WELCOME THE RARE TO THE 2020 DESERT DASH RACE MARTHA MURORUA, Managing Director of Nedbank Namibia BREED This, the sixth year of Nedbank Namibia’s naming rights sponsorship of the world’s longest single-stage mountainbike race, has – perhaps – been the most challenging. The global challenges brought on by Covid-19 have also ushered in a great degree of uncertainty into all of our lives. Yet, by the time we were ready to open the online entries for the 2020 edition of the Nedbank Desert Dash around the mid-year mark, we did so with a steely determination that only a true Dasher will fully appreciate. This is the level of determination that will inexorably push you along a daunting, desolate stretch of 373 kilometres to the Swakopmund finish line. We welcome participants from all over the world to Namibia’s most iconic cycling race. Where, in the past, we have brought some innovative changes into the race to make it safer, more enjoyable and ultimately the best cycling experience of your life, this year’s changes to the race are primarily health related. It will be no less of an experience, I can assure you. There is so much pressure on people to be similar. TEAM DRIVER TEAM RIDER IMPORTANT RULES OF THE EVENT IMPORTANT RIDER INFORMATION 1. Safety is paramount for this event. Drive carefully and safely at all times. The route is 1. All 4 person team riders as well as their support drivers do NOT have access to the above Refresh Zones. 5. All solo support vehicles must take the route on C28 to Check point #3. Under no circumstances are you allowed to drive (straight, just past the checkpoint) against traffic. Only ambulance and official vehicles have permission to do so. ! if a team rider does DNF then the rest of the team may continue, but will not get a time nor finishers medal. 9. No team vehicles may overtake cyclists while descending a slope or hill. Vehicles to stay behind cyclists until the road is flat/ascending and it is safe to pass. NB – two person back-up drivers: This is particularly imperative for the last few kilometres to Goanikontes. Latest departure time from Checkpoint #1 will be 17h00. that will give you enough time to Maximum speed: 80km/h. Passing speed: 40km/h reach the Bokomo Checkpoint #3 by 21h00 latest. The last 11km on this route are against traffic, which is why we want you all in by 21h00 before the first riders depart the Bokomo 10. At the Finish Zone in Swakopmund you might be guided by a marshal to a dedicated halfway point (Checkpoint #3). If your riders are not in by 17:00 then you will have to drive parking area. Although there will be security guards present, please ensure that all belongings back down Kupferberg, onto the bypass and follow the solo back up route along the C28 are secure and safe. You’re using the parking area at your own risk. to Checkpoint #3. 11. Please notify the staff at the respective checkpoint if one of your riders has decided to DNF.
