Welcome to the Congress I am pleased to invite you to participate in the 2013 IASR World Congress on Suicide, which will be held in beautiful Montreal from June 10 to 13. Suicide has a terrible toll on most, if not all, societies around the world. Although we have made significant progress over the last decades in our understanding of risk factors for suicide, as well as in intervention and prevention strategies, much has yet to be learned and remains to be done. The 2013 IASR World Congress is the first of its kind. It is the first meeting of the International Academy for Suicide Research (IASR), organized by the Quebec Suicide Research Network (RQRS), in partnership with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), and in collaboration with the Association québécoise de prévention du suicide (AQPS), the Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention (CASP) and the Fédération Trauma Suicide Liaison Urgence (TSLU). This meeting will provide an inspiring forum for high level discussions on suicide research, suicide prevention and intervention. The theme of the congress is Suicide: From research to practice. We are planning a number of timely and stimulating plenary sessions to discuss contemporary issues on suicide research, avenues for suicide prevention and innovative ways to intervene on suicidal behavior. Other sessions will offer unique opportunities for engaged dialogue between researchers and clinicians, stakeholders and decision- makers, promoting both translation of research findings to practice, as well as informing research direction by clinical and prevention needs. I am excited by the high-caliber content of all planned congress activities, and I am sure you will be stimulated by this meeting. On behalf of all the members of the organizing team, and all our partners, I would like to express to all participants, faculty, and congressmen, a cordial welcome. Dr Gustavo Turecki President International Academy for Suicide Research Director Réseau québécois de recherche sur le suicide 3

The RQRS and AFSP invite any individuals, organizations or companies interested in contributing to this exceptional event, which will offer a unique opportunity to hear from and to discuss with international leaders in suicide and suicidal behavior research. About the 2013 Congress From research to practice The 2013 world congress of the International Academy for Suicide Research (IASR), entitled, “Suicide. From research to practice” will assemble the expertise, resources and members of the Québec Suicide Research Network (RQRS) and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) as well as their Canadian and European collaborators. From research to practice The objectives of the congress: Bring together researchers and stakeholders from all backgrounds to share their knowledge and their viewpoints on various aspects of the suicide phenomenon; Identify the needs in research as well as in intervention, prevention and postvention; Share information among researchers, students, stakeholders, health professionals, policy makers and citizens including recent discoveries, pertinent studies, and current practices, with respect to how they inform our understanding and might guide future directions; Stimulate collaborations; Create a permissive environment for networking; Invesitgate interventions, services and strategies with unique efficiency and impact in other healthcare fields and how they might be applicable to any aspect of suicide. 4
About the Organizers The International Academy for Suicide Research is an organization that promotes high standards of research and scholarship in the field of suicidal behaviour by fostering communication and cooperation among scholars engaged in such research. The Academy’s official publication is the Archives of Suicide Research, a peer-reviewed journal published by Taylor-Francis. The Academy holds annual scientific and business meetings, which have been held in conjunction with conferences presented by the International Association for Suicide Prevention, the European Symposium on Suicide and Suicidal Behaviour, and the American Association of Suicidology. For more information: http://www.suicide-research.org/ The RQRS is one of the research networks established by the Fonds de recherche Québec – Santé (FRQS). Created in 2009, the RQRS brings together a multidisciplinary team of healthcare workers and scientists in Québec to focus on suicide research and intervention. RQRS Mission The mission of the RQRS is to promote multidisciplinary research that will lead to the better characterization of suicide, the development of better intervetion strategies, and the prevention of suicide. RQRS Through the engagement of the scientific and healthcare communities, the RQRS creates opportunities to leverage research financing, develops new strategic initiatives, and communicates scientific information with the public. The RQRS further promotes better understanding and better intervention for people and populations at risk, and aims to bring together Québec’s science and policy leaders to solidify Quebec’s membership within international networks and organizations. The RQRS is interested in the neurobiological aspects of suicide and clinical intervention, specifically in the quality and adequacy of services provided to people or populations at risk. The RQRS is open to all those interested in suicide research including researchers, health professionals, clinicians, policy makers, and the general public.
