Profit Track 100 research report 2016 1 INTRODUCTION This is the 17th year of The Sunday Times Profit Track 100, which has become the definitive league table of Britain’s private companies with the fastest-growing profits. BDO is the title sponsor of the league table, and the main sponsor is UBS Wealth Management. Average profit growth for the 100 companies over their latest three years was 82% a year with combined profits of £1.5bn, compared with an average growth rate of 68% on last year's table. Featured companies include household names such as domestic appliance manufacturer Gtech (No 2); ladies' clothing retailer Mint Velvet (No 31); online bookmaker bet365 (No 91); and sushi bar chain Wasabi (No 80). The No 1 company is energy efficiency consultancy Anesco, which installs and maintains the latest renewable energy equipment, such as solar panels and biomass boilers for homeowners, local authorities and businesses. Despite cuts to green subsidies in the UK, it grew profits 179% a year from £952,000 in 2012 to £20.7m in 2015. These figures illustrate the dynamic contribution of the Profit Track 100 companies to the British economy, and are outlined in more detail in the following pages. Profit Track 100 research report 2016 8 Seventeen years of Profit Track 100 Profit Track 100 was launched 17 years ago to recognise the success of Britain’s private companies with the fastest-growing profits. Since its launch, more than 1,200 different companies have appeared on the league table. The vital statistics of the league table companies have changed significantly over the last 17 years. The combined profits figure for all companies has more than doubled from £700m to £1.5bn, and total staff has increased by 13% from 57,700 to 65,100. Lance Uggla, founder and CEO of Markit, the financial information services provider, which first featured in 2012, Stock market flotations floated on Nasdaq in 2014 and is now valued at £3.7bn 37 companies have floated on the stock market. Profit Track 100 research report 2016 10 KEY THEMES & SELECTED COMPANY PROFILES On the following pages we profile examples of companies that demonstrate some of the key themes from this year’s league table. INTERNATIONAL EXPANSION More than half of the companies have international operations. They include online retailer The Hut Group (No 6), which has 48 local language websites and last year shipped 9m orders to 192 countries; and chemicals manufacturer Evans Vanodine (No 88), Dr Peter FitzGerald, founder of Randox Laboratories (No 65), which says 370m people worldwide are diagnosed which provides cleaning and animal health products to 78 countries, using one of its products every year and has manufacturing units in several countries including China and South Africa. Other examples are profiled below. Profit Track 100 research report 2016 11 REGIONAL STRENGTH More than half (55) of the companies are based outside London and the southeast, including seven of the top 10 and the four companies with the biggest profits which are Principal Hotels (No 15) in Harrogate; The Edinburgh Woollen Mill (No 85) in Dumfriesshire; bet365 (No 91) in Stoke-on-Trent; and housebuilder The Miller Group (No 28) in Edinburgh. Other examples are profiled below. Profit Track 100 research report 2016 12 CONSUMER SPENDING Companies (39) selling products or services directly to consumers feature strongly on the league table, reflecting a recovery in consumer spending. The companies include childrenswear retailer Childrensalon (No 45), which last year opened a second warehouse and increased sales to the Middle East; and car supermarket Motorpoint (No 16) which last year opened its ninth site near Gateshead and is reported to be considering a stock market listing later this year.
