A Message from the Principal Dear Students, Alumni, Parents, Grandparents, and Friends, It has been a distinct pleasure and joy to serve as Principal of Saint Anthony’s High School. After 16 years of service in the position of Principal, and now at the age of sixty-four, the time has come for me to refocus my life and move towards what God has planned for me next. I will carry the relationships and friendships I have made with students, their families, the alumni, faculty and staff with me forever. I am so grateful to Brother David Migliorino, O.S.F. who has been appointed to be your next Principal of this extraordinary school. He will bring dynamic energy, professional experience and true Franciscan joy. Please know that I am confident he will ensure that Saint Anthony’s High School will continue to flourish and grow well into the future. It was Mother Teresa who said: “Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin.” God bless you all, Brother Gary Cregan, O.S.F.

A Message from the A Message Director of from the Development Alumni Director Dear FRIAR NATION, Dear Friars, I hope that you all enjoy this issue of Friar Focus. The Hoping the summer was restful and you had good times with family Development Office and Alumni Office take great pride in and friends. As we were preparing this edition of Friar Focus, the theme producing this magazine for your reading pleasure. It’s our of role models was definitely in the forefront. Our cover story focuses sincerest hope that its content will boost your pride and on student athletes who have a positive influence on younger students. It was very touching to see these two groups interact. satisfaction in our school. Moreover, I hope that it sends a clear message that Saint Anthony’s High School is a vibrant, I could not help but think of the many role models we have here at multidimensional learning environment that continues to Saint Anthony’s. Some are Franciscan Brothers who devote their lives offer its students the educational experience of a lifetime. to serving our community and teaching our young. Some are our Faculty and Staff who also dedicate themselves to the Franciscan values we hold Over the last couple of years, we have made a conscious dear. Many are our students and alumni who constantly remind us to effort to provide you with specific information and examples strive to be the best version of ourselves. of unique and unprecedented programs and collaborations I feel very privileged to encounter some of these incredible people that reinforce that Saint Anthony’s offers unparalleled in my role as Alumni Director. There are role models for every student opportunities for our students to grow spiritually, who passes through Saint Anthony’s. Father Greg Rannazzisi ’01, academically, artistically and athletically. Brother Mark Waldmann ’96, Brother Brian Sullivan ‘93 and Sister Mary Gabriel Devlin ’92 are a few of our incredible examples of those In closing, I hope that you will be able to join us at the 2019 who have heeded the call to religious life. Mr. Patrick Maguire ‘92, Black & Gold Gala on Saturday, October 19th as we honor Mrs. Liz (Darcy)Welling ’92 and Mr. Ryan Nimmo ’09 are just a few of our beloved and esteemed Coach Richie Reichert ‘70 and the many role models here who are devoted parents and spouses living Family. The Gala promises to be Saint Anthony’s at its best the married life. There are those whose vocation seems to be teaching as we honor Coach Reichert for his distinguished career at the young and serving as role models in athletics and clubs such as the helm of the Saint Anthony’s Football Program. Mr. Charles Menzer ’00, Mr. Paul Washington ’99 and Ms. Mary Kellaigh Malangone ’99. These are but a few examples, but there Friars Forever, are so many role models among our Alumni that it would take pages to name them. It is one of our true blessings here at Saint Anthony’s. Our own students can often serve as role models to their classmates and the adults in the building. Throughout the year, I was most moved by the young men who participated in Track and Cross Country. These Don A. Corrao young people set incredible records and even won the Penn Relays for the first time in over four decades. What impressed me about them, however, was not their athletic prowess but rather their compassion and kindness in the face of adversity. When their beloved moderator Brother Antonio was ill, they were there for him, in the hospital and at school, and cheered him on to wellness. When their coach, Bob Higgins ’79, became ill, they were not only present for him, but they were present for each other and for their other coaches. When Coach Higgins passed away the team devoted their season to his memory and pushed each other to greatness in his name. These young people consistently displayed values that we can all aspire to. The Friars I encounter on a regular basis remind me of who I want to be and how I can get there. Our students are very blessed to have such incredible role models in their lives on a daily basis. It is one of the many benefits of being Classmates for 4 years and Friars Forever! Enjoy the magazine and always stay in touch! Friars Forever, Denise Creighton FRIAR FOCUS 3

Girl Scout Gold Award Congratulations to Meghan Brady- Fuchsman ‘20, Alisa Azzarelli ‘19 and Caitlin Beirne ‘20 on recently earning their Girl Scout Gold Award, Girl Scout’s highest honor! One of the many requirements to earning this award is the successful completion of a sustainable project that meets an expressed need in the community. Meghan implemented a tutoring and mentoring program for native Spanish-speaking elementary students in the South Huntington School District. Alisa worked with local government and successfully lobbied for a new bill in Suffolk County that declared April 7th as Mercury Poisoning Awareness Day. Caitlin’s project “Zika Virus & Disease Prevention Through the Usage of Bat Houses and Education” entailed designing, building and installing four double-chambered bat houses in Suffolk County parks as well as educating the community in an effort to eliminate disease carrying mosquitoes. Sincere congratulations to these Friars on a job well done! 14 FRIAR FOCUS 09 | 2019
Mark Sherrill ’19, a member of Boy Scout Troop 194 Babylon, recently passed his Board of Review and became on Eagle Scout on March 3rd, 2019. Eagle Scout is the highest achievement or rank attainable in the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). Since its inception in 1911, only four percent of Scouts have earned this rank after a lengthy review process. An Eagle Scout is a very prestigious achievement. For his Eagle Scout project, Mark drew, designed, planned and coordinated the construction of a bench around a tree and an Exchange Library using the concept “Read a book, Leave a book” on the property of the West Islip Church of Christ on Montauk Highway in West Islip. He completed his project on September 15th, 2018. We are all very proud of Mark! Go Friar! Eagle Scouts John Judge ‘20, a member of Boy Scout Troop 6, constructed his Eagle Scout project at his home parish of St. Patrick’s in Southold. His project consisted of refurbishing and adding to the existing prayer garden to make it more inviting to parishioners. He constructed and installed two resin benches, removed all dead brush and replaced them with drought resistant plants throughout the garden. He also power washed the existing walkway and built and installed a trellis. John developed and organized all aspects of the project, but states that he could not have completed it without the help of his fellow scouts, mentors and, most importantly, his family. He became an Eagle Scout this past May.

Golden Kids Carnival On Sunday May 19, 2019, 225 children with special needs along with over 500 of their family members attended the 9th Annual Friars Golden Kids Carnival at Saint Anthony’s High School. Over 250 current Saint Anthony’s students served as “Buddies” and activity leaders for these children. Faculty and Staff members, as well as the Mothers’ and Fathers’ Guilds, helped to organize and run the event, which took place in and around the Student Center. The children enjoyed jumping in the bounce house, going down the inflatable slide, and running through the obstacle course. They also loved dancing to the music, playing a variety of sports, blowing bubbles, joining in carnival games, coloring, and having their faces painted. This year’s Carnival again included therapy dogs, which the children loved. Lunch was also served to all in our Cafeteria. It was a beautiful day for everyone involved and we look forward to the 2020 Carnival!

“Pre” Saint Anthony’s High School continues to lead in its efforts to provide its students with Pre-Med as many unprecedented, unique, meaningful, motivational and educational opportunities as possible in STEM related fields! Students On Friday, May 24, 2019 a small group of from Saint students visited the Cadaver Laboratory at New York Medical College in Valhalla, New York. When they arrived they were greeted Anthony’s by Dr. Matthew Prevetz. High School Dr. Prevetz, also a Roman Catholic Priest, is a Professor of Cellular Biology, Human Anatomy and Clinical Health Science at visit the New York Medical College. He is also the college’s Dean for Pre-Clerkship Education, Human the Director of Medical Gross Anatomy, Post-Graduate Clinical Anatomy and directs Cadaver the college’s Cadaver Bequeathal Program. Soon after arriving, the students were Lab at escorted to the Anatomy Conference Room where Fr. Matt briefed the students New York on the goals and learning expectations for the day. He also covered Laboratory Rules, Regulations, Safety and clean up Medical procedures and highlighted the importance of maintaining dignity, respect and College appreciation for the cadavers at all times. Once in the Anatomy Lab the students “scrubbed-in”. While wearing surgical scrubs and gloves the cadaver dissection experience began… At two separate dissection stations, Dr. Prevetz and his assistant, Dr. Roger Bender spent over 2 hours performing and explaining, in detail, each step and procedure of the dissection. At the direction and oversight of the professors, the students were invited to actually do parts of the dissection as well. After “scrubbing-out” the students went back to the Anatomy conference room where Dr. Prevetz debriefed the students and opened the floor to a question and answer period. Lunch followed and after a few pictures on the campus, we board our bus for a trip back to Saint Anthony’s. An Awesome Day! (Also attending and chaperoning the trip to NY Medical College were Bro. Joshua Di Mauro, Asst. Principal, Mrs. Karen Scharbach, Chairwoman, Dept. of Mathematics, Mr. James Medina, Chairman, Dept. of Science and Dr. Mark Capodanno, Teacher, Honors Anatomy and Physiology.) It’s a Great Day for the Irish! The months of February and March are jam packed with events for our Celtic Friar Pipe Band and our Saint Anthony’s Step Dancers. On February 2nd, the Evening of Celtic Music was held in our Auditorium. The lineup included the Celtic Friar Pipe Band, the Iona College Pipe Band, the Saint Anthony’s Step Dancing Team, the singing duo of Noel and Nancy and a special appearance by Mrs. Ann Saxer and her son Robert. A grand time was had by all. The Celtic Friars Pipe Band marched in parades all over Long Island every weekend in March, but the highlight of their season was the NYC Saint Patrick’s Day Parade as they marched up Fifth Avenue. Friar Pride was on full display and the Celtic Friars made us all very proud!
Eucharistic Ministers In the spring of their junior year our students are invited by the Campus Ministry Office and their Theology teachers to become special ministers of the Eucharist at our Masses during their senior year. Students are expected to have a deep belief in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist and to attend Mass on Sundays. This year forty-two young men and women applied for and were accepted into this program and attended a special workshop sponsored by the diocese for the future Eucharistic Ministers in each of the Catholic high schools on Long Island. Needless to say, their public witness to their Catholic faith is a blessing for our entire school community. FRIAR FOCUS 29
