UNCERTAIN STATES SCANDINAVIA Uncertain States / Scandinavia is primarily an artist-led project that publishes and distributes a free broadsheet newspaper showing lens-based- art. Formed in 2016 by Dagny Hay, Tor S Ulstein and Charlie Fjätstöm, this year Will Vickers joined the team. The group has grown over the past 4 years from a small core to a loose confederacy of over 100 artists with different background who share the same ethos: that is, to create a plat-form for work that reflects some key social and political con- cerns and challenges how perceptions are formed in society on issues as diverse as politics, religion and personal identity, whilst at the same time nurture a growing community of independent artists who seek an alternative outlet for their artistic practice. Additionally, Ucs. Scandinavia is known to travel and collaborate with galleries and festivals all over Scandinavia and Europe. Subscribe to the newspaper at info@ucsscan- dinavia.com | Follow us on Instagram: ucssca- ndinavia Edited by Dagny Hay, Tor S. Ulstein, Will Vickers and Charlie Fjätström. We welcome submissions from lens-based artists for further publications.

Emil is a student at the Academy of Arts in Oslo and won with his series “Oblivion”: For years i have photographed myself, my friends, aswell as random people i meet in this small town. Many years of my life has been wasted because of alcohol and anexity. The one fills up the other, and the other empties the other. The two opposites goes hand in hand aswell as it makes everything worse. But for a couple of hours i get to have a break from the stresful, anxious and depressed life, just to wake up to everything being worse. Instagram: @emilkjaernli

GT NERGAARD GT Nergaard has 30 years of experience as a professional photographer and is a graduate of the Brooks Institute of Photography in Califor- nia. In parallel with his position as principal at the Norwegian School of Photography in Trondheim, he works with personal projects for books and exhibitions. Nergaard’s work is at the crossroads between fiction and reality, and is a poetic interpretation of the interaction between man and nature. Central is vitalism, the body and the sun as a cleansing force. The darkness represents a dystopian coun- terweight and establishes balance and harmony. There is no shadow without highlights, or day wit- hout night. Under Nordic Light he will show work from the book «Storvatn» which will be launched in the spring of 2021. www.gtnergaard.com
HANNA FAUSKE Hanna Fauske (b. 1988) is a visual artist with a bachelor’s degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Trondheim (2014). She creates images through stagings and compositions that are often expressed via photo and video. In her work, we explore a fictional world inspi- red by the everyday life of reality and so-called ordinary people. We are invited into the private spheres where Fauske highlights elements and situations that are seemingly normal and have become so common that we take them for gran- ted. In her work, she opens up for the alternative and the absurd, where humor and positivity help to create a light-hearted atmosphere around the odd and unusual. www.hannafauske.com

KARANTENEKUNST The corona crisis changed the everyday lives of many photographers and photography students throughout the nation. Overnight, future jobs was canceled, schools closed and many worried about the future. Fortunately, we are adaptable problem solvers. We can use situations like this to express our- selves visually and to create art. The Norwegian School of Photography gave its students a task during the lockdown, to document this special time. Through the procect «Karantenekunst» we will show how young talents interpret this state of emergency. The project is supported by Fritt Ord and exhibited at Kunstforeningen, Konsul Johnsens gate 1 a. www.karantenekunst.no

She holds a degree in Photo- graphy from Bergen Academy of Arts and Design and at Nordic Light Høst present photos from her project Y-blokka, depicting an iconic modernist building which formed part of the Norwegian government quarter for over fifty years. The images show the building scarred by the 2011 terror bombings, addressing the lack of historical awareness in cultural policies allowing the demolition of this major monument to the Norwegian welfare state. In relation to the festival theme of Human nature the project might address our innate need to mark ours- elves by creating something new, rather than acknowledge and build on history. www.katjahost.com

OLE BRODERSEN Ole Brodersens work explores the landscape and the natural forces that affect it. He tries to show us something beyond the borders; to the human experience of the landscape, to what we cannot always see. Brodersen tries to capture the feeling of being present in a landscape, by creating images that to a certain extent are direct imprints of the surroundings in motion. In the series Horizontal Displacement, he photographs from an open drif- ting boat with long exposures. The camera as a recording tool becomes part of the movements. www.olebrodersen.com
PAUL CUPIDO Paul Cupido’s (b. 1972, the Netherlands) art con- siders the transience of life and humanity’s search for happiness. Inspired by the Japanese principle of Mu (meaning ‘to not have’), for Cupido this concept encapsulates the existential void which he contemplates in his photography. Like the art of the Japanese haiku, Cupido’s works distill the simple and the beautiful. The idea of Mu goes beyond having to choose. In translation its meaning comes close to ‘does not have’. Searching for Mu — taking shape in pho- tographs, film clips, sound and folded paper — is tantamount to a quest. I have journeyed nearly as far away from home as possible, nevertheless, a journey outward equally means an exploration of our inner selves. A journey inward searching for acceptance that life comes to an end, yet at the same time knowing that life is circular, starting over time and again. www.paulcupido.nl

Vasli’s photography work pri- marily focuses on the family and self-portraiture, where he wishes to express a genuine interest in human emotions and relations. The quarantine has given me time to reflect and bring together old works that was never meant to be shown. During the period in which most of these portraits where taken, I often found myself in new situations seeking and feeling on loneli- ness. Very much how I imagine many of us must have felt during the last couple of months. www.vasli.no
