Shedding Light on the Impact of Technology Many scaffolding companies are already aware that investing in technology is critical to attracting and retaining talent, remaining competitive, and preserving profitability. Yet, the construction sector has been among the slowest to adopt technology – dragging down labor-productivity growth over the last two decades, a missed opportunity valued at $1.6 trillion. It could be that those in this sector are unsure of the return on investment in technology. Making any investment in your business is not an easy decision, and you may be wondering just how your investment in software or technology will really pay off. Last year, we at Avontus Software set out to discover whether customers are seeing improvements after investing in our software products - Avontus Quantify, Avontus Designer, and Avontus Viewer. We surveyed a total of 118 scaffolding companies and contractors around the world who shared their experiences using our range of scaffolding software. The results were enlightening as the majority of respondents reported positive growth and improved processes upon adopting scaffold rental management and design software. Most of the respondents, from across the residential, industrial, and commercial scaffolding sectors, saw an improvement in efficiency, productivity, safety, and communication. We analyzed the results and compiled our findings in a free downloadable report, Measuring the Impact of Technology. This report takes a deep dive into their responses to further analyze the impact of technology on scaffolding businesses like yours, and the potential for digital transformation across the industry. Here are some key findings: Communication Is Improving Lack of communication is a major problem when there are multiple parties involved in a scaffolding project, particularly when it comes to avoiding delays, addressing hazards, and preventing costly rework due to misunderstood project requirements. Most respondents found that communication has improved upon using Quantify and Designer. This includes communications with engineers, vendors, partners, and customers, as well as internal and jobsite communications. THE SARNZ PLATFROM WINTER 2021 | 13
Source: Measuring the Impact of Technology report Reduced Delays and Improved Processes Project delays can inflate the costs of all work that depends on a scaffold, so rapid and accurate delivery of access solutions is critical to reducing those overruns and keeping clients happy. Source: Measuring the Impact of Technology report Our survey found that well over half of surveyed respondents agreed that Quantify and Designer improve processes and reduce costly delays. More than 60 percent of users also said that they took up the software to optimize current processes. 14 | THESource: SARNZ PLATFROM WINTER 2021 Measuring the Impact of Technology report
Better Project and Inventory Management Another major issue in the construction industry is a lack of accountability and control over projects. This isn’t surprising given the many moving parts of a project; however, there is room for improvement. With software that’s built for scaffolding, project managers can take better control of their work and improve transparency. Inventory management becomes more efficient, saving time and preventing delays from surprise shortfalls at site. The survey results showed that the right Source: Measuring the Impact of Technology report software improves accountability and project control. Safety Is Improving On-Site Of course, safety is of utmost importance on a job site. Unfortunately, safety hazards are bound to arise when plans are nonexistent or difficult to understand and changes are done at the last minute. This is why safety is a significant factor for many scaffolding companies when employing new technologies such as design software with new and more detailed visualization capabilities. Training Updates: (Resource: Skills.org.nz) RCC Skills has developed a new online platform to manage its Recognition of Current Competency (RCC) programmes. The Recognition New Zealand Platform will be used for both Scaffolding and Rigging. There won’t be much visible change. Applications will continue to be via the website as it is now for Scaffolding. Scaffolding Review of Qualifications The Scaffolding unit standards have been reviewed and two new unit standards developed. A final meeting is required for the endorsement of the review changes. The last meeting is expected to be held in August 2021. Rigging There has been a delay in the launch of the enrolments for Rigging L3. The tutor that was intended to be sub-contracted became unavailable to deliver the programme as scheduled. TPP has confirmed they are in the final stages of recruitment for permanent positions, and one of the candidates has rigging experience. They intend to confirm start dates for the TPP enrolments in early August. Certificate Only Process This gives the trainees, who have achieved all the unit standards in the programme through a casual credit process, the ability to apply to Skills for the award of the qualification. The proposed launch for the Certificate Only Process is in August 2021. THE SARNZ PLATFROM WINTER 2021 | 19

July Immigration Update (Resource: immigration.govt.nz) In the last issue of Platform, we provided an update on the Government’s decision to introduce the new temporary work visa called the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV), which consolidates six visas into one, and has three steps that employers will need take: • apply for accreditation under the new system • apply for a job check to make sure the role they want to fill cannot be done by New Zealanders, and • request a migrant worker to apply for a visa. The Government has decided to defer the introduction of the new Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) until mid-2022. Employers will still need to apply to be accredited before this is adopted in mid-2022 if they want to employ migrants under the AEWV. The AEWV is being postponed as one of the six it will be incorporating is the Essential Skills Work Visa. In response to COVID-19, the government has decided to make changes to the Essential Skills visas to streamline application processing and increase visa duration. While the change to the AEWV has been postponed for another year to mid-2022, it’s a good idea to get familiar with the changes, and if they will affect you. The new accreditation levels under the AEWV are: • standard accreditation — for employers who want to have up to 5 migrant workers on AEWVs at any one time • high-volume accreditation — for employers who want to have 6 or more migrant workers on AEWVs at any one time. For more information, and the full criteria, check out the immigration.govt.nz website. Currently, sector agreements are on hold to be discussed but when these happen, we will lobby if needed to ensure our needs or concerns are heard. We have been working with Working In to provide technical advice and updates on this. You can work directly with them if you would like help or advice. If you email Nassim.lalehzari@workingin.com and ask to be added to their mailing list this will also keep you updated.
