The purpose of this publication is two-fold. Firstly, this course calendar is produced to encourage students and parents/guardians to keep themselves informed about secondary school education in Ontario and on Toronto Prep School programs and policies, and secondly, as a guide and planning tool designed to help parents and students in selecting courses for the 2020 - 2021 school year that ensure today’s educational choices open the right doors to the future. To help students achieve their educational goals, Toronto Prep School offers a wide range of courses in many subject areas. This publication will help you become familiar with the specific courses of study that are available, as well as with the staff, services, policies and practices designed to support students and their academic activities during their middle and upper school years. In essence, the guide is designed to help you choose and create your pathway to success. Education and selection of courses and programs in secondary school is built on a partnership among students, parent/guardians, and the school. This course calendar will assist students in making those important course and program selections. It is important to emphasize, however, that the course calendar is not the only source of information. The school’s teachers, Guidance Department and administrators can provide valuable assistance in all matters related to course selection, program and career planning. The staff at Toronto Prep School is committed to this partnership and is dedicated to helping our students complete their educational objectives. The Importance of a Secondary School Education Toronto Prep School believes in the importance and value of completing a secondary school education. Our school philosophy includes a commitment to reach every student to help him or her achieve a successful outcome from their school experience at TPS. The concept of completing a secondary school education is vital for students to make the transition into adulthood and provides an essential foundation from which one can join the global community as a self-sufficient and contributing member. Obtaining a high school diploma has become an increasingly important prerequisite for economic and social mobility in the world. Young people with a high school education are much better equipped for the modern life. They are more likely to be permanently employed and/or to be admitted to post- secondary institutions to further their education and become active and contributing members of our society. As such, we are committed to ensuring that all students have academic, social, and emotional supports to achieve this milestone. Furthermore, we are motivated by a belief that every student deserves a good outcome from his or her education, that the outcome should be the best fit possible for each student’s potential, willingness and capacity for further learning, and that all students should have a core of common knowledge, skills and values. It should also be noted that in the province of Ontario, the Ministry of Education, requires students to attend school until they reach the age of eighteen or until they have obtained an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).
