Sunshine Coast ElderCollege Preview of Fall 2021 Program COVID-19 PRECAUTIONS: Classes are in-person as well as on Zoom. Our age group, 55 and up, is particularly vulnerable to COVID 19 and variants are a concern. We are returning to in-person classes with great caution. ”For in person classes Elder College will follow all BC Government Health Orders and Guidelines. Accordingly masks are now mandatory in indoor areas and as of September 13th proof of vaccination will be required.” If public health guidelines change and necessitate a transition to Zoom, you will be given the opportunity to withdraw from the course, with registration costs refunded. 7
Geology of Thormanby Island Two classroom sessions – Wednesdays, August 25th and September 8th 2 – 4 PM St Hilda’s Church Meeting Room – Presenter – Peter Hews Field Trip – Wednesday, September 1st Buccaneer Marina, Secret Cove – 11 AM – 3 PM Travel by boat and explore on foot - dress accordingly! Course Fee $35 plus an additional $80 for the cost of field trip. This additional $80 fee will be collected at the first class (payment in cash or by cheque made out to “Sunshine Coast Elder College Society”) All participants must be fully vaccinated for COVID 19 – please bring your vaccination card along for the first classroom session for verification

Dr. Jill Dosso, PhD. Dr. Jill Dosso, PhD, Neuroscience, UBC, will present: • the current state of social robot technologies • ongoing and future research in the field of robotics and aging. Participants will: • “meet” several social robots through videos and demonstrations • discuss benefits and potential ethical issues • be invited to participate in ongoing UBC research (optional).

Ecology of the Salish Sea • The coastal waters of BC & Washington State are home to some of the worlds richest biodiversity. • The region has also been home to the Coast Salish People for millennia and in their honour is now officially known as the Salish Sea. • Technically, the Salish Sea is an Inland Sea and as the map shows the ecoregion includes the shorelines, ocean trenches, estuaries, rivers and forests. • In common with other coastal waters around the world, the pressure from human population, climate change, ocean acidification rich biodiversity has seen this formerly rich biodiversity in decline. What will we cover in the class? • Local initiatives being carried out to monitor and help understand the pressures on the Salish Sea. • We’ll meet local “Citizen Scientists” and hear about their work assisting researchers fields such as: • Forage fish, their habitats and abundance • Salmon escapement • The many roles of Kelp forests • Pinniped population density (seals, sea lions) • We’ll hear about the “Blue Economy”, the concept that sustainable management of the worlds oceans is not only possible but that it can help coastal communities to prosper while simultaneously rejuvenating biodiversity.

Lynda Mason - Painter The unexpected collaboration between my uncle and myself, who he never knew resulted in an exhibition in 2019 of sketches and paintings called “Tracing Footsteps”. Lynda will explain how this adventure came to be: from the discovery of 75 year-old sketches to the completion of 14 paintings that illustrate the story. She will also take you behind the scenes to view the anatomy of a landscape painting and a portrait.
Denis Gobeil – Wood Carver My name is Denis Gobeil, wood carver living in Gibsons B.C. I like to imagine that every piece of cottonwood bark has a face in it, hiding beneath its weathered surface. It is my art to reveal the face and to uncover its expressions, which are almost human expressions of joy, peace, kindness, humour, doubt and compassion. Tree spirits are organic art and I am blessed to be able to share them! During the Artists in the Studio course I will demonstrate how I carve my art.
Paula O’Brien – Digital Artist Paula is a long time digital artist. During her digital art session participants will: • Be introduced to the creation of digital art on iPad, mobile devices & computers • Learn the basic features of commonly used digital art programs/applications • View the main steps, tools and effects used to create digital art • Watch a step-by-step digital art creation process • Be encouraged to try creating digital art
Karen Biddlecombe – Fabric Artist/Quilter Participants will view the creation of a quilted Mug Rug. - a small quilt placed underneath hot drinks with room for a plate with a little tasty treat. • Learn basic quilting techniques, • Explore the making of a ‘quilt sandwich’

The Secret World of the Microscope • Microscopes are one of the key tools that have helped us to unveil the secrets of nature. • They have given us the ability to view, study and try to understand previously invisible things: • we can now identify and study microbes, bacilli, viruses etc. – human health • we can view small structures within larger objects – engineering • we can study symbiotic relationships between organisms - ecology • with modern developments we can examine molecules, and these days even atoms • etc. etc. • And we can use simple lenses and microscopes to learn about the world around us!
What will we cover? • We’ll explore how and why the microscope “reveals the invisible” • history of the microscope, from simple lens to the instruments of today. • we’ll cover significant discoveries where the microscope played a key role. • we’ll cover some safe, practical experiments that we can do as hobbyists using a microscope in the kitchen, garden, on pond water … • we’ll learn what to look for when buying a personal microscope • each week we’ll have a chance to make our own slides and view them • every class will include “hands-on” activities, with each person having access to their own microscope. Bring your own specimens! • AND WE’LL HAVE SAFE, FUN!

How to use a cell-phone as a microscope
Presenter • The class will be presented by Michael Bradley • Class size will be limited to allow for each participant to have access to a dedicated microscope for each class. • Eyepieces and equipment will not be shared • Laboratory and Covid protocols will be in force, all instruments will be sanitised before and after use. • The venue for this class is still being determined. 89
