Letter from Lori Dear Friends, In March, the Kentucky Humane Society team gathered at the University of Louisville Rauch Planetarium to celebrate the lifesaving achievements of our staff. Every day, our compassionate team saves and improves lives. From our kennel attendants who provide daily care for the animals to our adoption counselors, from our Pet Resorts staff to our veterinary teams, from our fundraising folks to our Pet Help Line staff: everyone at KHS is dedicated to helping animals and the people who love them. At this celebration, we unveiled our new core values, which I want to share with you. Core values are the fundamental beliefs that our staff live by every day. These guiding principles highlight what the Kentucky Humane Society stands for. Free the Shelter Found Homes for 96 Pets We'd like to thank PRAI Beauty for sponsoring our Free the Shelters Adoption Special March 9-11. Because of them, and all those out there willing to adopt, we found homes for 37 cats and 59 dogs in one weekend. Throughout the weekend, adoption counselors met with potential adopters, going over the responsibilities of pet ownership and ensuring our pets went to loving homes. We appreciate the support of PRAI Beauty. They helped make a lot of animals’ and families’ dreams come true. U Happy adopters found the perfect pet at our Free the Shelter event. Our thanks to PRAI Beauty for making these pets’ dreams come true. Fern Creek Pet Resort is an ASPCA ‘Way Station’ If your dog or cat is a client of the Kentucky Humane Society’s Fern Creek Pet Resort, chances are you’ve seen a big white and orange transport vehicle emblazoned with the ASPCA logo in the driveway. In March 2017, Fern Creek Pet Resort became an overnight way station for the ASPCA’s WaterShed Animal Fund Rescue Ride. Each week, up to 80 lucky shelter dogs spend a night in a separate building at the Pet Resort before continuing their journey to shelters where excited families are waiting to adopt them. These dogs are transported by the ASPCA from overcrowded animal shelters in Mississippi, Alabama and surrounding states to shelters in Wisconsin and beyond. “Our staff is thrilled to be a part of saving lives,” says Cheyenne Utley, Fern Creek Pet Resort Manager. “Not only do the revenues from boarding, grooming and day care from our clients help shelter animals at KHS, but we are also caring for shelter dogs who – without this program – may never have been given a second chance.” U Fern Creek Pet Resort Manager Cheyenne Utley helps with a dog preparing to rest at the way station. 4 www.kyhumane.org 4 www.kyhumane.org

The event raised almost $37,000 for the Kentucky Humane Society! We want to say a big thank you and congratulations to all the students who raised money for us. Over 500 students participated in the event, and many received a puppy pizza party to thank them for their great work raising support for our animals. We also want to thank Grandmaster Hwang and his family for their support of KHS and the Louisville community. Ever Evolving Grants KHS Gets New Transport Van The Kentucky Colonels, a voluntary philanthropic organization, and Mister "P" Express Inc., a truckload contract carrier, provided funds for a new transport van! Seven days a week, our drivers deliver animals from the Sam Swope Pet Treatment & Lifesaving Center on Steedly Drive to 10 adoption centers throughout Louisville. We couldn’t do this without a reliable transport vehicle. Thanks, Kentucky Colonels and Mister “P” Express! PEDIGREE Foundation Supports Shelter Dogs Kentucky Humane Society received a $10,000 grant from PEDIGREE Foundation to expand our Saving Kentucky’s Shelter Dogs project. The funds will help KHS increase the number of at-risk dogs transferred to KHS from municipal shelters, place them for adoption and empower shelter partners to increase the number of dogs they save in their communities through behavioral and other KHS training support. “We are thrilled to partner with PEDIGREE Foundation again,” says Kristin Seaman, KHS Transport Manager. “This program will help us save the lives of hundreds of shelter dogs.” PetSmart Charities Funds Spay/Neuter & Pet Retention Did you know that PetSmart Charities Inc. is one of our top supporters? Since 2005, they have given over $422,000 to support our lifesaving work. This year, PetSmart Charites gave funds to spay or neuter 700 pit bull type dogs at no cost to their owners. And they recently gave a grant for our Pet Help Line and Pet Retention Programs, which help owners keep their pets out of shelters. The next time you shop at PetSmart, please say “thank you” to the staff on behalf of KHS. Each year, millions of generous PetSmart shoppers help pets in need by donating to PetSmart Charities using the pin pads at checkout registers inside PetSmart stores. Learn more about PetSmart Charities at petsmartcharities.org. Dogs Trust Worldwide Helps Owned Dogs In December, the Kentucky Humane Society became the second organization in the United States to receive a grant from Dogs Trust Worldwide, sister charity to Dogs Trust – the United Kingdom’s leading dog welfare charity. They are supporting our Pet Retention Programs, covering three areas: temporary foster care costs for dogs owned by domestic abuse survivors and low-income owners seeking secure housing, the running of our Pet Help Line which assists over 2,400 dog owners a year, and financial assistance vouchers for low-income pet owners’ veterinary bills. We are honored to have our life-changing work recognized by an international organization. Schweitzer Fund Supports Orphaned Foals We are grateful that the Albert Schweitzer Animal Welfare Fund is supporting our orphaned foal program this spring. Without a mother, these babies are very fragile and expensive to raise. A grant from this Fund is helping pay for medical treatment, milk and daily care. In honor of the Fund’s support, our first foal of the season, Allie, was named for Albert Schweitzer. The Fund was established in 1981 and named for the famed scientist and humanitarian in recognition of his philosophy of Reverence for Life. U Paw Street Journal 7
