TENTATIVE PROGRAM SCHEDULE Below is the tentative program schedule for the 2013 – 2014 academic years. It includes the event’s description, the number of times this event is to be held this academic year, and current dates (if applicable). The event’s importance to the organization’s mission is as follows: A: Academic P: Professional C: Community S: Social Fall Semester 2013 1. First General Body (GB) meeting: This is the first meeting of every semester and we try to present it on a large scale in order to increase member retention and set the pace for the rest of the semester. It usually costs more because we try to have better quality food and expect the most participants. [1, A P S] September 4th, 2013 2. General Body meetings: This is different from the first general body meeting as it is less upscale. We have various academic and professional activities as well as a forum to discuss the affairs of our organization. Various companies have previously visited and participated, presented about their company and recruited members. This option is always available to our corporate sponsors. [6, A P S]Fall GB Dates: September 18th, October 2nd, October 23rd, November 6th, November 20th, & December 4th 3. Study Nights: We provide NSBE members with supplemental monthly tutoring sessions at the Academic Excellence Center on the Penn state campus. These once a month tutoring sessions will give them more support, along with Penn State’s departmental tutoring hours. We plan to schedule these sessions to take place around midterm examinations in order to maximize attendance. At these sessions we provide members with an adequate place to study, free tutoring, and free pizza. [10, A] Fall Study Night Dates: September 16th, September 23rd, September 30th, October 7th, October 14th, October 21st, October 28th, November 4th, November 11th, November 18th 4. Career Expo: This event will take place around the time of the Penn State Fall Career Fair, which is the week of September 19th (primarily either the Monday of Tuesday). Our anticipated order of events include a mixing and mingling of our general body and companies that attend (light food and refreshments), a brief intro from the attending company representatives, an informal fashion show of business wear (what not to wear and appropriate business code of conduct) for NSBE members, and finally concurrent sessions of resume critiquing and mock interviews. Further contact on the Career Expo will be sent out within the months of July and August.[1, A P]September 17th 5. THON (Canning): The Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, affectionately referred to as THON, is the largest student-run philanthropy in the world! THON is a year- long effort that raises funds and awareness for the fight against pediatric cancer; since its National 6. ar Society of Blackor Engineers whether individually through their organization. Corporate NSBE Partnership is beginning its third year Packet| of being Page 6 involved, and we are hoping to raise more money through one of the most common ways to fundraise, canning. This canister solicitation
founding, $101 million has been raised. Thousands of Penn State students are involved each year whether individually or through their organization. NSBE is beginning its third year of being involved, and we are hoping to raise more money through one of the most common ways to fundraise, canning. This canister solicitation money goes directly towards the Four-Diamonds Fund, so we need to be able to fund gas money, as well as hotels if we are not able to stay with someone we know. This is our way to contribute to the community.[2, C S]Fall Canning Weekends: September 27h –September 29th, October 18th- October 20th 6. A Walk For Education (AWFE): The goal of A Walk for Education (AWFE) is “to increase awareness of the opportunities available through education particularly in the STEM fields and to shatter myths about African-Americans in math, science, engineering and other technologies.” AWFE is a grassroots program in which NSBE members go door to door in underserved Minority communities and hand out information on college, scholarship information, SAT/ACT preparation tools, NSBE and share information on the benefits of majoring in STEM fields. AWFE is the primary outreach and advertising mechanism of NSBE’s community service initiativeTechnical OutReach Community Help (T.O.R.C.H.). Costs for this will be for food and drinks for participating members.TBD 7. Social Events: In the past we have struggled with retention of members, as a result we want to incorporate more social events into our organization that help members to bond and take our organization from being a gathering of individuals towards becoming more of a family. Increasing social events in the past has increased membership and helped create more active members. We plan to have seven or eight social events this year, where students can relax and interact with other Penn state organizations. In the past, we have had joint events with the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), Society of Women in Engineering (SWE), and many more. [8, S] Current Proposals: NSBE Paintball– September 15th NSBE Mafia Night (Team Builder) - September 26th Snow tubing, Movie Nights, Karaoke Night, Mount Tussey Ski/Snowboard trip – TBD 8. Intramural Events: Members of the General Body have suggested the idea of forming sports teams within the organization to play in the Penn State Intramural leagues. As a result, we have decided to pick the top three choices (football, basketball, volleyball, or soccer) amongst the organization and form three teams. [3, S] TBD 9. Fall Regional Conference (FRC): This occurs every fall semester. Chapter members travel to the designated location (this year is in Charlotte, NC) and engage in various academic, professional, social, community service and personal development activities. There is a career fair and various academic, career and leadership workshops. Members learn so much and can bring this knowledge back for use at the Penn state chapter. This year’s designated location is at our very own Penn State, University Park. [1, A P S C] October 5th 11. A Study-a-Thon: This event occurs the weekend before Finals week, every semester. It is just an opportunity for chapter members to study individually or in groups. It starts at 8a.m till midnight, Saturday and Sunday. Three meals are provided each day and there are also computer labs nearby to aid students in studying. It is probably our biggest event that attracts Members and non-members Alike. [1, A] Fall Study-a-Thon:December 14h – 15th 12. Guaranteed 4.0: This is Brand New, Innovative program that we are extremely excited about implementing for the first time this year. Sponsors of this event have the benefit of having their name and logo on each individual ticket that is sold to students in the Penn state community.[1, P S] April 18th ***Our organization takes part in on campus community service activities like the “Penn State MLK Day of Service” as well as holding our own community service events. Some ideas for this year are clothing & food drives, volunteering at soup kitchens, planting flowers and trees, and working with Non-Profit Orgs in the State College, PA area. Costs for these events will be taken care of by the organization itself. *** MISCELLANEOUS PROGRAMS This section consists of a description of various items that have monetary cost that are not necessarily related to any event. 1. Company Luncheons: This event will happen four times throughout the year. It is a meet and greet for our top sponsors (from the past school year) and active members of our chapter. This is a great networking event for both companies and students to get to know each other and interact. Correspondence will be sent out from the Corporate Liaison during the fall semester. National Society of Black Engineers Corporate Partnership Packet| Page 9
2. Multicultural Engineering Program (MEP) Endowment: This is an endowment of $2500 that would be given to the Multicultural Engineering Program at Penn State. This program is crucial in recruiting and providing financial support for minority students, without which, many of the current chapter members would not be at The Pennsylvania State University. The school is cutting funding to this program as a result of various Government regulations. The program now has to solicit for most of its funding. This is our chapter’s way of contributing to a program that helped us get to where we are today, and we hope it will help numerous other students in the future. 3. NSBE Apparel: These are various articles of clothing that members wear at several chapter events and to our Regional & National Conventions. They include NSBE Executive Board Polo shirts and Sweatshirts for our General Body. 4. NSBE THON Apparel: This year we will have our first set of dancers for the THON non- stop dance marathon at Penn State, therefore we want to have shirts that we can wear on our canning trips and at the marathon to signify our dedication to raising money to help fight Pediatric Cancer. 5. PCI Apparel: This year our NSBE Jr. Chapter has requested to have shirts of their own, to wear on significant days at their school and to the Regional & National Conferences, to depict their dedication to NSBE. 6. THON Weekend: Since we know that we will have two dancers, it is important that we do everything we can to support them and show some morale. This means small snacks and gifts for our dancers and small snacks for the individuals who are on our floor pass assisting our dancers and checking in on them as they dance non-stop for almost 46 hours. Dear Corporate Sponsor, After reading the corporate packet, I hope that you have a better understanding of how our chapter functions and the events that are important to our members. We are an organization that strives to live by the NSBE mission. The mission is “To increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community”. We offer many programs from academic, social and professional to develop our members into the best people that they can become. Our chapter is asking for your financial support of our endeavors so that we can achieve the mission to the best of our abilities. We hope to create a strong and lasting relationship with your company throughout this school year and into the future. This relationship will allow your company access some of the brightest and most promising engineers and scientists that Penn State University Park has to offer. Any contributions that you can provide to our organization would be well appreciated and beneficial to our goal. As the treasurer of this organization, I work with the Penn State Multicultural Engineering Program, the corporate liaison and the rest of the executive board to help our members get the best NSBE experience possible. I know that with your help, we can provide that to our members. If you have any questions or concerns about the packet, our activities or more ways to get involved, you can contact Serge Gaba, our corporate liaison. The programs that this organization provides for its members allow them to learn life lessons. Last year, I had the honor of attending my first National NSBE conference in Indianapolis, Indiana. While there, I attended several workshops. One of the workshops that really had an impact on me was “Diversity and Inclusion”. In the workshop, the speaker Latasha Gilesbi, talked about why it is important for companies to fund and encourage diversity. “The business need for diversity stems from two things: the global society is changing its laws to create more diversity within its workplaces and this diversity allowing for some of the highest performing teams that the world has seen.” By funding our chapter, you are helping to develop the next generation of STEM field graduates and showing them that diversity is important to your company. Sincerely, Taylor Lacey 2013-2014 Treasurer Penn State Chapter - National Society of Black Engineers National Society of Black Engineers Corporate Partnership Packet| Page 12
