Report on Observance of Surgical Strike Day Organised By Central University of Gujarat Sector-29, Gandhinagar, Gujarat-382030 India 1|Page
Introduction 1. Following the serious Uri terrorist attack incident which inflicted serious damage to our security forces on 18 September, 2016; Indian army on 29 September, 2016 conducted a successful surgical strike across the Line of Control. This strike was aimed to destroy the militants launch pads supported by Pakistan across LOC area. During these counter terrorist operations significant casualties were caused to terrorists and those providing support to them. 2. As per the direction of Government of India and University Grants Commission letter no. D.O. No. 14-15/2018(CPP-II) to the Higher Education Institutions, the Central University of Gujarat organised several activities to observe this day. Several activities were organised at the University level by the National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of University as well as by the School of National Security Studies & School of International Studies. Faculy members and students in the University actively participated in the events. List of events Following events were organised in order to sensitise and celebrate the surgical strike: - • Student visit to Army Brigade Headquarters in Gandhinagar on 28th September, 2018. • Essay competition on the Topic “Armed Forces and National Security in India” on 29th September 2018. • Lecture Series and Panel Discussion on “Pakistan’s Proxy Wars and India’s Response: Surgical Strikes and Beyond” on 29th September 2018. 2|Page
Student’s Visit to Army Station 3. To familiarise and inspire with the day to day life and lifestyle of Indian Army, a group of students including the National Service Scheme volunteers of Central University of Gujarat visited to Gandhinagar based Indian Army Camp. This was organised and led by School of National Security Studies & School of International Studies, Central University of Gujarat. Photo: Students Group Visiting Army Station (28/09/2018) 4. The NSS volunteers and students presented their tribute and wish messages to Armed Forces in form of posters. A special message was conveyed by Prof. S. A. Bari, hon’ble Vice- Chancellor of the Central University of Gujarat. It was carried and presented to the Commanding Officer of the Army Camp by Mr. T.K. Singh, Assistant Professor, School of National Security Studies and Dr.Rajnish Gupta, Assistant Professor and NSS Programme Officer of Central University of Gujarat. 3|Page

All the basic weapons and equipment used by the Indian Army were placed on displayed for the students. All the students were introduced of the basic information by the army weapon experts present at the display site. 4|Page
Essay competition on the topic “Armed Forces and National Security in India” 6. An essay competition on the topic “Armed Forces and National Security in India” was organised by the Office of the Dean of Students Welfare (DSW) on 29th September, 2018. The aim of the competition was to demonstrate the students’ knowledge and interests about India’s National Security and the role played by Indian Armed Forces in its maintenance. Photo: Student Participating in Essay Competition (29/09/2018) Lecture series and panel discussion on “Pakistan’s Proxy Wars and India’s Response: Surgical Strikes and Beyond” 7. A special lecture series and panel discussion was organised by the School of National Security Studies & School of International Studies. The topic of the lectures were, “Online Radicalisation: Threats & Challenges” and “ India’s National Security Decision-Making”. These lectures were delivered by Mr. Samir Patil, Fellow National Security Studies and Director of Centre for International Security, Gateway House. The lecture series was followed by a panel discussion titled as “Pakistan’s Proxy Wars and India’s Response: Surgical Strikes and Beyond” where experts on terrorism an national security expressed their views. The following topics were discussed in panel discussion: - • Overview of Surgical Strike by Mr. Rajesh Singh and Mr. Hiren Patel, Ph.D. Research Scholars, SNSS & SIS. • Terrorism in India by Prof. Sanjay Kumar Jha, Dean, SIS • Pakistan-Based Terror Groups by Prof. Manish, Chairperson, Centre for International Politics, SIS. • Global Efforts to Counter-Terrorism by Mr. Samir Patil, Director, Centre for International Security, Gateway House, Mumbai. • India’s Counter-Terrorism Architecture by Mr. T.K. Singh, Asst. Prof., SNSS. • India’s Options to Deal with Pakistan: Compellence and Beyond by Dr. Arun Vishwanathan, Chairperson, CSS. 5|Page
