ON BEHALF OF NORTH YORK GENERAL HOSPITAL AND FOUNDATION , we are proud to present the 2013-2014 Report to our Community, showcasing extraordinary results in our goal of making a world of difference to North York General patients and their families. This past year, both the Hospital and the Foundation succeeded in reaching milestone achievements. The Hospital continues to serve our growing and diverse community, and this year is no different. Seeing over 400,000 patient visits, and more than 120,000 visits to the Charlotte and Lewis Steinberg Emergency and Urgent Care Clinic, we remain one of the most visited emergency departments in Canada. Despite this, we continue to have the lowest wait times for surgery, the highest rating for patient safety and once again achieved a balanced budget for the 11th year in a row. The Foundation is proud to report that together we have reached 60 per cent of our $150 million campaign goal and raised more than $90 million. The Campaign is already making an impact on our patients and their families through the purchase of new equipment, educational opportunities for staff, renovations of our facilities and providing funding for our emerging priorities. Thanks to the support of our community and the exceptional performance of our investments, in this past year the Foundation has raised a total of $19 million, which surpassed our budget expectation by almost 40 per cent and made it the most successful year in the Foundation’s history. As a result, we were able to grant a record-breaking total of $5.9 million to the Hospital to fund key priorities. Some highlights include welcoming Dr. Frank Sullivan to his appointment as the Gordon F. Cheesbrough Research Chair in Family and Community Medicine. This research chair is the first of its kind in Canada, and will help continue to distinguish North York General as a global leader in practice- based research. Thanks to the leadership of the Baruch and Weisz families, the newly renovated Baruch/Weisz Outpatient Care Clinic will be open and operational this summer to help reduce our patients’ length of stay on inpatient units and alleviate the need for emergency visits. The continued visionary support of Gulshan and Pyarali G. Nanji allowed for the purchase of three new state-of-the-art CT scanners, one of which is the only one of its kind in the province. In this Report to our Community, we invite you to explore some of the ways North York General continues to impact the cultural mosaic of our community, and how your donations have made this possible. Thank you for making a world of difference. DR. TIM RUTLEDGE TERRY PURSELL President and CEO President and CEO North York General Hospital North York General Foundation REPORT TO OUR COMMUNITY 3
IMPR OV IN G FACILITIES “It was built with the vision for our patients today and for our future growth.” – Kate Zimmerman, Clinical Team Manager Listening to our Patients’ Needs VISIONARY NEW OUTPATIENT CLINIC SET TO REVOLUTIONIZE PATIENT CARE AT NORTH YORK GENERAL For the patients at North York General, the renovation of the Medical Surgical Clinic into the newly created Baruch/Weisz Outpatient Care Clinic is revolutionizing the way outpatient care will be delivered. Designed with the input of Patient and Family Advisors, the newly renovated space on the ground floor of the General site is flooded with natural sunlight, making it a beautiful patient-friendly space. Beyond just a physical improvement, the new Baruch/Weisz Outpatient Care Clinic will consolidate the seven core functions of outpatient care: General Internal Medicine, Acute Care Surgery, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Wound Care, Geriatrics, Stroke Prevention and Day Medicine, into one multifunctional space to improve the patient journey. Chief of Medicine Dr. Phillip Shin knows firsthand how vital this clinic is to reducing the inpatient length of stay and helping patients avoid visits to Emergency. “Prior to the Medical Surgical Clinic, all patients with a diagnosis of a pulmonary embolism were admitted, no exceptions,” says Dr. Shin. “Now I can start low-risk patients on blood thinners in Emergency and discharge them to outpatient care for reassessment in 48 hours, where they can be safely transitioned back to primary care.” Responding to patient needs, the Baruch/Weisz Outpatient Care Clinic will have extended hours in the evening and expanded clinics, giving it the capability to serve a greater number of patients. “We need to meet the growing volumes and we need to do it well,” says Kate Zimmerman, Clinical Team Manager, and that’s exactly what the Baruch/Weisz Outpatient Care Clinic was built to do. “It wasn’t just built for today,” says Zimmerman, “it was built with the vision for our future capacities and future growth.” With this new dedicated clinic, we are consolidating space within the hospital by freeing up inpatient space to be used more effectively, streamlining care to provide a better patient experience and creating an open space with plenty of privacy and a sense of comfort within the hospital setting. 4 EVERY GIFT IS MAKING A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE

an eating disorder. plan during her recovery from favourite part of her treatment Creating pieces of art was Laura’s One in five Canadians will experience some form of mental illness in their lifetime and 86 per cent of hospitalizations for mental illness in Canada occur in community hospitals like North York General. It is thanks to the visionary support of donors like RBC for investing in mental health care that Phillips House will become a reality to better support our community. 6 EVERY GIFT IS MAKING A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE
IMPR OV ING FACILITIES “Today, instead of resorting to an eating disorder to cope with negative feelings, I find myself channeling them through cooking.” – Laura Fung, Former Patient A Strong Voice for Those Suffering in Silence PHILLIPS HOUSE: THE FIRST FACILITY OF ITS KIND At 16 years old, Laura Fung lost her mother to lupus at North York General Hospital. Overwhelmed with the feeling of loss, she resorted to an eating disorder as a coping mechanism. After 13 years of suffering, at the age of 29, Laura found the support she needed to take back control of her life when the holistic approach of the mental health program at North York General aided her full recovery. “My eating disorder was once an escape — an escape from reality, an escape from always having to be strong,” says Laura. “It allowed me to be weak for once, but it became so severe that the effects were no longer an escape but a reality. I had developed an addiction.” “What people fail to understand about eating disorders is that it is an addiction and an illness,” says Laura, “and social stigma prevents those suffering from seeking help.” When Laura finally sought help, she had a team comprised of a psychologist, a dietitian and two social workers dedicated to supporting her journey out of addiction. The team provided one-to-one direction and counselling through the outpatient program and Laura was able to make the changes she needed, while still maintaining the positive aspects of her life. To better support outpatients like Laura, North York General is re-imagining the way mental health care is delivered and building the first mental health facility of its kind. Through the renovations of the historic Phillips House estate, North York General will amalgamate outpatient mental health services into one central location outside of the traditional institutional setting and mitigate the social stigma that is a primary barrier to accessing care. Laura successfully completed the program in January 2014 and wishes to channel her new positive outlook into being an advocate and a voice for those suffering in silence with mental illness. R ES EA R CH A ND INNOVATION “Practice-based research doesn’t start in a petri dish. It starts in our clinics and at our patients’ bedsides.” – Dr. Frank Sullivan, Gordon F. Cheesbrough Research Chair Innovating Patient Care THE FIRST RESEARCH CHAIR OF ITS KIND IN CANADA By researching how we provide health care and how to improve it, North York General is innovating patient care to save lives and enhance the quality of life for millions of people in our community and beyond. This study of health care is known as practice-based research. It doesn’t start in a petri dish; it starts in our clinics and at the bedside, where information is gathered and then studied to benefit our patients today and all Canadians tomorrow. North York General is a leader in practice-based research, and we are poised to become Canada’s first research-intensive community hospital. The appointment of Scotland’s Dr. Frank Sullivan to the Gordon F. Cheesbrough Research Chair in Family and Community Medicine is the first step in the evolution of a bold research strategy at North York General that will enhance patient care across the globe. The first research chair of its kind in Canada, Dr. Sullivan will advance the study of how primary care clinics and hospitals can collaborate to provide patients with the right care, at the right time, in the right place. Dr. Sullivan has also been appointed Director of UTOPIAN (University of Toronto Practice-Based Research Network), which links 14 teaching units, four rural sites, and 38 teaching practices in primary care research. Dr. Sullivan envisions our hospital as the nucleus of UTOPIAN, which will grow into one of a few globally significant regional networks for practice-based research in family and community medicine. A leader and a champion of North York General, Gordon F. Cheesbrough was just finishing his five-year term as Chair of the Hospital’s Board of Governors when he passed away suddenly after a short illness. The research chair was named to honour Gord’s extraordinary contributions and his belief in the value of pursuing research at our hospital. 8 EVERY GIFT IS MAKING A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE
Dr. Frank Sullivan is leading research in Family and Community Medicine. In December, the Hospital finalized an unprecedented research partnership with Mount Sinai Hospital’s Schwartz/Reisman Emergency Medicine Institute that has paved the way for our second Research Chair to contribute nationally significant research about emergency care. As the Cheesbrough Research Chair, Dr. Frank Sullivan is conducting practice-based research to change the way care is delivered. REPORT TO OUR COMMUNITY 9
“I found the nursing staff on 4 West exceptional.” – Anne McGarry, Former Patient North York General nurses learn about the tools in the Operating Rooms of the Future. 10 EVERY GIFT IS MAKING A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE
EDUCATION A Commitment to Excellence in Patient Care SUPPORTING OUR NURSES THROUGH EDUCATION NOW AND IN THE FUTURE When Anne McGarry arrived at the Branson site of North York General for knee replacement surgery, she knew she was in good hands. “The atmosphere was very comforting and the staff were all friendly and approachable,” says McGarry. Following her surgery, McGarry moved to the inpatient unit on 4 West at the General site, and found the same level of attentive care from the nursing staff attending to her recovery. “After the surgery and during the remainder of my stay, I found the nursing staff on 4 West exceptional” says McGarry. “I noticed how all the nurses were quick to respond and very kind and supportive.” “I recall one nurse in particular, Sam Singh, helped me when I was dealing with a pain crisis,” says McGarry. “She told me later that she had only been nursing for a year, which was really surprising, as she was wise beyond her years and so professional.” North York General's highly qualified nurses deliver the best possible patient- and family-centred care, but to stay at the forefront of best practices, our nurses also need to participate in continuing education. Investing in nursing education means that our patients will always receive care from clinicians who are up-to-date on the most advanced knowledge and techniques. In May 2013, the Foundation presented education awards in the areas of oncology, palliative care, paediatrics, neurology, stroke and rehab, to eight nurses with a demonstrated commitment to ongoing interprofessional development and excellence in patient care. We are proud to provide our nurses with the resources to pursue education, leadership and mentorship opportunities to better assist our patients today and in the years to come. Thanks to the generosity of Anne and the late Ivan Wiseman, The Anne and Ivan Wiseman Endowment for Nursing Excellence will help to ensure that our patients receive the best care now, and in the future. T ECHN OLOGY AND EQUIPMENT “The whole experience is much more comfortable and less intimidating for our patients.” – Dr. Elizabeth LaMere, Chief Radiologist Providing Our Patients with the Best Technology Available STATE-OF-THE-ART CT SCANNERS MAKE NORTH YORK GENERAL THE PROVINCIAL LEADER Each year, Dr. Elizabeth LaMere, Chief Radiologist and Medical Director of Our state-of-the-art CT scanner provides clearer images faster while using less radiation. Medical Imaging and her team help more than 200,000 patients who rely on the comprehensive range of imaging services offered at North York General to help ensure the right diagnosis, which leads to the right care at the right time. North York General is proud to announce that three new CT scanners are now in full operation to better help our patients. “These new scanners are capable of producing 3D images faster and with up to 50 per cent less radiation,” says Dr. LaMere. “This means that the other physicians and I are looking at more detailed images, which helps us to make more accurate diagnoses and provide the best possible treatment to our patients.” Of the new machines, the one that is particularly exciting is our new Siemens Somatom Flash scanner, the only CT scanner of its kind in Ontario and one of only six across Canada. “With this new scanner, my team and I are able to scan a patient from chest to pelvis in as little as 1.5 seconds,” says Dr. LaMere. These faster scans mean less motion blurs, leading to clearer images and more accurate diagnoses. “It also means our patients don’t need to hold their breath, as is necessary with older machines, which makes the whole experience much more comfortable and less intimidating.” Thanks to the support of Gulshan and Pyarali G. Nanji, each of our new state-of-the-art CT scanners has a different speciality focus. As a result, our Gulshan and Pyarali G. Nanji Ultrasound, CT and Radiography Centre is now better able to serve our growing patient population and continue providing the right care at the right time to best serve our community. 12 EVERY GIFT IS MAKING A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE
OUR VOLUNTEERS Thank you to all the members of Volunteer Services across all three sites of North York General for your passion and dedication towards supporting the delivery of high quality patient- and family-centred care. To date, Volunteer Services has raised more than $2 million towards their $3 million pledge in support of the Volunteer Services Centre for Medical Imaging. Thanks to the visionary investment of Gulshan and Pyarali G. Nanji, North York General is able to continue investing in the best possible technology to help our patients. T ECHN OLOGY AND EQUIPMENT “As one of the first hospitals in Canada with a completely integrated operating room, we are setting the new standard of care.” – Dr. Richard Bowry, Chief of Anesthesia The Highest Level of Patient Safety NORTH YORK GENERAL IS THE NATIONAL LEADER IN DELIVERING THE SAFEST POSSIBLE CARE North York General is setting the new standard for highest quality safety and care with the installation of 14 leading-edge anesthesia delivery units. Dr. Richard Bowry, Chief of Anesthesia at North York General, is particularly excited about the installation of state-of-the-art anesthesia work stations in all 12 operating rooms and in Labour and Delivery to deliver safe anesthesia to mothers during the delivery of their newborn child. “By having this advanced technology, we are now in a position where our patients are completely monitored from the moment they enter the operating room suite to the time they leave for recovery,” says Dr. Bowry. This continuous connection to one portable machine allows our patients to receive constant and consistent monitoring without changing between stationary machines, which is the current standard practice in most Canadian hospitals. As one of the first hospitals in Canada to have a completely integrated operating room, North York General is setting the new standard of care. These new units have the unique integration of state-of-the-art ventilation therapy, usually found in Intensive Care Units, combined with comprehensive monitoring that automatically generates an accurate patient chart. Our physicians are now able to place even more focus on providing the best possible patient- and family-centred care. “The benefit of the built-in ventilator,” says Dr. Bowry, “is that it allows us to care better for patients with complex lung disease and provide safer anesthetics for patients with critical illness.” REPORT TO OUR COMMUNITY 15
T HE R IBU VTISEION PR OGRAM F UND / PLANNED GIVING An Investment in Our Patients THE VALUE OF HAVING A VISION As an anesthesiologist at North York General, Dr. Kuldip Minhas has the unique opportunity to work with a variety of different departments and areas of care and can see firsthand the way that donations make an impact on all areas of the hospital. As a physician, Dr. Minhas is serving his community, but wanted to do more. “I feel that you should always give back to your community,” says Dr. Minhas. “I’m in the situation where I can help other people and I love being able to do that.” When it came time for Dr. Minhas and his wife Inder to make a donation to North York General, they chose to donate to the Vision Fund and make the funds available to the areas of greatest need in the hospital. “Funding is always necessary,” says Dr. Minhas, “and this way the funds can be used when and where they’re needed most.” Thanks to the generosity of donors like Dr. Kuldip and Mrs. Inder Minhas who support the Vision Fund, in 2013 North York General was able to purchase vital equipment. A second ultrasound machine for our BMO Financial Group Breast Diagnostic Centre will help provide 800 more ultrasound exams and 200 biopsies every year; and new surgical cameras, heart monitors, physiotherapy equipment and many other items that help to ensure exceptional care were all made possible by the generosity of our donors. 16 EVERY GIFT IS MAKING A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE

PHY S ICIANS’ CAMPAIGN Putting our Patients First CHIEF OF MEDICINE, DR. PHILLIP SHIN, KNOWS WHAT IT TAKES TO DELIVER THE BEST POSSIBLE CARE Dr. Phillip Shin believes in continually improving the highest quality care. When Dr. Phillip Shin became the Chief of Medicine in July 2013, he assumed the leadership of the largest department at North York General. Fifty per cent of all inpatient beds are part of the Medicine Program, and 65 per cent of all patients admitted through the Charlotte and Lewis Steinberg Emergency flow into the Medicine Program. As the new leader of the largest program at North York General, Dr. Shin truly believes in continually providing the highest quality patient- and family-centred care to each patient who comes through our doors. “I’ve most enjoyed the ability to develop and participate in key initiatives that improve the quality of patient care at North York General,” says Dr. Shin. “I’ve also realized that my administrative positions can make just as much of a positive impact on patients as my clinical roles.” Dr. Shin’s impact on our patients is set to expand even further with the upcoming redevelopment of the 7th and 8th floors for the creation of the Steinberg Family Acute Care Unit. Providing additional space for patients, this new unit will help to reduce bed wait-times and improve access to immediate quality care in one of the most visited emergency departments in Canada. Beyond the high quality care he provides each day, Dr. Shin knows that a strong impact can come from behind the scenes. As a donor to the Physicians’ Campaign, Dr. Shin’s impact can stretch outside of his own department and reach the whole North York General community. “Strong campaign support from the physicians in the Hospital shows the dedication we have to ensuring we deliver the best possible care for our patients,” says Dr. Shin. It is the leadership and commitment of our physicians that inspires others in our community to give back. The engagement of physicians in our annual Physicians’ Campaign reinforces the Hospital’s strong culture of philanthropy. Under the leadership of Co-Chairs Dr. Everton Gooden and Dr. David White in 2013, 100 per cent of departments participated in the Campaign, raising over $274,000. To date for this Campaign, the widespread support from the physicians has raised over $2 million to support North York General. Thanks to the ongoing support of Charlotte and Lewis Steinberg, the redevelopment of the 7th and 8th floors is under way to create the Steinberg Family Acute Care Unit. Providing 36 new private rooms that can be converted into isolation rooms, this new unit will improve patient safety by ensuring our staff have more facilities to better handle infectious diseases and reduce the risk of contagion. A year later, both the boys are healthy, happy and full of energy. “Having three small children, our life is pretty chaotic,” says Jody, “but it’s that good chaos that comes from knowing your children are healthy and full of life.” In honour of the twins first birthday, Jody and Jonathan decided to celebrate in a different way, and in lieu of gifts requested that a donation be made to support the NICU. “We’ve gone through this experience,” says Jody, “and we know what it means to have a premie in the NICU. We feel compelled to perpetuate our good experiences and give back.” With the support of friends and family, Jody raised a total of $672 through the fundraising platform, ECHOage. “We want to continue this tradition each year,” says Jody. “This is an important value to instill in our children and we look forward to the time when they can understand the importance of giving back to those who helped them in the past.” Each year, North York General receives support from thousands of annual and monthly donors to support the vital services our community relies on. It is only from the support of these generous gifts that we are able to accomplish our goal of providing the best in patient- and family-centred care. “You never know when you’re going to need the hospital,” says Jody. “With luck, you’ll never need it, but it’s wonderful to know that excellent care is there if you do.” 20 EVERY GIFT IS MAKING A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE

T R IBU T E PR OGRAM A Lasting Legacy for Our Strongest Advocate PATRICIA MACKEY PATIENT- AND FAMILY-CENTRED CARE EDUCATIONAL AWARD As both a patient and volunteer, Patricia Mackey knew that delivering the right care at the right time could make a world of difference to patients and their families. Through her own treatment for breast cancer, Pat had nothing but praise for the care she received from the highly skilled physicians and staff at North York General. Pat thought so highly of the hospital that she chose to bring her enthusiasm and sincerity to the volunteer role of Patient and Family Advisor on the North York General Patient and Family Advisory Council. North York General is the first hospital in the GTA to introduce this formal advisory committee, and it’s thanks to volunteers like Pat that the Hospital is able to evaluate services and policies from the perspective of patients and caregivers and implement effective changes. Pat was passionate about enhancing the hospital experience for patients and their families. It is with this passion in mind that The Patricia Mackey Patient- and Family-Centred Care Educational Award was established in Pat’s honour, following her passing in February 2014 from breast cancer. One of the few awards in Canada that emphasises the importance of advancing the mission of patient- and family-centred care, this educational award is a fitting tribute to a woman who dedicated so much of herself to thinking of others. 22 EVERY GIFT IS MAKING A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE

T HE PAT IEN T EXPERIENCE Starting the Conversation about Emergency Care THE PATIENT EXPERIENCE JOURNEY PROGRAM Ana Bector was born at North York General , and it’s also the hospital that saved her life after a sudden debilitating headache caused her to black out while driving, sending her car into a tree. Thankfully, no one else was injured and fast-acting witnesses had already called for an ambulance by the time Ana regained consciousness and was rushed to the Charlotte and Lewis Steinberg Emergency. “Every single person in Emergency was incredible,” says Ana. “All the staff I met took the time to explain what was happening and make friendly conversation to distract from my discomfort and fear. They were also very honest in the most compassionate and sensitive way.” The Emergency Team at North York General strives to make this experience commonplace for all patients in the Charlotte and Lewis Steinberg Emergency through the innovative Patient Experience Journey training program. Developed and piloted by North York General Emergency staff, the course focuses on teaching the team to dedicate more time to having conversations with Emergency patients at all points of care and to consider more than just their physical symptoms when identifying ways to improve their comfort. “This initiative is about changing the culture of emergency care,” says Andrea Ennis, Clinical Team Manager. “It’s about listening and responding to what every single patient needs for the best possible experience.” To date, no other hospital has implemented this type of program into emergency care. Says Ennis proudly, “This is where emergency care needs to go within the next few years, and North York General is starting the conversation.” 24 EVERY GIFT IS MAKING A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE
