Welcome to the most exciting part of your semester . . . MINISTRY. Ministry is the practical outpouring of your faith in Christ. Simply, if you have Jesus in you . . . then what ought to come out is MINISTRY! This is the part where you get to take what you’re learning in the classroom and live it out in this incredible city of Chicago. The purpose of Moody’s Field Education department is threefold: 1. To initiate your training and preparation for a lifetime of serving the Lord in a first-year class called Introduction to Ministry (FE 1100). 2. To provide you with actual ministry opportunities through structured field experience with local churches, parachurch organizations, and community service agencies (PCM 1100). 3. To collaborate with your academic major to cap off your educational program with an intense, focused internship (FE 4400) directly related to your chosen field of study. Practical Christian Ministry has always been a distinctive part of the education and spiritual life at Moody. PCM provides a multitude of situations in which you can demonstrate the love of Christ in applicable and life-changing ways. Why such an emphasis on ministry during your course of study at Moody? •• Exposure: PCM exposes you to a variety of ministry settings and practices. •• Experience: PCM provides you with valuable ministry experience. •• Exercise: PCM gives you the opportunity to exercise your spiritual gifts and practice what you’re learning in class. We in the Field Education and PCM department desire to team up with you to impact a dying and desperate world with the revolutionary love of our Lord Jesus Christ. That should be the best part of any semester! 4

Academic Requirements PCM is an essential part of Moody’s academic program, directed by the vice president and dean of the undergraduate school, and administered by qualified faculty and staff. Satisfactory completion of PCM each semester is a requirement for graduation. Grading for PCM is Pass/Fail. In order for a student to satisfactorily pass PCM for a semester, it is necessary to fulfill these three requirements: 1. Register for PCM at the end of each academic year via the PCM Request Form. 2. Attend PCM weekly throughout the semester, including makeups where applicable. 3. Record attendance weekly online on the my.moody.edu portal. If any one of these three is incomplete, you will fail PCM (NF) and must contact the PCM department regarding the completion of a second PCM during one of your remaining semesters. PCM Registration Students who are enrolled in at least one class (three or more hours) on campus and are pursuing their degree from Moody must register for PCM 1100 each semester. This policy exempts Elementary Education majors who are student teaching and students who are enrolled only for their internships. Registration Process All PCMs are assigned to individual students by the staff of the PCM department, under the direction of the chair of field education and the academic dean. Since PCM is an academic requirement, all weekly PCM assignments take precedence over employment and extracurricular activities. All incoming freshmen are assigned to a pre-approved ministry by the supervisor of SEED Ministries. Beginning with the sophomore year, you may request a specific ministry as a part of the PCM registration process. Because of Moody’s commitment to the local church, you should expect to have two or more weekend ministries at some time during the course of your enrollment at Moody. 7
To register for PCM 1100, you must submit your PCM request through the link emailed to you at the beginning of the registration period. This request is due the last Monday in April. Failing to register on time will result in the forfeiture of your opportunity to request a PCM. You will be assigned a PCM, and will not have the opportunity to change it. All PCMs are one-year (two-semester) commitments, from September through May each academic year. You may request a change of PCM between the fall and spring semesters by submitting the corresponding form by the deadline given. Ministry Types An essential component of Moody’s philosophy of field education is to provide opportunities for ministry exposure. To foster a diverse ministry experience during your enrollment, a variety of PCM activities will be built into your first four semesters. PCM ministries have been classified into four general categories, called SEED Ministries: •• Service: Homeless shelters, teaching life skills, after-school programs •• Evangelism: Open-air evangelism with Gospel Outreach, street outreach with Frontlines, campus ministry, and programs designed by specific churches or agencies (such as Child Evangelism Fellowship) •• Encouragement: Retirement or nursing homes, some tutoring programs •• Discipleship: Church youth groups and programs, children’s clubs, teaching Sunday School, other small group ministry Two of these four categories must be successfully completed during your freshman or sophomore years at Moody. PCMs for juniors and seniors are: •• Self-initiated: Students are actively involved in the selection of their PCMs. •• Major-specific: PCMs are intended to equip students for future ministry or vocational goals. Internships: An internship completed during a semester may qualify as a student’s PCM as well. PCM registration and weekly sign-in are still required for these internships. 8
Ministry Opportunities The PCM department partners with approximately 300 churches and agencies in the Chicago area for PCM placement. Many of these submit applications requesting student volunteers to serve in specific programs. A listing of these potential ministries is available on the my.moody portal under PCM sites and is updated each semester. Both Christian and non-Christian agencies in the Chicago area apply for students to serve as volunteers. We are careful to select ministry sites that will be beneficial to both the student and the people served. Not all ministry sites hold doctrinal positions identical to Moody’s. Students with special concerns about their participation at a particular ministry site should bring them to the attention of the PCM staff so appropriate action can be taken. Some students desire to serve in a particular church or agency not included in the pre-approved listing. In this case, their site supervisor must complete the PCM request email and submit it directly to the PCM department. If this procedure is not followed, the student will be assigned to a PCM from the pre-approved ministry listing. On-Campus PCMs One of the purposes of PCM is to place you in challenging ministry settings where you can impact the community at large. For this reason, you may only serve in an on-campus PCM for a maximum of two semesters during your Moody enrollment. On-campus PCMs may include: •• RA leadership or Life Group Leader •• Student leadership positions (RACO president, music group officers, etc.) •• Student-created groups serving other students Student-Created PCMs If you would like to request a PCM you have designed, please submit a one-page proposal to the PCM department by the registration deadline. The proposal must include: •• A description of the ministry you would do •• The church or agency where you would like to serve •• The person who would serve as your site supervisor These proposals will be considered for approval on an individual basis. 9
Attendance Requirements Students must be present at their assigned PCM each week during the semester as indicated by the calendar on page 5 of this guidebook. If you do not sign in for each week of PCM and complete all your makeups, you will receive a failing grade for the semester. You have five weeks into the next semester to care for any outstanding sign-ins or makeups (see Makeups on page 11 for details). However, if you have six or more incomplete sign-ins, you will automatically fail PCM and must complete two PCMs the following semester. It is crucial that students attend their assigned PCMs weekly for several reasons: •• Churches and agencies depend on students as reliable volunteers. •• As students prepare for future ministry, regular PCM attendance helps to develop the discipline of regular, programmed ministry (not just when it is convenient). •• Students’ grades (Pass/Fail) for the semester depend on it, as does their successful graduation from Moody Bible Institute. PCMs are assigned at the discretion of the PCM staff. You may not change your PCM, nor may you change PCM days or switch PCMs with other students. Requests for changes must be submitted to the PCM office. You are required to attend your originally assigned PCM until notified of the PCM department’s response to the change request. Recording Attendance Students must record their attendance online on a weekly basis, even if the ministry has not yet begun or if they have not yet received a PCM assignment. This includes students doing their internship as their PCM. This record serves as the basis for their grade (Pass/Fail) for the semester. If students do not sign in for PCM, they fail PCM for that semester, even if they went each week. Students may not sign in for another student. (Exception: married students may sign in for their spouses.) Signing In for PCM Students may sign in online any time after their PCM. A PCM week is defined as Monday through the following Sunday (see PCM Calendar, page 5). A PCM attendance-reporting cycle is defined as Monday through the second consecutive Wednesday. Data will be processed every Wednesday after midnight. Any PCM sign-in submitted after midnight on Wednesday will be considered late. You will be assessed a $5 fine for each late sign-in, which is automatically added to your school bill. 10
Integrity Students register their attendance on the honor system. In preparation for future ministry, it is important to remember that character is of utmost significance in God’s eyes. For this reason, we ask that students be completely honest in recording their weekly attendance and makeups. If we discover that any student has compromised his or her integrity in any way, he or she will be subject to dismissal from Moody. Allowed Cut Students may take one allowed cut per semester. Students must always notify their place of ministry and group leader when taking a cut. A makeup is not required for students’ allowed cut. If students take a second cut from their assigned ministry, they must complete seven makeups in addition to their regular ministry. If students take a third cut from their assigned ministry, they have failed their PCM. They must continue to go to their PCM for the remainder of the semester, but they will be required to complete two PCMs during one of their remaining semesters. If students take a fourth cut from their assigned ministry or if they falsify their attendance record, they will be subject to dismissal from Moody. Makeups When you are absent (e.g., sick, emergency at home, etc.) from PCM for any reason (other than your one allowed cut), the absence must be made up. A makeup is a ministry carried out in place of or in addition to your weekly PCM assignment. Makeups may be completed any time while school is in session, from the first day of classes through finals week. This includes spring break (with a maximum of two makeups), but excludes winter break and summer recess. PCM makeups may only be approved by PCM staff, not group leaders or site supervisors. Unacceptable makeups are voided through the online sign-in system. Contact PCM staff for makeup clarification and approval. Uncompleted makeups at the end of the semester will result in a failing grade. You have five weeks into the following semester to complete any outstanding makeups and email the PCM department. For each makeup, you must supply what you did, where you did it, and when. If you fail to notify the PCM department by the given deadline, you will receive a failing grade for that semester. You will have to complete two PCMs the following semester. 11
The following ministry activities do not qualify as a makeup: •• Student-initiated evangelism (apart from Moody student groups) •• Going along with friends to their PCM (unless confirmed by the ministry) •• Ushering for a church service •• PCM-related prayer time on campus •• Babysitting or nursery help •• Serving on dorm floor ministry teams •• Lesson preparations •• Moody chapel participation •• Staying later or arriving earlier at your own PCM The following examples qualify as a makeup: •• Participation on a worship team (instrumental, vocal) •• Substituting when fellow students are unable to attend their own PCM •• Participating in open-air evangelism (with Gospel Outreach) •• Participating in Frontlines ministry to the homeless •• Serving at a home church: preaching, teaching Sunday School, discipleship group or special event •• PCM training (e.g., background check) outside normal PCM time •• PCM ministry site’s telethon (phonathon) or some other special event outside of PCM •• Weekend retreat (one makeup, assisting, not simply attending the retreat) •• Construction help at church or ministry site (e.g., work day) •• PCM-sponsored special event (Angel Tree, spring break trip) •• Moody music group concert participation (does not include Moody chapel; see “Music Groups” chart on page 13 for further clarification) 12
Music Groups Music group participation includes Chorale, Worship Collectives, One O’Clock Jazz Band, Repertory SIngers, and Voices of Praise Gospel Choir. Not PCM or Music Activity PCM Makeup Other Makeup Exec. Sports Teams •• All absences for games should be recorded as “Absent–Other.” One makeup is required for each game. •• PCMs take precedence over practice sessions. Absences Select one of the following options to give a reason for your absence from PCM: •• Absent–Ministry Cancelled. A PCM ministry site and/or the PCM office may cancel ministry for a particular week (bad weather, school cancellation, etc.). One makeup is required for each cancellation. •• Absent–Sick. You must contact the PCM office (personal visit, email or phone call) prior to your PCM to verify that you are too sick to go to PCM. Failure to notify the PCM department in this manner will result in the absence being changed to “Cut.” You must also notify the group leader and site supervisor. One makeup is also required for each sick absence. •• First, second, third cut. See Allowed Cut, page 11. •• Senior Retreat. No makeup required. Mark in “Absent–Other” and contact PCM office via email to approve it. •• First-Year Retreat. Mark in “Absent–Other.” One makeup required. •• Absent–Other. This category is for unavoidable absences such as attendance at a funeral, required attendance at a concert for a Moody music group, etc. You must specify the reason for your absence; unacceptable explanations will be changed to “Cut.” All approved absences must be made up at a later date (exception: Senior retreat). Briefing Chapel At the beginning of each semester, on-campus briefings are held by some of the churches and agencies to introduce students to their new ministries. At these briefings you will learn about the ministry and your responsibilities there, and you will have the opportunity to meet site personnel. These briefings take place during a required Moody chapel. You are responsible for the information given. The PCM department will notify you of the briefing location. 14
Group Leaders Each semester, the PCM department designates one student per PCM as the group leader. This individual is responsible for taking initiative to serve as the contact person for communication between the other students, ministry site personnel, and the PCM department. Specific guidelines for group leaders are provided each semester by email. Specific Guidelines Student Safety We recognize the inherent risk involved in any off-campus activity, and therefore we have taken the following steps to minimize that risk: •• Students are typically assigned to PCMs in groups. (Students are assigned alone only at the discretion of the PCM staff.) •• Students are required to report any unsafe travel arrangements. If arrangements are deemed unsafe, students will be reassigned. •• Students must report any off-campus incidents in which they were victims of crime. Immediately call 911. Students must then contact the PCM department to be interviewed for an incident report. •• Students should use discretion when conversing with non-students on their PCM. You should not give out your (or any Moody student’s) personal information, such as last name, phone number, or room number. Child Safety Reporting Requirements Moody students who participate in PCM activities are considered mandatory reporters of child abuse. •• Child abuse is the mistreatment of a child under the age of 18. •• Child abuse can be physical, sexual, or mental—anything that results in injury or puts the child at serious risk of injury. •• Neglect is the failure of a parent or caretaker to provide adequate supervision, food, clothing, medical care, shelter, or other basic needs. If you suspect a child has been abused or neglected, you must immediately make a report in one of two ways: •• Call the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services Child Abuse Hotline, (800) 252-2873; or •• Notify DCFS in person or by telephone through the nearest DCFS office. 15
If you are a mandatory reporter (a Moody student working on PCM), you must confirm your telephone report in writing within 48 hours, using the official report form here: illinois.gov/dcfs/aboutus/notices/Pages/com_communications_forms.aspx (see CANTS 5). Non-mandated reporters may also use this form. About the Illinois Child Abuse Law The Illinois Abused and Neglected Child Reporting Act requires that certain listed professionals immediately report (or cause a report to be made) to the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services if they have reasonable cause to believe a child known to them in their professional or official capacity may be an abused or neglected child. The Illinois law applies to all “school personnel” and “personnel of institutions of higher education,” including all personnel of The Moody Bible Institute of Chicago. Although students are not specifically included in the mandatory reporter list, the law does include child care workers, such as those working in summer camps, recreational and athletic programs, child day care centers, counseling, youth ministry, mentoring and tutoring. Moody students participating in such activities while on PCM have mandatory reporting responsibilities under Illinois law. Failure to Report Child Sexual Abuse Failure to report child sexual abuse is a Class A misdemeanor in Illinois. If Moody personnel or Moody students personally observe sexual abuse of a child, they must notify law enforcement and DCFS as outlined above. After You Make a DCFS Report After you make a DCFS report, you must notify Moody’s PCM department. In addition you should notify your church or agency site supervisor (when appropriate). The people you notify about your DCFS report may not interfere with the state reporting process. Documentation Most churches and agencies require that all volunteers, including Moody students, be screened before serving. Some agencies require a simple volunteer application, while others require numerous forms, background checks, and fingerprinting. These requirements are for your protection as well as the protection of the people you serve. 16
Matters of Conscience Off-campus opportunities may arise of a social or political nature in which you may wish to be involved. No PCM credit, makeup or otherwise, will be granted for such activities unless you receive written permission from the PCM department prior to the activity. Dress Code Information concerning appropriate clothing for students’ particular PCMs will be provided by the church or agency where they have been assigned. Please be sensitive to different cultural expectations regarding dress and adjust as necessary. All Moody Student Life Guide requirements apply to each PCM. Transportation •• Travel time to students’ PCMs can range from just a few minutes to over an hour. •• Each student is responsible for contacting his or her church or agency for directions or for seeking help from the PCM office. •• Students must cover their own transportation expenses. •• A church or agency that requests a specific student is responsible for providing the transportation as well. •• In extreme weather conditions, students are advised to use discretion when traveling to and from PCM. You should check with your church or agency to confirm the program or activity is taking place before leaving campus. Students should not drive if road conditions are treacherous or if travel restrictions have been issued by Illinois Department of Transportation or the City of Chicago. Modes of Transportation to/from PCM •• Public Transportation (U-Pass)—Most PCMs are accessible via CTA, Chicago’s public transportation system. See transitchicago.com for bus and train routes. Students may also consult the PCM staff members for additional transportation assistance. •• Student-owned vehicles ($2.00 per week)—Students who have their own cars on campus may use them for their own PCMs and take their teammates with them; however, due to insurance regulations, drivers of personal vehicles for PCM-related activities must be approved through the facilities department. Due to these same regulations, students may not loan their personal vehicles to other students for PCM. It is the responsibility of each student riding in another student’s car to pay him or her the $2.00 per week for expenses. 17
•• Moody vehicles. The PCM department assigns Moody-owned vehicles to select PCMs on a semester-long basis. Priority for these vehicles is typically given to larger groups of students traveling to a PCM that may be more difficult to access via public transportation. See additional policies below. •• Walk. Some PCMs are within easy walking distance of Moody. Guidelines for Driving Moody Vehicles to PCM-related Activities The vehicles that the students have the privilege of using for PCM ultimately belong to the Lord. You are expected to be a good, responsible steward of these vehicles. •• Only drivers who are approved by both the PCM and the facilities departments may drive Moody vehicles to PCM-related activities. This privilege may be revoked at any time for violations of Moody’s vehicle use policy (e.g., irresponsible or careless behavior, moving violations, or other things of that nature). •• You may request a Moody vehicle by submitting the PCM Vehicle Request form online through the my.moody portal. •• Churches and agencies should use their own vehicles for activities not related to transporting Moody students to and from the ministry site. If you would like to request a vehicle for a special PCM event, please contact the PCM department. •• PCM vehicles are not available for student use when PCMs are not required (see PCM Calendar, page 5). •• You should remove all personal items and trash from the vehicle upon returning from PCM. •• Accidents: Students who are involved in an accident, no matter how minor, must follow the instructions from the facilities department found in each vehicle. Upon returning to Moody, the driver must report the accident to both the facilities department and the PCM department. •• Tickets: Drivers are responsible for any violations incurred when driving to or parking at their PCMs. Tickets must be reported to both the facilities department and the PCM department. 18
Communication The PCM department provides assistance for any student who has questions about his or her ministry or is encountering difficulties. Feel free to contact us via email, phone, or in person. Our office hours are M–F, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. We can also be reached via Facebook (Practical Christian Ministries Department of Moody Bible Institute) or Twitter (@PCMdept). Both pages are regularly monitored. We will contact students regarding PCM throughout the semester. Our primary communication is via campus email and the Moodycaster. You are responsible for monitoring email messages and the Moodycaster and responding promptly. Any student who ignores a message from the PCM department may be referred to the dean of students. Evaluations Each semester the site supervisors are sent an evaluation for each student serving in their ministry/organization. This is an opportunity for them to sit down with their students and review their performance at PCM. This input is valuable for our department as well, and at times we will contact students regarding the content of these evaluations. Literature Bibles, gospel tracts, and other Christian materials in a variety of languages are available in the PCM department. These materials are free but are only for student PCM use. Please do not take more than four Bibles or ten tracts at once. Social service directories are available for individuals needing practical assistance such as housing, food, and clothing. You are not obligated in any way to assist the work of a ministry financially with such things as teaching materials, special projects, or any other resources. Special Ministry Opportunities In addition to weekly PCMs, the PCM department sponsors special ministry events throughout the semester. They are announced via the Moodycaster, and are often in conjunction with PCM ministry sites. 19
PCM Ministry Trips The PCM department sponsors several spring break ministry trips each year where students can apply what they are learning in the classroom to real-life settings. Each trip is designed to expand your ministry experience and immerse you in full-time ministry for two full weeks, either overseas or stateside. The purpose of these trips is to spread God’s glory through word and deed, and to be used as His servants to communicate the gospel. Trips are led by PCM staff or Moody faculty and provide opportunities for learning, growth, and mentoring. Recent trips have included refugee care, serving in local churches, evangelizing overseas, and helping men and women struggling with addiction. For more information or to propose a new trip opportunity, please contact the ministries project coordinator (see page 6). 20

What Students Are Saying “ . . . as I began to serve at Good News, I fell deeply in love with the kids there. I had the earnest desire to see them grow, to see them thrive, and to see them understand better their relationship with Jesus Christ.” —Student serving with the Good News Bible Church Awana program “God is so good. This class is really changing. The Spirit of the Lord is moving. One of the young men ran up to the front of church this morning to ask to receive baptism because of his confession of the Lord.” —Student serving with Marquette Manor Baptist Church “So, there are those kids that [make] you wonder, ‘Does what I am saying even matter? God, I’m praying! Are you working?’ and then they say things like ‘When you come back next year, can we just go through the Bible verse by verse? I’m tired of everyone skipping around. I want to know God for real.’ . . . All I could say was ‘Yes. Absolutely.’ How can I not come back after that?” —Student serving at the Campus Crusade-Military Awana program “I am overjoyed to know the impact that this show has had just on the people performing it.” —Student serving with the traveling theater group, Ad Vivum “This ministry teaches me that one just has to stick with a ministry for a while in order to become more comfortable. It’s great!” —Student serving with By the Hand Club for Kids “This is a tough ministry . . . yes. And if you let it, it will break you, change you, and grow you more into a person who reflects Christ to others in tangible ways. What a blessing it has been to serve the Lord this semester at Frontlines on Chicago streets with my wonderful route group!” —Student serving with the homeless outreach, Frontlines 22
