PiXL Primary Offer 2020/21 www.pixl.org.uk 03 How the landscape has changed since we produced our first edition of our Core Offer for 2020-21. The world has changed as it wrestles with a pandemic never before witnessed in my lifetime. This of course, presents a challenge to us all and especially our schools and the leadership challenges it presents for school leaders. With this in mind we have taken a root and branch approach to reviewing how we work with schools so that we can be just as effective as we have always been to ensure you can do the best you can for your pupils in very challenging circumstances. What will almost certainly be different for the start of term will be how we offer our National Conferences and support individual schools through our Associate schedule Our first National Conference in the Autumn Term will be digital, in a similar way to the one we will be running on 30 June 2020. It will offer all the benefits detailed on page 6 but using a digital platform. You will be able register in the usual way except it means more of your staff can access the National Conference instead of the restriction of only two places as well as the advantage of not having to travel to London. Without doubt, it will be great to see everyone at Central Hall again, when it is safe to do so, and what a Conference that will be! With regards to your Associate visit, we still intend to offer this support through a digital platform. Exact details to be made available soon. Our commitment to our schools, if anything, has been stepped up to match to personalize the support we can offer you as we recognise and understand that ‘your cohort, your context and your curriculum’ may be different to the one you had on the 23 March 2020. Our Second Edition of our Core Offer for 2020-21, will explain how we have achieved this.

PiXL Primary Offer 2020/21 www.pixl.org.uk 07 Associate Meetings Being a member of PiXL Primary partnership is a relationship and it is through the offer of 1:1 Associate meetings that this relationship is fully realised. Each year, in September, PiXL will provide schools with the support of an Associate with effective school leadership experience to advise on the implementation of PiXL strategies and resources. The Associate, allocated to you for the year, will meet with you four times, for up to an hour, teasing out your issues and barriers to pupil progress and offering personalised and pertinent advice on how to secure further impact for your pupils. For this year, in line with any on- going social distancing requirements, a ‘virtual’ Associate meeting will be introduced in September. Your Associate will agree with you which platform to use and will develop an agenda which reflects the appropriate application of PiXL strategies and resources given the context of your school at that time. PiXL Primary Offer 2020/21 www.pixl.org.uk 08 Diagnosis, Therapy, Testing and Revisiting (DTTR) Diagnosis, Therapy, Testing and Revisiting (DTTR) is a core principle underpinning the PiXL approach to supporting pupils. Fundamental to the ability to improve pupil outcomes is having a clear understanding of where pupils have gaps in learning. Once the gaps have been identified, the right support to address these gaps is put in place, followed by testing to make sure the gaps have been filled and then revisiting to check that pupils have retained the new learning. Diagnosis Therapy The first and most crucial aspect to the DTTR methodology is Providing therapy is the action of teaching and securing the Diagnosis and there are two parts to this: identified gaps in each Key Marginal pupil’s learning. PiXL Primary Offer 2020/21 www.pixl.org.uk 09 Assessment An important part of our offer to schools is the PiXL Assessment Package. This comprehensive package not only offers robust assessment papers for Years 1-6 but also a range of Question Level Analysis (QLA) tools, which includes analysis of each school’s performance against national performance. The PiXL assessments, along with the QLA tools, are rooted in them as a teaching and learning tool by identifying gaps and the core PiXL Principle of Diagnosis, Therapy and Testing. We acknowledge that in the first few weeks when pupils return to school in September, class teachers and leaders will be focused on efficiently and accurately identifying gaps in learning across whole cohorts. The Autumn Transition Package will support schools in applying the PiXL methodology of Diagnosis, Therapy, Testing and Revisiting in effectively identifying and addressing pupils’ gaps. Transition Cohort A checklist of elements taken from two to three Characteristics (areas of the Curriculum) of that year Checklists (TCCs) – group’s and the previous year’s Personalised Learning Checklist (PLC). These will be the main elements Years 2-6 which we feel represent the foundations for that year and are key to securing before moving on. There are separate diagnostic assessments for each Characteristic Assessments allowing teachers to work on a Characteristic at a time. These will be available with every set of Diagnostic Assessments allowing for efficient diagnosis of gaps. Question Partnership data will allow schools to benchmark with other schools. Existing PiXL Primary PLC therapies will be linked to every element on the TCCs allowing teachers to Therapies have sets of ready prepared resources to tackle identified gaps. It brings together the key elements of tracking against PiXL grades, managing the Personalised Learning Checklists, and accessing valuable resources, tests and question level analyses all on the same platform. The strength of PrimaryWise is the ease in which therapies can be accessed alongside the ability to quickly and simply identify and plan for groups of children who require additional support and teaching. It is critical for the Raising Standards Leader and staff to have access and understand the key functions of this platform. The skills that these resources develop are also set in the context of where in real life these will be useful. These include interpreting and using tables, the process of elimination, sequencing and summarising. Learning and Life skills resources are available from Y1-6 and demonstrate how these skills can be developed across core and foundation subjects. PiXL Knowledge This strategy is based upon three phases of learning: 1. KnowIT: The basic knowledge that pupils will need to know about a concept 2. GraspIT: An opportunity for pupils to apply this learning 3. ThinkIT: A chance to deepen pupils’ understanding of a concept This strategy is designed to teach pupils core curriculum concepts and then deepen their understanding by asking them to apply it in different ways. Each curriculum concept covered has three mats – KnowIT, GraspIT and ThinkIT, with images on the reverse to support pupils in committing learning to the long- term memory. Mats are available for specific areas of study within Progression Ladders Reading, Writing, mathematics and Science for each phase (KS1/ Whilst resources are primarily targeted at pupils, PiXL also Y3-4/Y5-6). offers some aimed at supporting and improving teacher subject knowledge. This enables teachers to refine the diagnostic process and identify the correct entry point to address gaps in prior learning. To complement this, common errors and misconceptions, as well as high quality modelling, offer those needing it a deeper understanding of the concept in question. The exemplification of how to frame questions to provide greater challenge is also an invaluable aspect of the ladders.
