PDHSSpring2019 Penticton & District Hospice Society Newsletter Date May 2019 NATIONAL HOSPICE PALLIATIVE CARE WEEK MAY 5 - 11, 2019 National Hospice Palliative Care Week is a time to celebrate and share achievements of hospice palliative care throughout the nation, but it also provides a platform to look at shortcomings and create bridges for these gaps. This year, CHPCA responded to a call for an updated “Busting the Myths” campaign. Myths circulate about accessibility, ease of access, illness criteria and cultural misperceptions of hospice palliative care and impacts care that is accessed and provided. (see page 3). To continue the conversation online, social media users are invited to test their knowledge to debunk myths by engaging with CHPCA’s Facebook and Twitter questions throughout the week. In addition, social media users are encouraged to use the hashtag #BustingtheMyths to share myths they’ve encountered. ~ Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association Westjet and Rona have given in support of National Hospice Palliative Care Week to help the Penticton & District Hospice Society raise funds and awareness surrounding palliative care. Palliative Paramedic Program to Train Thousands in End-of-Life Care Health authorities across the country are getting funds to train thousands of paramedics to deliver palliative care. The Canadian Partnership Against Cancer and the Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement say they are jointly providing up to $5.5 million over the next four years for the plan in six provinces. They expect that will support training for more than 5,000 paramedics. The two agencies say palliative paramedic services can reduce unnecessary hospital visits and give those with cancer and other life-limiting conditions access to urgent end-of-life care "when they need it, and where they want it." The program is based on existing models in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Alberta. The funds will go to health teams including: BC Emergency Health Services, Saskatchewan Health Authority Regina Area, Interlake- Eastern Regional Health Authority in Manitoba, York Region Paramedic Services in Ontario, Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, New Brunswick Department of Health and Eastern Health in Newfoundland and Labrador. The program will run until spring 2022. Having paramedics able to deliver palliative care eases the strain on health-care resources including hospital beds and emergency depart- ments and cuts the total time paramedics spend on a call, the CEO of the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer said Tuesday in a release. "A big part of achieving a more sustainable cancer system is finding ways to have vital supports provided to patients in their home and com- munity," said Cindy Morton, whose Health Canada-funded organization is a network of cancer agencies, health system leaders and experts that look for improvements and efficiencies in cancer care. The Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement is a not-for-profit organization funded by Health Canada that works with partners to identify ways to improve patient care. ~ The Canadian Press Yes! Volunteer Report National Volunteer week was April 8-12 this year. Recognizing these people for their time, efforts and compassion seems insignificant compared to what they do. The depth to this program and its effects continues to amaze me even though I have been with it for 8 years. Our function at Vanilla Pod/Poplar Grove winery was so beautiful. The food was fantastic, view was amazing and the company of all of the volunteers was the highlight. I would like to thank Paul and his staff for their wonderful service and support. They also value you and what you do and gave us a 50% discount on the evening. THAT IS SO GENEROUS ! I would like to thank all of you for your kindness and caring to our residents. I know all of you will be saying that “this is why we are here” however we have SO, SO, so many comments from the residents, families and friends about how helpful and kind all of our volunteers are. This makes a huge difference to the feel of the house and the pressure that the staff feel when they are tending to the medical side of things and don’t have time for that emotional support. THANKS for all you do, your smiling faces make a difference every day. Our Volunteer Teas have become a wonderful monthly gathering. This has been a great opportunity for you to get to know each other, chat about your experiences and just have a few laughs. I am truly impressed to see how much they have grown in size. Keep coming out. What a good time!! We meet at a different café the last week of each month. As it draws closer I will send out the date and where we will be meeting. So come on out meet your fellow volunteers and have a coffee or tea…and some sweets. We have been very fortunate to have the Penticton Gardening Club come forward and offer their skills to beautify our gardens. This is going to be such a wonderful boost to our area out back and the front fountains and gardens. It is going to be a labor of love as they go through the seasons assessing what grows best in certain areas, what needs to be removed and other areas that need to be spruced up. I am very excited to see the transition and maybe my own garden might benefit from watching the experts at work! I can always hope can’t I?? Happy Spring to all of you. Linda Brooks, volunteer coordinator A Page in Memory We are in the process of creating memorial pages on our website for people who were on the palliative program.
