From the president August 2022 Students: Welcome to Murray State University! I am pleased to officially welcome you to Murray State University for the start of the Fall 2022 Semester. When I first came to Murray State as an undergraduate student, I immediately connected with the attractive campus and warm, friendly atmosphere of this great University. Much has changed at Murray State since I was a student, but the core values of our University have remained the same. Murray State continues to thrive on a beautiful, historic campus where students engage in a rich legacy of academic excellence provided by world-class faculty and staff in a caring, family-like atmosphere. As the 14th President of Murray State University and a proud alumnus, it is my sincere hope that every Murray State student will take the time to enjoy the multitude of opportunities our University has to offer as part of a life-defining collegiate experience that will prepare you for personal and professional success. Students, I hope you take full advantage of all the opportunities provided to you during your time at Murray State – from the Student Government Association and Residential College Association to Greek Life, to Racer Band, to athletics – or one of the other 170 campus organizations. Murray State is a special place and 2022 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of this University. At Murray State you will find many opportunities to learn and create a pathway in order to reach your goals. Whether you are a traditional first-time freshman, transferring from a community college/another university or are a non-traditional student, Murray State has developed programs and structures to meet your needs. We pride ourselves on focusing on our students to help ensure their success. Please be sure to take full advantage of all these opportunities. Let’s make it a great semester! Go Racers! Dr. Bob Jackson President
From the SGA presidentt Hello everyone and welcome to Murray State University! I am so thrilled to be on campus with you all for the 2022-2023 school year. My name is Ellie McGowan, and I am the Student Government Association President and Student Regent for this school year, and it is my honor and privilege to welcome each of you to what will become some of the best years and experiences of your life. Starting out my freshman year in 2020, I came to college slightly nervous, but excited, to embark on this new and unfamiliar journey. I never imagined that this university, this campus, and these people would impact me so much. However, I reside here, two years later, ever thankful and blessed to have made so many meaningful connections within my academic and extracurricular endeavors. Our Racer Community is special to all in so many different ways, and I can assure you that every student has a place here. Pursue your fondest passions and biggest dreams here, because I promise you that there is always someone here who will have your back. Many opportunities will be presented to you as a student here. Whether it’s serving in a leadership role for a Registered Student Organization, playing intramural sports with your Residential College, volunteering in the local community, joining a Greek organization, or pursuing academic research within your field of study, there is always a way to get involved and pursue your passions. However, one thing I hope to carry with me throughout my studies here is that some of the most important moments and times here aren’t limited to physical involvement. Some of my best friendships were developed within the second floor of Hollis C. Franklin Hall, and some of my most fond memories were going to Wing Wednesdays at Winslow every week! One thing that has shaped my experience the most have been the incredible individuals that fill this Racer Community - and I will forever be grateful for my small role within it. Now, embark on your own Murray State journey within our Racer Community. I have no doubt that each of you will impact Murray State in your own unique way, but I can assure you that being a part of this Racer Family will impact you as well. You will always be able to call this place home. With that, I wish each of you the best of luck within this year. If I can ever be of any assistance to you, please do not hesitate to let me know. Shoes Up and Go Racers! Sincerely, Ellie McGowan 2022-2023 SGA President and Student Regent
Welcome to Murray State! I first walked through the doors of the Murray State News’ newsroom during the first semester of my freshman year in the Fall of 2019. I was not sure what to expect, but since then The News has been a major aspect of my journey as a Murray State Racer. I started as a contributing writer with very little experience during my Freshman year and between going through the brunt of the COVID-19 pandemic, balancing my academics and maintaining a so- cial life I kept contributing to The News – eventually starting the Spring 2022 semester as the Edi- tor-in-Chief. Before coming to Murray State, I graduated from Fort Campbell High School in Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Being a part of an active military family I have lived in places such as Georgia, Washington and Hawaii, which I consider home. I was set on coming to Murray State because I liked the small town atmosphere. As a high school senior I feared being a tiny voice in lecture hall classes with over 100 students. With constant uprooting around the corner, I never created hard defined plans for the future. If someone would have told me I would be attending a college in Western Kentucky, before I ever set foot in Kentucky, I’d think they were bluffing. Now being a senior at Murray State I am happy that I decided to become a Racer, as well as a mem- ber of The Murray State News. The friends I have made and memories I have made along my college journey through class, work and residential college life are irreplaceable. As a student and a journalist, myself and my peers have seen many challenges in the past two years revolving around the COVID-19 pandemic. Starting the Fall 2022 semester a majority of students have not had a normal academic year, but I hope that will change. At the tail end of the Spring 2022 semester there was a return to normalcy with the revival of one of Murray State’s most popular traditions: All Campus Sing. I believe this is a major turn toward the right direction. With all of the unexpected changes throughout the years I am appreciative of the Murray State fac- ulty and staff for shifting their class structures and doing their best to accommodate their students. I am also appreciative of all of those with whome I work with at The Murray State News, for rising to the changes in the journalistic tides from shifting and focusing on the pandemic, to conducting a majority of their interviews on Zoom rather than in person. Seeing the light at the end of the tunnel I am optimistic for the future Murray State will be able to offer to continuing and prospective students. With that, I welcome you all to Murray State and wish you the best this semester and that Murray State can be your home away from home. Best wishes, Dionte Berry THE MURR AY STATE M Editor-in-Chief NEWS The Murray State News
