklet is full of useful advice. Don’t file it under your bed – keep it handy for those times when you feel you need a fresh look at things.
You will receive a candidate number. This is very important, as you must write it on the front of every exam answer booklet. In April, you will receive final entry information on an individual timetable listing dates for written exams and whether it is a morning or afternoon exam. Dates are available on the college website and in this booklet if you need to check dates before then. Exam warm-up sessions will start at 8.40 and 12.40. Everyone must be in college by these times. All morning exams start at 9.00 and afternoon exams at 1.00. Unless given special instructions, you are asked to line up outside the Sports Hall. You must attend in full college uniform. (This includes school shoes!) You are only allowed to take in any pre-release materials and equipment specified by the exam boards, a pencil case and a bottle of water with the label removed. The pencil case must be transparent and we advise students to take in a spare of everything. We will also provide water and pencil cases on exam desks too. Under no circumstances must mobile phones, MP3 players or ipods, iwatches etc be taken into the examination room. If you are found to have a mobile phone in your possession, the exam boards will disqualify you. Hence, you are requested to leave mobile phones at home. You will also be required to take your watch off and place it on your table. If you are too ill to attend an exam, you need to contact the school immediately and obtain a certificate from the doctor as soon as possible. There will be an assembly on final preparation for the exam season before the written papers start. Appropriate information will be forwarded to any absentees from that session. Remember to look at your Exam Handbook – copy on the website if you’ve lost yours!
Getting started Before you start revising it is worth making sure you have everything at your fingertips. This will stop you wasting valuable time trying to find things. WHERE TO REVISE ? Revision timetable An up to date set of class notes. Any revision materials given out by departments. Revision checklists. Lists of exactly what is in each exam. Any Study Guides which have been bought. (But you need to treat them with caution – check they are covering what is in your course. Check the list in this booklet.)
Revising is all about MEMORY. The memory is like a muscle. If you don’t exercise it, it will grow weaker and weaker, but if you do exercise it, it will get stronger and stronger. TAKE LOTS OF BREAKS. Most people can only concentrate, understand and remember for between 20 and 45 minutes at a time. DO NOT REVISE FOR LONGER WITHOUT A BREAK. If you do, most of what you do, you will not remember. Once you have finished learning something, your brain actually increases its power and carries on remembering. lt will be sorting out what it has been learning, creating a more complete picture of everything it has just learnt. Only then does the rapid decline in memory begin and as much as 80% of what you learn in a day can be forgotten almost immediately. BUT WHAT CAN I DO TO STOP THIS? GO SURFING !! To maximise your learning, you need to catch the top of the wave of your memory. To do this, you need to look back at what you have been revising at certain times, when that learning can be stamped in your memory more strongly, and you will retain it for a much longer time. Top 5 revision tips These will be explored in more detail on the next few pages. Split it up Take each subject and split into topics. Space it out Revise a variety of topics, not one subject all in one go Organise it Plan a timetable to check you’re doing a spread of topics and subjects. Test yourself Make flash cards to test yourself, write your own tests and do lots of exam practice questions Review it Revise something more than once – go back to it at key times to check you know it.

Organise it Topics need to be revised more than once based on what we know about the brain. It is important that when constructing a revision timetable to consider the following issues: Remember sessions should only be for 30 – 40 minutes with 10-minute breaks. Start NOW : 1-2 sessions on a week night. 3-4 a day at the weekend. During holidays / study leave, revision should be far more intensive. Build in treats – time with friends, evenings out. Social time is vital in the overall scheme, as long as there is a balance between work and play. Try and get a variety of subjects across a day Remember to build in slots to review the learning of the day When you write next week’s timetable, have you remembered to include review slots for the work covered last week? BREAKING IT DOWN: If you say to yourself, “I’m doing Maths for 30 minutes and then half an hour of French”, YOU NEED TO THINK AGAIN You need to be more specific: “I’m doing algebra and irregular verbs.” This way you are breaking the subject down into bitesize pieces. Your teachers will help you to identify the key areas. Use the next page to help you.

Test yourself The following strategies can be used for turning class notes into revision notes across all subject areas. They should be read alongside the specific advice offered by departments. Make up tests to try later Brainstorm a topic using a spider diagram Make your own flash cards – questions one side / answers on the back Put key words onto Post-It Notes, stick them around the house to learn them Plan an exam answer and write the first paragraph Create a Mind Map (see later section) Use different colours to represent different things Use mnemonics for difficult spellings / sequences (eg Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain – colours of rainbow) Make a chart to fit the information Make a flow chart Make a timeline Use pictures to represent key ideas List two sides of an argument Identify similarities / differences Create a dictionary for each subject Turn headings into questions Fill the bedroom walls with posters for key ideas. Make up cartoons Label pictures Record onto your phone key quotations /or French and German vocabulary
Creating a Mind Map
Creating a Mind Map 1. Start in the centre of the page with the word of your theme combined with an image. Why? Because this allows you to spread out in all directions. Using imagery inspires your imagination. 2. Connect main branches to this central title/image. These should be the main areas of the theme. Why? Because the brain works by association. This also creates a basic structure or architecture to your thoughts. 3. Use smaller branches radiating from the main branches. Why? Working in this way helps to organise your ideas, but also allows unusual links. 4. Use colour throughout. Why? Because colours are as exciting to your brain as images. Colour adds vibrancy and life to your Mind map, and is more likely to inspire your creative thinking. 5. Use one key word per line. Why? Because single words give you Mind map more power and flexibility. Each word can generate more words which can spark off new ideas. 6. Use images throughout. Why? Because each image is worth 1000 words and can trigger a greater number of associations and ideas.
Using the internet / apps The school library is open after school each day for you to use. The internet has an overwhelming amount of resources for revision but needs to be used wisely. You need to remember just because something is on a web page it is not necessarily reliable information. There are many useful sites, as the list below suggests. However, it is important you do not waste time simply reading and scrolling up and down the page. Turn off Twitter, Facebook or Snapchat etc. Avoid distractions. Have a list of the areas you want to cover beside you so you can cross them off at various stages. You can : Have a pen and paper beside them and do the activities which are suggested. Copy information into a programme of your choice and underline key words, delete less important sentences, cut and paste key words etc. Most exam boards now carry examples of past papers and mark schemes. You will find the board and syllabus number on your entry statement. Have a go at the questions and look carefully at how an examiner would mark them. Test yourself using the online quizzes and if you do well you can cross that topic off your list The emphasis must be on making that information your own in the same way you must make your textbook notes your own. There is no one way to do this, so try to vary the activities. Biology Write out key terms and their definitions – then try to recall them without the notes. Use key terms correctly in written descriptions of biological processes. Create diagrams that explain how named biological processes work, e.g. heartbeat / menstruation / gas exchange in plants and animals / control of blood glucose / etc. Strategies for revision Try to draw the diagrams from memory and compare with the original to see how accurate you have been. Test yourself in “exam conditions” on past papers / workbooks / etc (and mark using the given mark schemes!) to see what you can recall and whether you interpreted the question correctly. This drives development of good exam technique. Chemistry Ensure that you know how to use the Periodic table. What are groups, what are Periods, which number is the number of protons and which is the Relative Atomic Mass. Mind map a topic using your notes, revision guide and Activelearn. Try to memorise it and practise redrawing the Strategies for information from it without any hints. revision Create Question/Answer flash cards. If you get the answers wrong, practise every day; if you get them correct, practise once a week. Write down the 5 most important facts from a topic. Create an image or diagram that shows the important information that you need to remember from a topic. Remembering to use PEEEL Strategies Make Key terms flashcards for each topic below for revision Complete the Learning Checklists for each topic in your revision guides to assess your understanding so far. Learn your Physical and human Fieldwork like a case study. Use the model answers in your revision guides to create flashcards or a mind map covering each question type.
