A Welcome Note… Kilkenny and Carlow ETB programmes provide access to part time QQI accredited educational opportunities for young people and adults in various centres throughout Carlow town and County. Staff at BTEI Carlow strive to create a relaxed, inclusive, supportive and adult- friendly learning environment. We encourage learners of all ages to develop their full potential. We hope your return to learning experience is a positive one, and if you have any queries or require further information on any other BTEI courses, please contact the BTEI Centre. GENERAL INFORMATION The Back to Education Initiative aims to increase the participation of young people and adults with less than upper second level education in a range of flexible learning opportunities. We provide tuition that prepares participants for re-entry into the workplace with updated skills and knowledge and a recognised qualification. Our overall aim is to give all learners the opportunity to combine a return to part-time learning with family, work and other responsibilities. Subject to demand, the BTEI offers part-time courses in community settings throughout Carlow Town and County. Please contact the office if you would like us to offer a course in your local community and/or if you would like to sign up for an existing course. 1
Course Eligibility: Priority will be given to learners with: l Either less than upper second level education (Less than 5 D’s in Leaving Certificate) l Those who are in receipt of Job Seekers payments or means tested social welfare benefits. l Holders of medical cards and their dependents. Course Cost: All tuition is free to those who fall into the above eligibility categories Course Certification: Kilkenny and Carlow ETB, BTEI courses run in Carlow Town and County offering access to certification at QQI Levels 3, 4, 5 through the National Framework of Qualifications. Flexible approaches will allow you to build up credits over time and achieve recognised qualifications. Garda Vetting: Garda Vetting is a requirement on courses where learners have access to children or vulnerable adults. Prior to attending work experience learners must be vetted by the Gardai. Learners will be given Garda Vetting forms by the BTEI Co-ordinator. Course Locations: Carlow, Ballon, Tullow, Bagenalstown, & other venues. Adult Education Guidance Information Service (AEGIS) The Adult Education Guidance Service is available to all BTEI learners. The role of the AEGIS is to assist learners in making career choices, applying for college through CAO and preparation for future employment opportunities. Information & Communications Technology Skills QQI Level 4 QQI Level 4 in Information and Communications Technology Skills 4M0855 Location: Carlow / Bagenalstown A one year part-time programme aimed at enabling learners to develop the knowledge, skill and competence in a broad range of information and communication technology which may enable employment in a variety of information and communications technology sectors, or progression to further education or training. Horticulture QQI Level 4 QQI Level 4 Major Award in Horticulture 4M1994 Location: Ballon A two year part-time programme designed to enable the learner to work as a general operative in horticulture, using knowledge, skill and competence to select, establish, grow and maintain a range of plants under supervision. The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge and skill to participate effectively and safely in a retail environment while engaged in teamwork and cooperation with others. The purpose of the award is to enable the Learner to carry out horticulture operations independently under direction in a range of fields. Early Childhood Care and Education QQI Level 5 QQI Level 5 Early Childhood Care and Education - 5M2009 Location: Carlow The purpose of this two year part-time programme is to provide the learner with the opportunity to develop the relevant knowledge, skill and competence in childcare which enable employment under direct supervision in childcare or progression to further education and training. Computers Beginners Computers Computer Literacy – QQI Level 3 3N0881 This programme module aims to inform the Learner about computers so that the Learner has confidence in being able to access and operate a computer for their own needs Internet Skills – QQI Level 3 3N0931 This programme module aims to provide the Learner with the tools necessary to use some of the facilities and functions available in a word processing application to generate documents of interest to the Learner Word Processing – QQI Level 3 3N0588 This programme module aims to provide the Learner with the tools necessary to use some of the facilities and functions available in a word processing application to generate documents of interest to the Learner Please note this programme is subject to change and validation 12
Computers Intermediate Computers Information Technology – QQI Level 4 4N1125 The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to use applications in information technology. It is designed to develop skills in data entry, word processing, and using the internet. Computer Applications – QQI Level 4 4N1112 The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to use common generic computer applications. It is designed to develop skills in database, spreadsheets and computer graphics. Web Design – QQI Level 4 4N1122 The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to design and construct a basic website. Desktop Publishing – QQI Level 4 4N1854 This programme module aims to expand on the Learners’ basic desktop publishing skills to enable them to successfully navigate a desktop publishing programme to create a variety of publications. It also encourages the learner to develop their understanding and use of the tools and options available within the desktop publishing application. Word Processing – Level 4 4N1123 This programme module aims to equip the learner with the knowledge, skills and competence to use word processing applications to supervised employment standard 13
Computers Advanced Computers Word Processing QQI Level 5 5N1358 This module is designed to enable learners to develop their word processing skills, understanding and application of word processing software and file management techniques. Text Production QQI Level 5 5N1422 This module has been developed to enable learners to produce an extensive range of documents using keyboard. The focus of the module is on the skills and knowledge to producce documents to mailing standards. 14
